I will be holding a "changing your tire" clinic this Saturday, using John's car as my guinea pig.

I've heard the spray can makes your tire/car dangerous to work on, to the point that some mechanics will refuse your business if fix-a-flat has been used on a tire.

I've had a can of the spray, but I've only ever used the thing with the strands. Which, by the way, is exactly what they use at most tire repair places for minor punctures.

Also handy, I used to keep an electric air compressor in my car--it hooks up to the cig. lighter.

Jesse, you're more a manly Mitch than a sassy Susan.

Renee as cover is a good plan. Don't you think mechanics run into this a lot - women bringing their man's car into the shop?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 4 May 2006 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Oops, I meant to post that on the WDYLL thread.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 4 May 2006 13:58 (twenty years ago)

GUYS I WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK, SORRY I WASN'T AROUND TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS IN A TIMELY MANNER.

First off, I have no spare in the trunk.

John, what make/model/year of car is it?

2000 Mercury Sable

With any luck you keep the manual in the glovebox anyway, right? Right?

Yes, but it was torn to shreds when the car was stolen last fall.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:06 (twenty years ago)

The funny thing is, I can't even picture Jesse driving.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:10 (twenty years ago)

For future reference: www.faqfarm.com/Q/FAQ/646

If you don't have a manual, call yr nearest Mercury dealership and ask them to answer your Q about jack placement.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:11 (twenty years ago)

i think you all should take jesse seriously on his 'clinic' & learn this stuff. my dad made me do it when i was 16 & i've been very grateful for it.

p.s. i'm leaving for china in t-minus 18 days. if anyone wants anything, put yer orders in now!

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:14 (twenty years ago)

I really just wanted someone to tell me if I could get my tire fixed at a regular auto mechanic. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:17 (twenty years ago)

THE ANSWER IS YES.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:20 (twenty years ago)

China!

Bring back food, pls.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:21 (twenty years ago)

J, do you know anyone else with the same car? Or a Taurus? There are millions of those things around. See if you can borrow a spare to limp down to the garage on. Once you're there it'll be like 5 bucks to get the thing fixed.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, the fiction review archives at Bookslut seem to be in a completely random order. I WONDER WHO COULD BE RESPONSIBLE?!?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Spending $ > sweat and hassle

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:32 (twenty years ago)

That's cool. Jus' sayin'.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

JMZ, I likes you an' all but...wow. For your sake I hope the apocalypse never comes.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone here love the Beach Boys? I don't! But, I have a favor to ask if you do... Email me: the dan martin atsymbol gmail dot com. Just take out teh spaces.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:39 (twenty years ago)

I love the Beach Boys! Okay.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:39 (twenty years ago)

I had a flirtation once with someone who said at one point, "why do anything you can pay someone to do FOR you?". I think I just said I had to go, and that was that. Mwahahahahah.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha. That's like how one of my bosses gives his assistant pocket change and asks her to go next door and buy him some soup with it. And then she buzzes me and asks me to come get the money from her and go buy him some soup.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:47 (twenty years ago)

It's like a fucking Rube Goldberg contraption -- HOW MANY PEOPLE'S TIME CAN WE WASTE?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, I read that as "soap" at first. You should totally bring back soap sometime and blame it on miscommunications in the passing-of-the-buck.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Last night my coworkers were shocked and apalled when I said I was walking to the el to go home. They couldn't understand why I wouldn't just take a taxi. Plus, the el is DANGEROUS after 7pm (!).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Also, people get sick who ride public transportation!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Are taxis germ free, I ask you?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:51 (twenty years ago)

Last night my coworkers were shocked and apalled when I said I was walking to the el to go home. They couldn't understand why I wouldn't just take a taxi. Plus, the el is DANGEROUS after 7pm (!).

The world is full of ppl like this....which is why most of the world is totally stupid.

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

everyone knows that taxi drivers in chicago spend upwards of 20 minutes after each fare in disinfecting and sterilizing their cab.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

that's why they drive so crazily, they have to hustle on each ride because they know the next 20 minutes they won't be making money. it's documented.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

So, that's what the smell in that cab I rode in a few weeks ago was.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, dudes, I'm with you on most of this -- I used to be known as quite the cheapskate, in fact -- but when it comes to something like cars or machines or tools or whatever, forget about it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:56 (twenty years ago)

i was on one of the new busses the other day, did someone else complain about the overpowering new car smell? if so i second your complaint.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 4 May 2006 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, I almost forgot. The last two days I've caught the 2 bus down to work, and the same guy was driving both times. I'm convinced he's batshit insane. He talks a line of nonsense when anyone gets on the bus, he weaves crazily back and forth between lanes, and (this is the kicker) he honks the horn constantly. I'm talking one hand on the wheel, one hand on the horn. He was honking as we were riding down Lakeshore when there were no cars for 40-50 yards in any direction. He was honking at a parked delivery van in front of the building I work in. Everyone else riding the bus was laughing. Maybe he just knows a lot of people?

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:07 (twenty years ago)

i've had horn-honking drivers too, on division (where's there's usually a need for constant honking) and ashland (not so much). crazy bus drivers are my favorite ones. i secretly hope for a crash so i can sue the cta. hopefully i won't be too seriously hurt.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Have you ever actually been on a bus here where the driver kept on moving and stopped picking up people because it was too full? It seems like even when there are already a bunch of people crammed in standing on the steps up into the bus, the driver is like EVERYONE NEEDS TO MOVE BACK! MOVE TO THE BACK OF THE BUS!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:23 (twenty years ago)

i've been told they can't pass up a stop if there's a customer waiting, regardless of how full the bus is. it's up to the customer to decide if they want to try to get on or not. i do wonder what the legal occupancy of a transit bus is however.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Thankfully, the buses I ride most are never that crowded. Hell, the 2 and 6 southbound are mostly empty almost every time.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I ride the Division bus to work and it's almost always completely insane.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

the 66 bus is the worst bus ever in terms of crowding. the #50 damen bus had the worst rating for any line in the cta last year as far as being on time. i've always hated that bus.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

The 6 northbound was super busy today.

regular roundups (Dave M), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

i take the western bus south to the western/congress blue line stop. the bus is crazy full of people when it stops at division but they all get off as it's mostly kids and teachers going to roberto clemente high. then the bus gets crazy full of people again at chicago. but i don't care 'cause i have a seat!

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I just bought a bass drum off ebay for TWELVE DOLLARS (plus S&H). Very exciting.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 4 May 2006 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know the origin of the phrase "...like whoah"? I always assumed it was from that track on the Blueprint, but don't really know.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Thursday, 4 May 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

That makes sense.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 4 May 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Until I saw 'Fast Times' a few weeks ago, I never put it together that 'tubular' refers to surfing inside the curl.
