i like to think of deej as the friend i would hang out with on the school yard everyday even though we would get into screeching arguments about sonic vs. mario or superman vs batman or whatev

or even shit ralph wiggum said on the simpsons
― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 09:20 (sixteen years ago)
When Ralph dreams about being a viking - a generally excellent type of person, an achiever, an explorer on the cutting edge - it is ironic considering that Ralph is a special kid who sometimes does stuff like accidentally eat worms. The Simpsons writers chose "viking" rather than "goldfish" or anything else harmless because the difference between Ralph and a Viking is so great. Given that Ralph just experienced the humiliation of being excluded from the rest of the class, he (his character, as written by the Simpsons' writers) may have said "Viking" because that is a dream where he remembers having power. "Viking" is not a metaphor for being excellent at something or 1995 slang for the same.

could you go do it on a schoolyard instead? (xp to whiney)

wow there really is no argument safe from the ILXian penchant for looking down at others via the "I'm more tolerant/open-minded than thou" avenue. btw deej's interpretation is 100% consistent w/option B people's.

haha like looking down on others is a trait peculiar to ILX

dan, looking down at others via the "I'm more tolerant/open-minded than thou" avenue is = ILXian penchant
right, dyao. and the only thing worse than that is what you just did right there.

iatee even surely your good liberal self must own that liberals are among the most condescending assholes in the history of the world
c'mon man I vote the same way as you do but you gotta come correct
― brad whitford's guitar explorations (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 14:53 (sixteen years ago)
yeah sure lots of left-wing people ("liberals") are condescending. so are lots of right-wing people. so are most americans. barack obama isn't more condescending than george bush. there's no reason for people on the left to be buying into stereotypes about 'liberals'.
― iatee, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 14:57 (sixteen years ago)
okay this is the point that makes me wish I hadn't started this thread

actually can we make this into a race thread instead of a politics thread
why do some black people viking at things that white people don't?

― just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:03 (sixteen years ago)
btw actually yes, actual leftists should always note that liberals condescend terrifically to the dumb ol' masses who just don't know what's good for them & have been doing so forever, this has been a problem with liberals since time immemorial & if you don't believe me, hasten thee to a couple of state central committee conventions - the only way you can miss this indisputable fact is if you are the knight errant for the democratic party, protecting their name from unfair besmirching far & wide
― brad whitford's guitar explorations (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:04 (sixteen years ago)
dude you know I'm the democrat-apologist not the 'liberal'-apologist. liberal's an empty pejorative term that can be used to describe you, me, both, or neither of us.

never had portugese food except for the portegese bread I bake ("broa" it's called), which is OK - unless my impression is wrong, portugese isn't the most vegetarian-interesting cuisines

iberal's an empty pejorative term that can be used to describe you, me, both, or neither of us
I really don't think it is - it's essentially the political equivalent of "hipster," i.e., if it's a phantom, it's one everybody's seen enough of to know that they want to avoid it
― brad whitford's guitar explorations (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:07 (sixteen years ago)
portuguese sardines are pretty awesome imo
― Oh boy, ILX! That's where I'm a Whiney! (dyao), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 15:08 (sixteen years ago)
also if you want to shift terms I'm just as comfortable saying "the Democratic party is incredibly condescending," which was true thirty years ago & has nothing to do with the president
xpost lol I have a line about portugese sardines in the chorus of a recent song

I've no idea why this thread has 500+ answers, but I just wanted to say I've always thought it was the first option, because...
A) the way Ralph pronounces the sentence, and
B) a bullied little kid dreaming of being an actual Viking isn't much of a gag, but Ralph being a "Viking of sleep" is pretty funny.
If the second option would be true, it would be a rather bad joke.
