12k in 55 mins BITCHES!! (this is def my best time yet)
Can't work out how fast this is in miles per minute cos my mind is rubbish, but this sounds solid!

mad props

going out at 6am to avoid heat and be able to run more ofteni woke up at 5:45 today to go out and it was luxuriously quiet out there b/c it's saturdaygranted, i work on sat. mornings, but if i get up and run with the dog before work i feel good about eating startling amts of vietnamese food after work.

think i will sign up for race for the cure team at work because it's a saturday morning 5k one month away. that way i have some kind of goal that makes morning running more reasonable?
― tehresa, Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:51 (sixteen years ago)
Was thinking of signing up at work for the same thing!
― ljubljana, Sunday, 2 May 2010 00:39 (sixteen years ago)
well, i signed up about an hour ago and already raised $120 of my $125 goal thanks to two very, very generous people, so maybe i'll aim a little higher :)
― tehresa, Sunday, 2 May 2010 00:41 (sixteen years ago)
i think this means i have to run really fast, too. or something.
Hope you managed to dodge the drug test at the finish...
Hahaha!

This was a beautiful morning for a run 70 and windy! But I didn't take advantage of it. Walked to the gym, tried to take a "boot camp" class, but the mob of regulars elbowed me out of the way and got all the equipment. So I ran on the treadmill. I did one of my miles in 7:21. IT SUCKED SO BAD.
― fabulous mussels (Jesse), Sunday, 2 May 2010 05:04 (sixteen years ago)
Now that I've been running outside for a couple of years, I don't think I can ever step on a treadmill again.
― Jeff, Sunday, 2 May 2010 05:05 (sixteen years ago)
Why not?
― fabulous mussels (Jesse), Sunday, 2 May 2010 05:27 (sixteen years ago)
The Bally's in your hood is starting to piss me off - a number of the treadmills are somehow bouncy in a way that makes it feel like you could twist your ankle. And sometimes the belts slips, which is really terrifying, esp. at higher speeds.
― fabulous mussels (Jesse), Sunday, 2 May 2010 05:28 (sixteen years ago)
Because treadmill running is boring and monotonous.
― Jeff, Sunday, 2 May 2010 06:40 (sixteen years ago)
i was such a dumbass before and never brought water, but on longer runs it really makes a difference. was i the only one who never di this?
― plax (ico), Sunday, 2 May 2010 10:13 (sixteen years ago)
I do in the winter but since the bubblers are back on, I'm running without my bottle these days. It's nice, I like not having to carry anything.
― Jeff, Sunday, 2 May 2010 11:47 (sixteen years ago)
i can't do treadmill. i feel like i can't breathe on them because the air is standing still (i mean i *can* breathe it just seems like i'm not). and they are boring.
― Guns, Computer, The Internet (harbl), Sunday, 2 May 2010 12:49 (sixteen years ago)
i feel like i can't breathe when it's 85ยบ because the air is standing still! i like treadmills for intervals but i agree, they are very boring!
― tehresa, Sunday, 2 May 2010 13:07 (sixteen years ago)
just doing my research, with 8 weeks to go- is this a lot for a half marathon?
In Achill, there is one hill climb of around 92m and a couple of smaller climbs of 47-50m
― scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 01:19 (sixteen years ago)
I don't know anything about hills. Even the smallest inclines bug the hell out of me. All hills should be flattened.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 01:35 (sixteen years ago)
well i'll talk to the organisers about the possibility but with 2 months to go it's not likely tbh
― scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 01:38 (sixteen years ago)
9k in 45:40! Very happy with that, especially as the 10k is on Saturday week.
On another note, wonder whether people listen to music while running, and if so what? I am aware that I am supposed to be listening to my body, but i'm afraid I'll get bored... I was given a dvd with every UK number 1 since 1952 so I have been working my way through that, loaded onto an ipod shuffle. now have a routine of going thru the relevant entries on www.freakytrigger.co.uk/popular when I get back in from running.
― p-dog, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 12:10 (sixteen years ago)
You're nuts. I despise flat courses. The more hills, the better. Bring 'em on. Incidentally, the Texas hill country is really great for hilly trail races; the last race I ran was called Hells Hills.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 13:17 (sixteen years ago)
^I guess it depends on where you live. I feel the same way about hills as Jeff, but I live and started running in a very flat place. I just ran my first 5k a few weeks ago and there were only a few small hills on the course but it brought my time down quite a bit. I would, however, really like to get used to running on hills.
― peacocks, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 13:38 (sixteen years ago)
there were a few small hills the last day, they didn't bother me at all- nor did running on the beach, which a lot of people were complaining about. struggle more on long strights when you don't seem to be getting anywhere if i'm honest.
― scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 13:45 (sixteen years ago)
oh yeah that sucks too, running can get boring.
― peacocks, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 14:00 (sixteen years ago)
Five miles in 0:58 for me last night. Tried to go a bit faster, but it's tough to do with a dim headlamp on a twisty, rocky, hilly trail in the woods. Great run, though. Need to do more night running!
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 14:12 (sixteen years ago)
This was after dark, of course.
wow that sounds fun. I would definitely break something or become distracted by animal noises.
― peacocks, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 14:18 (sixteen years ago)
become distracted by animal noises.
This happens like every 15 seconds, actually, and it's kinda creepy... makes me run faster.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 14:20 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i'd be more likely to hyperventilate than anything else.
― scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 14:21 (sixteen years ago)
Chicago is flat, flat, flat, which is great in a way b/c it makes running and biking easier, but it sucks b/c it would be nice to have hills to work against. Also, hills add tons of visual interest.
― fabulous mussels (Jesse), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 15:54 (sixteen years ago)
You're nuts.
You're right. Actually I'm just not conditioned to run them. Which makes miserable when I encounter them. Maybe if I had hillier terrain around here I would like them better.
I ran the Stanford Dish run in January and those hills nearly killed me. And the downhill parts were terrifyingly fast.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:33 (sixteen years ago)
I always run with music. I think the whole idea that you have to listen to your body or that you're missing out on the true experience of running is bogus. I like to rock out.
I usually run with randomly selected songs from my 3+ star playlist. So that's 1500 songs to choose from, all of which I am happy to hear while running.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:39 (sixteen years ago)
i'd have to keep skipping, cos i'm fussy even within my own 4+ star list
― scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:46 (sixteen years ago)
sometimes the right song will give me some extra pep when i'm a little winded.
― Aerosol, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:49 (sixteen years ago)
My body's not making very interesting noises. Would rather listen to music.
I have an ipod shuffle that I've loaded with rhythm-heavy songs of all stripes. I listen to what I like, which is a fairly wide variety of stuff. Also never the same songs in a row thanks to the shuffle. I find metal particularly good for winter. Am psyched about new Nachtmystium because it sounds groove-heavy and good for running. Jazz and salsa are fun for summer. I dunno, whatever you like. Hawkwind is good for running.

