He should have said, "Sir, at this point there is NO way for me to tell if you are eligible to vote in this precinct."
His breath smelled like he had been drinking coffee brewed with cigarette butts and durian.

i plan to stay at home unless somebody with cable invites us over to watch the daily show/colbert report and cable coverage ... i've got a lot of school stuff to do this week and can't really afford to be exhausted and hung over tomorrow

So my boss tells me that the NYT said that it's possible that the outcome could be clear by 9 p.m. EST, which makes sense, as I think the latest that the polls are open in the east is 8:30 for N.C.

A Loop business assoc. urged Loop businesses to let their people go at 3 p.m.
The newspaper shows the line that is forming for the rally. Gates don't even open till 8:30!
― another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 19:16 (fifteen years ago) link
what is going to happen at the rally if the results are close and/or mccain refuses to concede until all the votes are completely counted? are people going to hang out all night doing nothing?

ILLVILLE!wish I could go to the rally, but I don't know how bad the congestion is going to be (besides the fact I don't have a ticket).probably better off watching it at home.

I can't find it now, but I read somewhere that the organizers got a license for amplified sound until 1 a.m.

i mean, isn't there a pretty good chance that this might not be all figured out until late? i know a lot of the swing states are in the east but if it's even remotely close, won't mccain want to wait and see what the complete totals are?
― metametadata (n/a), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:07 (fifteen years ago) link
There's a good chance that the networks will call the race at 7 p.m.

i know a lot of places are saying it might be callable early but it also seems possible that it might take until the wee hours of the morning
― metametadata (n/a), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:35 (fifteen years ago) link
no one knows
from what I've read, if you see PA, NC, VA, FL etc going Obama, they're going to be calling it early
― good luck usa (dan m), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:36 (fifteen years ago) link
Because http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/04/us/politics/04network.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss]says that "senior vice president of CBS News, Paul Friedman, said the prospects for Barack Obama or John McCain meeting the minimum threshold of electoral votes could be clear as soon as 8 p.m. — before polls in even New York and Rhode Island close, let alone those in Texas and California. At such a moment, determined from a combination of polling data and samples of actual votes, the network could share its preliminary projection with viewers, Mr. Friedman said."
― Eazy, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:38 (fifteen years ago) link
Thanks. That's what I've been reading too, but some folks I talk to dismiss the idea of calling the election at 8 p.m. - regardless of the results - out of hand.
― another regrettable cheesesteak (Jesse), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:39 (fifteen years ago) link
the idea is completely dismissible, that does not mean they won't be doing it anyway

i also want the desire to troll these people to go away, but so far i am keeping it barely under the surface
I learned last night that there's a law in Canada that forbids the media from talking about election results at all until all off the polls have closed nationwide. In last month's election, this meant that bloggers were all on top of the story for hours before the media could legally announce anything.
― Eazy, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:46 (fifteen years ago) link
sorry to keep harping on this, but even if networks call the election for obama by 8 or whenever, it seems like it won't matter because obama will be hesitant to claim victory until a) mccain concedes or b) all the votes are actually tallied. so really it comes down to when mccain concedes, not when networks call it.
― metametadata (n/a), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link
i learned today (on 538 i think) that france has a ban on polls 48 hours before, and maybe after, a major election? seems like a good idea
just says in France, it is illegal to conduct a poll of any kind within 48 hours of the election, which is somewhat unclear
― metametadata (n/a), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 20:49 (fifteen years ago) link
1.9% is as close to certain as a mathematical model gets.

Obama should just start a five-hour victory speech at 7 p.m. (I know, I know, park's not open). Do it William Jennings Bryan/Castro style.

WHOA. That's fucked up!
Jenny had some interesting stories of shenanigans in Indiana - like the Republican poll-watcher who was asking people who they were voting for, and asking to see their licenses in an effort to disqualify them based on their addresses.
