Jesus, Madchen just checked hers and it had linkified her entire address, effectively making it public.
This is beyond big-corp shit, GF, it's actively bad.

I spent an hour or more reworking my info section and for some reason none of it saved. screw that
― CaptainLorax, Saturday, 1 May 2010 21:43 (sixteen years ago)
it had linkified her entire address, effectively making it public.
i wonder how many people it gave access to that to -- if it were anyone beyond her "friends," then O_O
― ksh, Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:12 (sixteen years ago)
wait, so if you add something to, say, your "Favorite Music" you automatically "Like" it in the sense that you sign up for a fan page for it?
someone just added their last.fm URL to their "Favorite Music" and it showed up in my News Feed as something they "Liked," and now there's a FB page for their last.fm page
A++

yeah i was forced to wipe my whole profile cuz i wouldn't link my profile to any pages
― ibaka flocka flame (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:17 (sixteen years ago)
i wiped my whole profile a few weeks ago and then today the "suggestions" thing popped up with all the shit i had deleted
― hobbes, Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:19 (sixteen years ago)
also, love how the pop up is totally designed to make it as difficult as possible to NOT link to any pages
― hobbes, Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:20 (sixteen years ago)
i literally have a profile picture that's an album cover & two posts and that's it
― ksh, Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:20 (sixteen years ago)
oh, and two groups

I'll co-sign this. It's still the default way to contact most people I'm not on phone or AIM terms with, but if the site keeps getting more annoying I'll be there at the Zuckerberg mob lynching with a sharpened pitchfork.
― Cunga, Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:36 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think this change has happened to me yet, it looks the same.
― a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 1 May 2010 23:08 (sixteen years ago)
if you go to your "info" page on your profile does everything suddenly have links? That's the only way you can tell really, and people hardly ever visit that. sneaky fuckers facebook are.
― stet, Saturday, 1 May 2010 23:11 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah I think it already did? Most of the links don't actually go anywhere.
― a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 1 May 2010 23:15 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, but they're public though -- you can set it so that only your friends can see them on your profile, but they still appear in public at the other end of the links, and to applications, and sites that your friends are visiting.
It's really hard to explain this shit, I'm sure that's not accidental.
― stet, Saturday, 1 May 2010 23:24 (sixteen years ago)
all the profiles haven't switched over to the new format yet, i think?
― ksh, Saturday, 1 May 2010 23:30 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, mine definitely hasn't.
― roxymuzak, Sunday, 2 May 2010 02:31 (sixteen years ago)
Mine just did because I tried to edit it :/
So I just deleted 4/5 of what I had listed. It was half made up words and sillness anyway, but I dont care if my profile says I like Futurama and the Cocteau Twins, yeesh.

"Instant Personalization Pilot ProgramControl how select partners can personalize their features with my public information when I first arrive on their websites"
^Does this have ANYTHING to do with the connection/community page feature, or is it only to do with non-Facebook sites?
― roxymuzak, Sunday, 2 May 2010 20:53 (sixteen years ago)
No -- that's about sending all your other info to those sites, I think.
― stet, Sunday, 2 May 2010 20:57 (sixteen years ago)
just checking, cause i unchecked that box, and my profile is normal
― roxymuzak, Monday, 3 May 2010 03:48 (sixteen years ago)
lol, just got my first new format friend request email. Now instead of "Yoyo Yaya has added you as a friend" it's "Yoyo Yaya wants to be Friends on Facebook".

I think the most alarming thing abt these new community pages - have a look at the one above as an example - it appears to look for the groupname keyword, and then shovels posts people made with that keyword into the group's feed. I sincerely fucking hope it only does that if you are IN said group. Otherwise, wth!?!
― Eyjafjallalalalalatrolololol (Trayce), Monday, 3 May 2010 23:37 (sixteen years ago)
probably any mention of a key term that's been made under Everyone security settings -- that's my guess anyway

vaguely considered the idea of becoming a fan of "being assfucked by mark zuckerberg" but that would imply that I actually cared enough about facebook to do anything other than piss and moan about it *crosses arms, looks into the distance*

Yeah, they're separate things -- personalisation only happens on Yelp and Pandora so far.
It might not be a bad idea to sign out of facebook when not on, or keep a separate browser for it. Amount of stuff they'll share with random sites is only going up.

not exactly breaking news, but still interesting to compare
Facebook Privacy Policy circa 2005:
No personal information that you submit to Thefacebook will be available to any user of the Web Site who does not belong to at least one of the groups specified by you in your privacy settings.
Facebook Privacy Policy circa 2006:
We understand you may not want everyone in the world to have the information you share on Facebook; that is why we give you control of your information. Our default privacy settings limit the information displayed in your profile to your school, your specified local area, and other reasonable community limitations that we tell you about.
Facebook Privacy Policy circa 2007:
Profile information you submit to Facebook will be available to users of Facebook who belong to at least one of the networks you allow to access the information through your privacy settings (e.g., school, geography, friends of friends). Your name, school name, and profile picture thumbnail will be available in search results across the Facebook network unless you alter your privacy settings.
Facebook Privacy Policy circa November 2009:
Facebook is designed to make it easy for you to share your information with anyone you want. You decide how much information you feel comfortable sharing on Facebook and you control how it is distributed through your privacy settings. You should review the default privacy settings and change them if necessary to reflect your preferences. You should also consider your settings whenever you share information. ...
Information set to “everyone” is publicly available information, may be accessed by everyone on the Internet (including people not logged into Facebook), is subject to indexing by third party search engines, may be associated with you outside of Facebook (such as when you visit other sites on the internet), and may be imported and exported by us and others without privacy limitations. The default privacy setting for certain types of information you post on Facebook is set to “everyone.” You can review and change the default settings in your privacy settings.
Facebook Privacy Policy circa December 2009:
Certain categories of information such as your name, profile photo, list of friends and pages you are a fan of, gender, geographic region, and networks you belong to are considered publicly available to everyone, including Facebook-enhanced applications, and therefore do not have privacy settings. You can, however, limit the ability of others to find this information through search using your search privacy settings.
Current Facebook Privacy Policy, as of April 2010:
When you connect with an application or website it will have access to General Information about you. The term General Information includes your and your friends’ names, profile pictures, gender, user IDs, connections, and any content shared using the Everyone privacy setting. ... The default privacy setting for certain types of information you post on Facebook is set to “everyone.” ... Because it takes two to connect, your privacy settings only control who can see the connection on your profile page. If you are uncomfortable with the connection being publicly available, you should consider removing (or not making) the connection.

Today I was tipped off that there is a major security flaw in the social networking site that, with just a few mouse clicks, enables any user to view the live chats of their ‘friends’. Using what sounds like a simple trick, a user can also access their friends’ latest pending friend-requests and which friends they share in common. That’s a lot of potentially sensitive information.Unbelievable I thought, until I just tested the exploit for myself. And guess what? It works.