GO HARDER
― scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:51 (sixteen years ago)
I guess i have to ocassionally. I always skip the Smiths songs that come up. Morrisey doesn't make me want to run.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:51 (sixteen years ago)
he makes me want to run ... AWAY FROM HIM
― congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:52 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, nothing fey works for running.
xp YES SIR. I considered entering a race this week, fyi. Didn't do it, but thought about it for ~1hr.
― an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:52 (sixteen years ago)
while wearing headphones? one way to reach a pb i guess...
― scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:52 (sixteen years ago)
(xp)
The Books and Stereolab are suprisingly fun to run too. Also like Fuck Buttons.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:53 (sixteen years ago)
without it being competitive, running with others was completely different, and fun.
― scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:53 (sixteen years ago)
Haven't been running since my knee was hurting pretty bad over the past couple of weeks. Signed up for a 5k (with Jeff and Jesse and others) yesterday since my knee has been feeling better but might regret it; I jogged across the street yesterday to get to the mailbox and could immediately feel it in my knee again :/
I stopped running with music because the physical feeling of the headphones and the cord was distracting to me.
― congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:54 (sixteen years ago)
i like jumped up disco/rawk stuff to ge me going, but really blissy balearic/housey/techno/rnb kinda stuff once im in the zone.
― plax (ico), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 16:55 (sixteen years ago)
I can totally see stereolab being awesome while running. I need to start running with music! Is there a thread about running/exercising playlists?
― peacocks, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 17:16 (sixteen years ago)
n/a rest, cycle. you'll be good for 5k, it's more to avoid too much pain afterwards.
I like my clear head running w/out music, I feel lighter. But if I ran somewhere busier I might jam tunes more often.
― ogmor, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 17:39 (sixteen years ago)
when i was running in rural iowa i felt like an idiot listening to music while running. there were so many other sounds to listen to, birds and whatnot. it's definitely better in the city
― an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Tuesday, 4 May 2010 17:43 (sixteen years ago)
Agreed, re The Books, at least.
I run to newer Radiohead a lot. Also In Utero and lately to Former Ghosts and now The Antlers.
