I just got Ethiopiques 8 - "Swinging Addis" and BOY! Woo! Some white-hot shit right there. I almost got my dancing fingers out on the train.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

I saw Terminal in a hotel room a few months ago. It was sucky, yeah, but it did feature Benny Golson as the macguffin, which warmed my heart.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

All of those Ethiopique discs are great. I think 7 is my favorite, or at least the one I've listened to the most, but 8 is also kick-rump.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I saw it in the theatre. In the fucking theatre. I went alone. To a theatre.

I saw that horrible horrible horrible Tom Hanks movie too. He comes from an imaginary country. That's all you need to know -- it's one step from Mypos.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:02 (twenty years ago)

OK, here is what I thought of Crash, copied and pasted from my review elsewhere:

I just don't know where to begin, and I'm afraid to begin because I might never stop.

My biggest beef: The movie was set in what was apparently some parallel-universe LA where characters' lives were a non-stop series of events relating to race race race. This might actually have worked had the film makers not tried to make it realistic at the same time, but had chosen to go for a fantastical or magically-realistic premise. Had that been the case then it would have made sense that every character lives a day-to-day life that involves incidents, conversations, crimes, retaliations, car crashes etc all revolving around race.

Also, SPOILER ALERT, why did the police not come to arrest the Persian owner who shot the little girl while trying to shoot her dad, the locksmith? Is it because the cops were all busy fingering black women and burning cars in which they shot black men?

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I distinctly heard you say "jew"!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:04 (twenty years ago)

I should stop reading about/commenting on that rape case, since it's making me really really really really really really really really really angry.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Jew?

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Flightplan was pretty good though. Jodie Foster (played by Michael Jackson, it seems) plays a mother who is flying with her husband's body from Berlin to NYC on a jumbo jet on which she worked as the propulsion engineer. Mid-flight her daughter disappears--from the airplane, from the flight manifest and from existence ITSELF!! The beginning is a nice drama-thriller setup for a good action-movie ending.

Funfacts! Several times the actors mumble their lines and it sounds very clearly like other words. When the bad guy says "I'm going to cuff you" Jodie Foster seems to reply, "Why Julia Roberts cuff me?" When the lights fail and oxygen masks drop down one of the flight attendants calls out, "You're all pregnant!"

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Ugh. That reminds me of Red Eye, which I ended up seeing because my girlfriend was in love with Cilli@n Murphy. Terrible, terrible movie.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I laughed really hard through many parts of Crash.

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

We watched Red Eye a couple weeks ago because of Cilian's pretty blue eyes. Silly-ass movie (those homeland security officers sure were heroic, though!).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:13 (twenty years ago)

Crash didn't have magic realism, but with that kind of god's-eye tapestry view it felt a little heightened and fantastic - as with Magnolia and Syriana, there's the sense of the storyteller's voice in all of the multiple threads that gives me some suspension of disbelief. The opening scenes felt so singly about race that it seemed a little Ludacris - but I got pulled into the storytelling soon enough and took it on its own terms and got caught up in it.

I thought Terrence Howard and Matt Dillon were both great. Interesting how the father-son storyline is so similar to the one in Syriana.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:16 (twenty years ago)

28 Days was good though. That was a zombie movie I could get into. xpost

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:16 (twenty years ago)

I like Deerhoof. I also like Rachel McAdams. I enjoyed Red Eye well enough, though I'd already seen the best parts in the Scream movies.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Deerhoof-likers, what's the best one?

28 Days Later rulz. We watched Day of the Dead the other night and it really hit home how much the second act of 28DL owes to it.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Now I have purchased my ticket home.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Shatner?

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I also liked 28 days later.
Wait, was that the artsy one where the zombies could run? Because that's the one I'm talking about. Oh yeah, the one with Cillian.
I thought he was funny in Red Eye.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

William Shatner was in several TZ episodes. Like the one with the fortune telling thingie in the diner? That one's great.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Magnolia was satisfying because it was fantastical. Rather than skillfully playing the line, Crash seemed to want to have its feet firmly planted on both sides--realism and pure imagination.

Also, Object Lesson from Crash:

Every race is jerky--White, Black, Persian--every race except Latinos who are hard-working, reasonable, helpful, family-oriented, loyal and friendly.

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Oh,I forgot about Asians, too

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Also, Latinos are hot.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Chris.

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Crash: Worst movie ever, or worst film ever?

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Are you going to be in contact while on your trip, Chris?

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Apparently I have cell coverage in random places in Montana, but less so in random places in North Dakota.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Chris, I'm going to be in town this weekend, so just stay for a few more days, k?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I was able to do my now-traditional calling of friends to announce to them that I was in Minot, though! But I think on the way back the Minot stop might be at an awkward hour.

Jordan, I would but I have a show on Saturday and a cat that thinks I've abandoned her and I am tired of sleeping on a sliver of my ex's bed. But I am sure I'll be back and I would love to visit Madison.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:37 (twenty years ago)

sorry i didn't get to meet ya!

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Me too.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Also this is where I extend a hearty invitation for everyone to visit me in Portland. I have a futon you can crash on and I will bake for you.

Also this is where I thank everyone I met for meeting me and say that I had a lot of fun and think you are all Quality People. And I am sorry that I didn't quite get to meet some of you. I'm sure I'll be back at some point, though, possibly in the summer.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:41 (twenty years ago)

New thread title -- "Chicago: Quality People"

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

It was good to meet you, Chris. Thanks for crashing that weird party with us!

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

This is where I insert a montage of all the fun times we had.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:48 (twenty years ago)

"We'll meet again / Don't know where, don't know when..."

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

We really do need a new thread, though. I was on last night without logging in and, whew.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Got it, sire.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Thank you. I'm fresh out of fun.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Amateur tagger alert.

New thread.

Chicago: Ordinary People

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Ooh ooh! I posted the link as a link and it converted it to the thread title - nifty.

Eazy (Eazy), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Is "Quality People" a running joke?
