Feeling better about the impending 5K now. Did a short run last night, my first in almost three weeks, to test out whether my knee would start hurting again. Although it felt a little sensitive, it didn't hurt while I was running, and then I preemptively iced it when I got home. Today it's slightly tender but doesn't hurt anywhere as bad as it did a week or so ago. I think I need to work to not push myself as hard, take slightly longer breaks between runs, and make myself do the exercises that are supposed to help with runner's knee.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 6 May 2010 15:57 (sixteen years ago)

Great! That's probably a good approach.

i'm assuming they both translate to 'runs really fucking fast' in some common language.

2:15. i been tryin to convince my self that that isn't mins/secs

Black IP's (darraghmac), Saturday, 8 May 2010 19:13 (sixteen years ago)

choge = runs really fast for a really long time?

tehresa, Saturday, 8 May 2010 19:15 (sixteen years ago)

Kipchoge, is a Nandi language expression for "born near the grain storage shed" [5]. :(

Major knee pains after my run yesterday. Ugh.

Jeff, Saturday, 8 May 2010 22:18 (sixteen years ago)

I got some crazy weird upper glute pain on one side while running today -- what could that possibly be about?

tehresa, Sunday, 9 May 2010 00:38 (sixteen years ago)

as of ten minutes ago am now running 13.5k non-stop, albeit at a laboured 10 mins/km. still, if the half marathon gets finished at that pace i won't be gutted or anything.

Black IP's (darraghmac), Sunday, 9 May 2010 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

Going to try to get going on this again after my premature 10K, this time working up in a sensible way. Thinking of alternating between 2.5 and 5 runs, about 4 runs per week, trying to very slowly get faster at both, and incorporating intervals once I've settled into the running habit. Sound like a plan?

ljubljana, Sunday, 9 May 2010 23:55 (sixteen years ago)

^ kinda what i did, but for one of those runs over a couple of weeks i stepped up distance little by little.

still not bothered about speed overmuch, as long as i'm making progress over distance.

knees are killing me today, to the extent where stairs are a problem, beginning to worry that all this road running might not be too good of an idea.

Black IP's (darraghmac), Monday, 10 May 2010 10:55 (sixteen years ago)

ran my first 5k under 27 minutes –- six weeks into my training. not fast objectively, but fast for me. perpetual right knee pain, even with lots of stretching. but the pain seems to abate when i go to the gym and lift weights and stretch (w/o running).

ampersand (remy bean), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:10 (sixteen years ago)

hey, that's fast, considering!
i still don't really have any idea how fast/slow i am or how far 5k is within my usual route
have been steady running 3-5x a week tho and feeling excellent

^ this is a good attitude, and one i will happily subscribe to once i've completed the measured event in june

Black IP's (darraghmac), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:26 (sixteen years ago)

ran my first 5k under 27 minutes –- six weeks into my training.

Hey, I ran a 3 miler in 25 minutes last night (translates to a 5k in ~26 minutes, given the extra 0.1 mile) and I've been "training" for years. That's quite respectable!

I should mention that b/c of asthma & previous leg conditions I run exclusively inside on a treadmill. For the time being.

getting worried about this endless perpetuation of usian stereotypes

Black IP's (darraghmac), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:39 (sixteen years ago)

i will smash them by saying JOKES BRUV

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:39 (sixteen years ago)

see that's unacceptable stereotyping of a lesser race, something that we should all be deeply uncomfortable with

Black IP's (darraghmac), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:40 (sixteen years ago)

anyways it's joeks

Black IP's (darraghmac), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:40 (sixteen years ago)

i will admit that i don't know what i'm doing

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

it's a minefield, and we don't want one of those on the running thread of all places

Black IP's (darraghmac), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:45 (sixteen years ago)

oh seriously? i had no idea. please excuse me.

we had a good run

Black IP's (darraghmac), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:53 (sixteen years ago)

god is it that bad?

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:53 (sixteen years ago)

well we might avoid the worst of it because all uk ilxors are disgusting savages to whom the very idea of physical exercise is anaethema, but in the future it may be best to avoid gross generalisation of other cultures imo.

Black IP's (darraghmac), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:56 (sixteen years ago)

I've contracted some sort of evil throat disease now. So frustrating. Hope to return to the pavement tomorrow. I've got a 10 mile race in 2.5 weeks.

Jeff, Monday, 10 May 2010 13:58 (sixteen years ago)

Last I checked you don't "run" with your throat iirc.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:59 (sixteen years ago)

goddamn.

running 'hardman' thread 2010!

Black IP's (darraghmac), Monday, 10 May 2010 14:00 (sixteen years ago)

well, at least if i have been truly offensive, i may have fully arrived on the ILX consciousness; that alone is something to celebrate.

let's celebrate this moment with a brisk jog.

Jeff i am sorry to hear about this throat disease. i had one of those once (maybe strep?) and i went to a weird ancient Colombian doctor who wrote my vitals on a post-it note. he gave me antibiotics.

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Monday, 10 May 2010 14:01 (sixteen years ago)

OH, I'll run, but I'm traveling all day today, so I won't have time. Tomorrow I'm running, throat or no throat.

Jeff, Monday, 10 May 2010 14:06 (sixteen years ago)

I suggest traveling by foot to wherever you are going. No matter the distance.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 10 May 2010 14:09 (sixteen years ago)

i have decided that im not gonna go running today and i am COOL WITH THAT

i took a few days off myself but tonight it's on

Guys, I'll be running the San Francisco Marathon in July on my honeymoon -- my fiance's first marathon. I'm thinking about making it a charity run, something for a great cause (v. likely a "motivate kids to run!" charity)... but wouldn't want to be the guy with a $250 target who only raises $30 or something. Could also serve as a "trial" charity run for a 50-mile charity run in honor of Bimble (as discussed upthread) -- for a mental health charity, suicide prevention charity, or something similar.

Would anyone here be interested in donating, say, $10 or so? Either for a July marathon charity... or for a ridiculously long, exhausting, 50-mile charity run (a bit later this year)?

you'd be surprised how easy it is to raise $ for a good cause! i've raised $270 for my next charity run basically w/out even trying.

i would be down to donate as a wedding/running charity gift to you and your new wife!

I think I have Iliotibial Band Syndrome.

Jeff, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:23 (sixteen years ago)

Two words: foam rolling.

Count me in xpost

ljubljana, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 12:01 (sixteen years ago)

jeff -- what's that? is it in your throat?

also i will donate $10 for mental health charity for sure

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 12:14 (sixteen years ago)

I actually just got a foam roller. Tried it out a little on the ITB and it hurt like hell, so I think it's working. My problem is finding time to add yet another task to my daily routine.

Jeff, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 12:27 (sixteen years ago)

I also have a "The Stick" now.

Jeff, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 12:32 (sixteen years ago)

I've got a the Soldier Field 10 mile race coming up in 2 weeks and I am woefully unprepared. I haven't ran since I was last having my ITB/Knee issues. Should I try and knock out at least one 10 mile run before the race?
