As far as Walt and Gale the lab assistant, does Walt have any reason whatsoever to doubt Gus's judgment? I found their level of sharing to be pretty right on.

Well I think it's a bit of the idea of walt not being a good criminal. Walt doesn't exactly have a patent on his formula, and he has zero use to Gus et al once they can recreate what Walt does. It's in Walt's interest to keep his secrets close to the vest, otherwise Gus will sic the cousins on him as soon as Walt can't provide new information. He's too shortsighted, too trusting.

I don't think Gus would sic the cousins on Walt. Having Gale learn the formula is merely a contingency plan if and when the cousins kill Walt.

Or when Walt dies of cancer.

One thing I found interesting is that Gus said a few episodes ago that he doesn't use fear as a motivator. It will be interesting to see if he can continue that path through these latest issues.

I think Gus is the one... besides nicely mirroring the phone call in the opening scene which showed that he was never on good terms with that branch of the family, he probably realized that even if the twins succeeded in killing Hank, they'd still demand to get Walt at some point - those dudes can't be placated. By giving Hank a heads-up, there was at least that chance that he could take out one or both of them. (And the flashback with the uncle was another great appearance for that actor!)

I watched season 2 in a short block of a few days and I'm kind of hazy on a lot of it but has this season really just taken this whole show to the next level or what?

it feels like i guess a lot of big shit has gone down...after a lot of pieces being put in place.

i'm guessing now the cops go wild on hank's operation now that two people tried to kill him, obv he's on the right track etc.

they might make the twin's connection to Tuco, but i'm not convinced they won't assume it had something to do with Jesse aswell.

the first four eps or so have been all setup and not that great but damn when it got its tires on the ground it got ROLLIN

my guess is that this will lead the cops/DEA to connect the dots to the murder house from last ep &, if not to some direct info on Walt (they were stalking him, after all, & prob kept notes of some kind, however cryptic), at least back to the crude "Heisenberg" sketch & this will finally put Walt on their radar? Much to their credit tho & already noted in this thread is the writer's knack for thwarting conventions & mixing the pacing up in unexpected & original ways.

I think someone mentioned this as well, but another thing I've really grown to appreciate abt. this series is how rarely the writers have employed the narrative crutch of cliffhanger endings, or at least particularly gimmicky ones. I'm a sucker for that stuff, admittedly, but you know that any series of this stripe, even the good ones, would have had the last couple eps end five minutes or so earlier than the BB guys did. Like if the last ep ended w/ Hank in the parking lot waiting for the warrant to be served, or if this last one had ended on Hank counting down one minute on his car display. The tension is thick enough, naturally, w/o having to rely on such devices & if they had done so OMG the wait week to week would be fucking UNBEARABLE.

I'm surprised nobody brought this up, and I'm fully prepared to be jumped on for this statement, but a big downer for me is that the women characters in the show seem to be really badly or aggravatingly written. Skyler in particular, while perfectly acted, is this archetypal wifely shrew and foil who I dread seeing every time she comes on screen.

love that they're starting to address this and skyler's sanctimoniousness this season through her relationship w/ted

Amazing episode (esp. the end) but I'm finding Jesse's petulance a little hard to take frankly.

yea, i feel like jesse's dialogue has been a little ott lately. minor gripe though, i mean this episode holy shit! hank has really become the center of everything, which is cool shift in focus.

in the av club review they said that in the opening flashback the twins' uncle was talking to gus on the phone, referring to him as a south american and "generalissimo" - you guys get all that? i remember the line about not trusting south americans but i must've been zoning out on the other details.

he was speaking unfavorably about him with someone else i think? something like "some cook he is, more like fry cook." and then something else about how dirty south americans are.

I can't tell if they are setting up Jesse as having a death wish or just imply that he's too stupid to realize that's the natural consequence of his threats.

it's got to be a bit of both, like when they have that great dead serious monologue about how he's going to get Hank, but throw in some Jesse-isms like "I will haunt his crusty ass FOREVER"

Jesse has always been the herald of head-up-your-ass petulant peter pan punkitude. Losing cute chick just added a great deal of self-pity to the mix.

What I found weird about his rant was his saying walt had ruined his life etc. Like...seems he had nothing pre walt, now still has nothing but also is clean. He wouldn't have even met jane if it wasn't for walt!

that is literally what i said to the tv. "holy shit!" that came after several bits of advice to hank while he was in the car. he didn't seem to hear me.

and i love how like 10 seconds before he's like "hey marie. you know what, i got a feeling things might be OK!"

cannot even imagine what skyler's going to make of all this. surely she'll suspect that walt has somehow led this violence to hank (and she'd be right).

if hank lives or dies, he'll be a hero. defended himself against and ultimately took out two high-ranking Mexican cartel members? looks like he was on the right track all along. and the department was ready to suspend him for whaling on some street-level meth punk? please. they'll be handing him back his gun on their hands and knees. but what about his fucking head? if he lives, how does this not unravel him even further?

that scene with him and marie on the bed was fucking amazing.
