Ralph: What's for lunch tomorrow?
Director: Next!
Ralph: Chicken necks?

Bart: Right, a leprechaun.
Ralph: He told me to burn things.

Viking was a random choice by Ralph based on a recent dream. Another day he would've said pirate, lawyer, board admin etc.

I wish he had said "Oh boy, sleep! That's where I'm a lawyer" because then Vikings would brag about how they are so lawyer at being Vikings and maybe I would be more proud of my career choices.

how does mordy come in after several posts point out that vikings were explorers & that the obvious interpretation isnt just 'excels' but more like 'explores' as in he's a frontiersman, an adventurer, in the world of sleep? that he excels at exploring a dream world of sleep.

i still think that it makes sense to interpret it like option A & once again, that really the ambiguity is intentional, that the joke is meant to imply both A&B, simultaneously, and that they dont contradict each other

except that there is no reason for anybody to think of Vikings as asskickers at anything in particular - they rolled over for Christians almost immediately - maybe they sailed to Canada but we'll never know 'cause they didn't do shit there - appreciate your will to peacemake deej but option A is seriously moronic unless you equate being ancient & getting pwn3d by Xian invaders as "asskicking" - it's like - if he'd said "oh boy, sleep, that's where I'm Chechen!" then I'd guess we wouldn't be having this argument, but the Chechens could kick several Viking nations' asses and still clock out at five sharp

Clearly this debate won't end until someone kidnaps David S. Cohen and tortures the truth out of him.

Is anyone here on "IMDb Pro", apparently you can't get the contact information without?

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 April 2010 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

Texts liberal producers of meaning aside, I really don't think we need to ask the writer what he meant. It's kinda obvious. Not that his opinion is the final word on the matter, but c'mon.

Mordy, Thursday, 29 April 2010 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

the writer dude was already quoted upthread - I know actually reading the thread is an alien idea to you Tuomas - but seriously - anybody who thinks the Vikings were tough needs to have his head examined - last time I checked Vikings bleed the same as anybody - a thirty ought six will fuck up a Viking before he can call on Freya or whoever - they're just fat guys - fuck Vikings imo

brad whitford's guitar explorations (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Thursday, 29 April 2010 00:02 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I checked the video with David Silverman, but he didn't write that episode, and in the interview he only says "I'm pretty sure David Cohen meant...", not "I know for a fact that David Cohen meant...". So obviously he doesn't know for sure what Cohen intended with the line, it's just his interpretation.

Maybe literal ad hominems don't, but figurative ad hominems can weaken your argument, such as, "Insults, that's where I'm a viking."

lol @ your a-peoples-history-of-vikings steez, theres a reason immigrant song is about vikings & not the irish dude

Gifted Unlimited Display Names Universal (deej), Thursday, 29 April 2010 00:23 (sixteen years ago)

We weren't being pompous ... We did come from the land of the ice and snow. We were guests of the Icelandic Government on a cultural mission. We were invited to play a concert in Reykjavik and the day before we arrived all the civil servants went on strike and the gig was going to be cancelled. The university prepared a concert hall for us and it was phenomenal. The response from the kids was remarkable and we had a great time. "Immigrant Song" was about that trip and it was the opening track on the album that was intended to be incredibly different.

lol try again, immmigrant song is about english guys smoking weed and getting w/hot Icelandic ladies

brad whitford's guitar explorations (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Thursday, 29 April 2010 00:34 (sixteen years ago)

In a 1970 radio interview, Plant jokingly recalled:
We went to Iceland, and it made you think of Vikings and big ships... and John Bonham's stomach... and bang, there it was - Immigrant Song![1]

Mordy, Thursday, 29 April 2010 00:36 (sixteen years ago)

Plant didn't get his own joke - the joke in immigrant song is that Vikings think they're tough but can't even find Winnipeg on a map - RIP Vikings & their jokes

under my government the right to give a Viking the business end of your rifle if he removes his helmet in a lady's presence will not be abridged

I think my favorite part about this is how this debate is that this is the closest we've come so far to proving that brain viruses can exist a la neal stephenson's snow crash

I Think Ur a Viking (dyao), Thursday, 29 April 2010 00:55 (sixteen years ago)

lol I wanted to bring that up but felt it would only do harm xp

Varg Vikinem (jjjusten), Thursday, 29 April 2010 00:56 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think cow tools could ever be as divisive as sleep Viking, it's just vague, there aren't two definite interpretations that would divide folks like here.

Tuomas, Thursday, 29 April 2010 00:57 (sixteen years ago)

of course part of being a fundamentalist "B" grouper means u think that there is only one worthwhile interpretation so
