Facebook quickly becoming more useless, MySpace-like, and bloated by the minute

ksh, Saturday, 1 May 2010 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

facebook is far from useless--but what it is becoming is not fun

call all destroyer, Saturday, 1 May 2010 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

like i figure eventually i'll use it for events and to msg people and that's about it

call all destroyer, Saturday, 1 May 2010 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

w/ the exception of occasional status updates & posts, that's all i use it for now, and i prefer email for messaging people

ksh, Saturday, 1 May 2010 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

the only reason Facebook is more convenient than email is because it's a centralized, near-universal directory of people directly hooked up to a central messaging service

ksh, Saturday, 1 May 2010 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

of course, everything is stuck in FB's walled garden, and in some ways their messaging system isn't nearly as robust as email

eventually, that'll probably change -- i've seen people guess that FB will eventually make it so that every user has a FB email address connected to their accounts so messages can be sent from FB to email and from email to FB. you can already respond to some activity on FB via email now

ksh, Saturday, 1 May 2010 19:53 (sixteen years ago)

Jesus, Madchen just checked hers and it had linkified her entire address, effectively making it public.

This is beyond big-corp shit, GF, it's actively bad.

stet, Saturday, 1 May 2010 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

I spent an hour or more reworking my info section and for some reason none of it saved. screw that

CaptainLorax, Saturday, 1 May 2010 21:43 (sixteen years ago)

it had linkified her entire address, effectively making it public.

i wonder how many people it gave access to that to -- if it were anyone beyond her "friends," then O_O

ksh, Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:12 (sixteen years ago)

wait, so if you add something to, say, your "Favorite Music" you automatically "Like" it in the sense that you sign up for a fan page for it?

someone just added their last.fm URL to their "Favorite Music" and it showed up in my News Feed as something they "Liked," and now there's a FB page for their last.fm page

A++

ksh, Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:16 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i was forced to wipe my whole profile cuz i wouldn't link my profile to any pages

ibaka flocka flame (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:17 (sixteen years ago)

i wiped my whole profile a few weeks ago and then today the "suggestions" thing popped up with all the shit i had deleted

hobbes, Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:19 (sixteen years ago)

also, love how the pop up is totally designed to make it as difficult as possible to NOT link to any pages

hobbes, Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

i literally have a profile picture that's an album cover & two posts and that's it

ksh, Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

oh, and two groups

I'll co-sign this. It's still the default way to contact most people I'm not on phone or AIM terms with, but if the site keeps getting more annoying I'll be there at the Zuckerberg mob lynching with a sharpened pitchfork.

Cunga, Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:36 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, it's solid for keeping me in contact w/ ppl i barely care about

ksh, Saturday, 1 May 2010 22:38 (sixteen years ago)

stet, Saturday, 1 May 2010 23:05 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think this change has happened to me yet, it looks the same.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 1 May 2010 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

if you go to your "info" page on your profile does everything suddenly have links? That's the only way you can tell really, and people hardly ever visit that. sneaky fuckers facebook are.

stet, Saturday, 1 May 2010 23:11 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I think it already did? Most of the links don't actually go anywhere.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 1 May 2010 23:15 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, but they're public though -- you can set it so that only your friends can see them on your profile, but they still appear in public at the other end of the links, and to applications, and sites that your friends are visiting.

It's really hard to explain this shit, I'm sure that's not accidental.

stet, Saturday, 1 May 2010 23:24 (sixteen years ago)

all the profiles haven't switched over to the new format yet, i think?

ksh, Saturday, 1 May 2010 23:30 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, mine definitely hasn't.

roxymuzak, Sunday, 2 May 2010 02:31 (sixteen years ago)

Mine just did because I tried to edit it :/

So I just deleted 4/5 of what I had listed. It was half made up words and sillness anyway, but I dont care if my profile says I like Futurama and the Cocteau Twins, yeesh.

Eyjafjallalalalalatrolololol (Trayce), Sunday, 2 May 2010 03:42 (sixteen years ago)

Now I'm glad that I didn't put anything in my interest list.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Sunday, 2 May 2010 03:57 (sixteen years ago)

I do look forward to finding utterly ridiculous things to like and become a fan of

reading some discussion on this on the internet has introduced a new word to my lexicon: "zuckerpunched"

"Instant Personalization Pilot Program
Control how select partners can personalize their features with my public information when I first arrive on their websites"

^Does this have ANYTHING to do with the connection/community page feature, or is it only to do with non-Facebook sites?

roxymuzak, Sunday, 2 May 2010 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

No -- that's about sending all your other info to those sites, I think.

stet, Sunday, 2 May 2010 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

just checking, cause i unchecked that box, and my profile is normal

roxymuzak, Monday, 3 May 2010 03:48 (sixteen years ago)

lol, just got my first new format friend request email. Now instead of "Yoyo Yaya has added you as a friend" it's "Yoyo Yaya wants to be Friends on Facebook".

Roomful of Moogs (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 3 May 2010 21:34 (sixteen years ago)

i have none of these new changes, i think because i unchecked that little box in my privacy settings. highly recommended.

The Portrait of a Lady of BJs (the table is the table), Monday, 3 May 2010 21:40 (sixteen years ago)

i unchecked the box but my profile is still retarded

Guns, Computer, The Internet (harbl), Monday, 3 May 2010 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

I think the most alarming thing abt these new community pages - have a look at the one above as an example - it appears to look for the groupname keyword, and then shovels posts people made with that keyword into the group's feed. I sincerely fucking hope it only does that if you are IN said group. Otherwise, wth!?!

Eyjafjallalalalalatrolololol (Trayce), Monday, 3 May 2010 23:37 (sixteen years ago)

probably any mention of a key term that's been made under Everyone security settings -- that's my guess anyway

ksh, Monday, 3 May 2010 23:38 (sixteen years ago)

vaguely considered the idea of becoming a fan of "being assfucked by mark zuckerberg" but that would imply that I actually cared enough about facebook to do anything other than piss and moan about it *crosses arms, looks into the distance*

going non-native (dyao), Monday, 3 May 2010 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

maybe there's a facebook group for that dyao

CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

Anyone else uncheck the box but still see Like buttons on blogspot, for example?
