At that point Simpsons still had good and clever jokes most of the time.

dudes it's pretty bad when a Finnish dude who doesn't know how to use Google has a more nuanced understanding of the English language than you.

B) a bullied little kid dreaming of being an actual Viking isn't much of a gag
HE IS DREAMING HE IS A CONQUERING WARRIOR BECAUSE IRL HE GETS CONQUERED BY THE WARRIOR BULLIES.

results of other internet poll
"I dream I'm a viking" (171) 64.77%"I'm a champion sleeper" (93) 35.23%
― nagl that's where ur a viking (cozen), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:42 (sixteen years ago)
that is overcomplicating it, gd. vikings are just cool and exciting and that's why ralph likes being one in his dreams.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:43 (sixteen years ago)
it figures that a scandinavian would just ASSUME that english speakers use the word 'viking' to mean 'good at something' (when really it's just a figure that only a semi-retarded american would dream about being)

I'm not saying I have a more nuanced understanding, but the way Ralph put emphasis on the words of the sentence made me immediately interpret the joke as "excelling in sleep". And my argument B doesn't really have to do with the English language (yes, I know "Viking" isn't a common metaphor in English, but Ralph uses the language in a rather idiosyncratic manner) rather than how Simpsons gags work.
Yes, I get this, but the bullied becoming the bully in his dreams is still a rather dull and unimaginative joke, and I think at that point Simpsons were generally better than that. Now, if the episode had actually shown Ralph's dream after his line, and it would've been some surreal and Ralphesque interpretation of what being a Viking means, that would've been a typical Simpsons gag. But since all we got was that one line, I interpreted it as "Viking of sleep", because that's more like a Simpsons joke to me.

Anyway, I read this thread. I hate when someone on one side of an argument takes the lazy option of assuming less-than-sincere motives on those on the other side, but option A reppers, seriously?
