srsly what did this thread start as i'm at work and i really wanna know

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:03 (sixteen years ago)

btw actually yes, actual leftists should always note that liberals condescend terrifically to the dumb ol' masses who just don't know what's good for them & have been doing so forever, this has been a problem with liberals since time immemorial & if you don't believe me, hasten thee to a couple of state central committee conventions - the only way you can miss this indisputable fact is if you are the knight errant for the democratic party, protecting their name from unfair besmirching far & wide

dude you know I'm the democrat-apologist not the 'liberal'-apologist. liberal's an empty pejorative term that can be used to describe you, me, both, or neither of us.

iatee, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:04 (sixteen years ago)

that's where I'm a liberal

do you guys have any opinions on your preferences for vietnamese food versus portugese food while you're at it

never had portugese food except for the portegese bread I bake ("broa" it's called), which is OK - unless my impression is wrong, portugese isn't the most vegetarian-interesting cuisines

iberal's an empty pejorative term that can be used to describe you, me, both, or neither of us

I really don't think it is - it's essentially the political equivalent of "hipster," i.e., if it's a phantom, it's one everybody's seen enough of to know that they want to avoid it

brad whitford's guitar explorations (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:07 (sixteen years ago)

portuguese sardines are pretty awesome imo

Oh boy, ILX! That's where I'm a Whiney! (dyao), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

also if you want to shift terms I'm just as comfortable saying "the Democratic party is incredibly condescending," which was true thirty years ago & has nothing to do with the president

xpost lol I have a line about portugese sardines in the chorus of a recent song

sure, but i've been told ILX policy dictates we're allowed to ask politely, no questions asked

I've no idea why this thread has 500+ answers, but I just wanted to say I've always thought it was the first option, because...

A) the way Ralph pronounces the sentence, and

B) a bullied little kid dreaming of being an actual Viking isn't much of a gag, but Ralph being a "Viking of sleep" is pretty funny.

If the second option would be true, it would be a rather bad joke.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

a bad joke on THE SIMPSONS?!?!?!?!?!?!

actually & I'd think you'd know this, that Tuomas favors that interpretation is kinda the nail in its coffin, ain't it

brad whitford's guitar explorations (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

right, his understanding is obv more nuanced, rather than less complete.

"I'm a champion sleeper" (93) 35.23%

nagl that's where ur a viking (cozen), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

that is overcomplicating it, gd. vikings are just cool and exciting and that's why ralph likes being one in his dreams.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

it figures that a scandinavian would just ASSUME that english speakers use the word 'viking' to mean 'good at something' (when really it's just a figure that only a semi-retarded american would dream about being)

right, his understanding is obv more nuanced, rather than less complete.

I'm not saying I have a more nuanced understanding, but the way Ralph put emphasis on the words of the sentence made me immediately interpret the joke as "excelling in sleep". And my argument B doesn't really have to do with the English language (yes, I know "Viking" isn't a common metaphor in English, but Ralph uses the language in a rather idiosyncratic manner) rather than how Simpsons gags work.

HE IS DREAMING HE IS A CONQUERING WARRIOR BECAUSE IRL HE GETS CONQUERED BY THE WARRIOR BULLIES.

Yes, I get this, but the bullied becoming the bully in his dreams is still a rather dull and unimaginative joke, and I think at that point Simpsons were generally better than that. Now, if the episode had actually shown Ralph's dream after his line, and it would've been some surreal and Ralphesque interpretation of what being a Viking means, that would've been a typical Simpsons gag. But since all we got was that one line, I interpreted it as "Viking of sleep", because that's more like a Simpsons joke to me.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:48 (sixteen years ago)
