So how come MILLIONS of people apparently watched this episode and took away this reading?

i've been asking around since i saw this thread and *everyone* has assumed that Ralph was dreaming about being a viking. they also now know i spend my time debating these things online instead of just watching porn like most civilized people.

jesus xposts!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 17:26 (sixteen years ago)

itt a strange RALPH asks if you saw the VIKING on that one.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 17:27 (sixteen years ago)

well you just operate on a higher plane of consciousness than the general population then

I am the general population! This is the default, obvious reading of this joke! You "dream" believers are maniacs clinging to an unsustainable, over-stretched, non-joke.

This is kind of like saying that viewing this as a gaping mouth with 3 top teeth and 4 bottom teeth is the obvious, default reading of this image:

When I was a kid I frequently had a recurring dream where I had to fight sapient refrigerators and ovens in a giant, glowing pyramid that had pterodactyls flying over it.

I like the resource-pooling idea. I'd like to get a solid resolution to this.

guys this is INCREDIBLE

but seriously: can ANYONE name any example other than the buffy one of the word viking being used to mean anything other than 'I am probably muscly and wear a hat with horns'???

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

Uh, even on "Buffy" that's probably what it meant. Remember, Anya consorted with actual Vikings once upon a time.

Obama, Wellstone and Darwinfish, Attorneys (Pancakes Hackman), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

I never saw the show so my only Anya reference is the ANTM contestant.. :)

can anyone name one example of someone saying "tastes like...burning!" before that simpsons episode

Oh boy, sleep! That's where I'm a ILXing! (dyao), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 00:01 (sixteen years ago)

What confuses me even more than people defaulting to option A are the ones that truly, honestly CANNOT FATHOM how ANYONE could POSSIBLY consider option A to be valid.

Oh boy, sleep! That's where I'm Ann Reinking! (Stevie D), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 00:06 (sixteen years ago)

xp

the fact that ralph can't make simple grammatically correct phrases "tastes like...burning" / "that's unpossible" etc. is probably a good sign that he's not going to be creating complicated metaphors

iatee, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 00:13 (sixteen years ago)

I still don't get why you guys are arguing that ralph is /intending/ to create a complicated metaphor.

Oh boy, sleep! That's where I'm a ILXing! (dyao), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 00:13 (sixteen years ago)

because that's what the bizarro interpretation depends on?

iatee, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 00:14 (sixteen years ago)

people create silly 'complicated' metaphors all the time through misusing language - how is babee formed - doesn't mean that they did so intentionally

Oh boy, sleep! That's where I'm a ILXing! (dyao), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 00:17 (sixteen years ago)

dipset infiltrator (zvookster), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 00:21 (sixteen years ago)

ralph doesn't recognize the nature of dreaming, he just thinks he's a viking when he goes to sleep because he previously had a dream or series of dreams in which he was a viking. the joke is character-based. ralph doesn't have the self-consciousness necessary for assessing his performance in any field. he's "sad" because he ate a worm, plus he now hasn't got a worm.
