― Uncle Shavedlongcock (max), Monday, 3 November 2008 17:35 (seventeen years ago)

― Every Day Jimmy Mod Is Hustlin' (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 3 November 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)
charging obscene amounts of money for what mostly just tastes like microwave dinners
sounds like the Moondance
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 November 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)
My only complaint is that their chicken/dumplings consist of potato dumplings and not big honky dough balls
― Every Day Jimmy Mod Is Hustlin' (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 3 November 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)
except for the dumpling thing that sounds suspiciously like the Five Spot in Clinton Hill
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 November 2008 17:40 (seventeen years ago)
where should i have a late lunch this afternoon? i have a few hours to kill in the east village/l.e.s. before a 4:30 movie. looking for someplace w/vegetarian options, where i can sit and read for a while...
― tipsy mothra, Monday, 3 November 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)
I went to the Five Spot the other week and while I didn't eat there (tho I was tempted), the decor is pretty WTF and kept me amused for about 90 mins just looking around. More former pharmacies, please!

― Every Day Jimmy Mod Is Hustlin' (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 3 November 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)
tipsy, how about clinton street baking company? it shouldn't be too crowded later in the day on a monday.
― lauren, Monday, 3 November 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)
tipsy, i would say lotus lounge on the corner of clinton and stanton, but somebody told me recently that it's closed?
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 November 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)
lol expat

how about clinton street baking company?
yeah that sounds promising, thx. down there i usually end up at angelica or pukk, which are both fine but somewhere different would be nice.
― tipsy mothra, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:01 (seventeen years ago)
morbs and i went somewhere veggie recently but i don't remember the name :(
― highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 3 November 2008 18:06 (seventeen years ago)
there's counter on 1st ave, which is slightly upscale organic veg/vegan.
― lauren, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)
Here's what some guy thought of the Fergus food at Spotted Pig.
http://nyjournal.squarespace.com/journal/2008/10/13/the-spotted-pig.html
I'm going to Bobo and Babbo this weekend. Stoked for the latter.
― Dandy Don Weiner, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)
$17 for a hamburger.
i remember going to the hard rock cafe in new york with my dad and staring unbelievingly at the menu, which listed an $8 hamburger.
/lol, old
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:16 (seventeen years ago)
i've never been to the spotted pig, but to be an authentic gastropub it should require you to order at the bar, serve the chips blisteringly hot, and include the service charge in the bill
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:18 (seventeen years ago)
you could try writing them a letter to complain?
― Uncle Shavedlongcock (max), Monday, 3 November 2008 18:20 (seventeen years ago)
"dear Mr -Z, i have never been to your restaurant but $17 is a ridiculous amount of money to pay for a hamburger"
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:22 (seventeen years ago)
Spotted Pig was a bit of a disappointment to me.
― Michael White, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:22 (seventeen years ago)
Spotted Pig owned by former, original Smiths manager J0e M0ss, yes?
Don't forget: leave the 'service' part of the card receipt blank for Extra Gastro.
I'll read that link momentarily but if there are places to go eat Fergus' food in NYC I encourage you to go for it.
― Bristol Meth (suzy), Monday, 3 November 2008 18:22 (seventeen years ago)
i miss the les lotus. it's been turned into an "irish" bar called... donnybrook.
― lauren, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)
eeesh
it just occurred to me that i've been away so long i have no concept of what reasonable menu prices are in new york anymore
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)
suz, i know, and i'm sort of kicking myself already for deciding to miss out, but it's just not in the budget.
― lauren, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:24 (seventeen years ago)
(the bill at the place he's cooking at tonight adds up faster than, um, a thing that adds up really, really fast.)
― lauren, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:25 (seventeen years ago)
Spotted Pig = overrated.
also, NYMag today goes over cheap eats (via eater.com):http://eater.com/archives/2008/11/cheap_living.php
― Dandy Don Weiner, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:26 (seventeen years ago)
have fun at babbo, btw. based on my one meal there, it definitely lived up to hype.
― lauren, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)
$17 hamburger isnt all that expensive for an 'upscale' restaurant.
also i guarantee you its better than the one you had at the hard rock cafe.
― Uncle Shavedlongcock (max), Monday, 3 November 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)
$17 hamburger is £10 burger and we have plentee of those in London.
Oh L, that is teh suck. There is also the added p4rkins0n's problem - who knows how long before he has to stay out of the kitchen? Mind you, I have never ever ever actually paid to eat at St John because of artworld afterdinners; it is my little hunch that he might be over there and cheffing up for one BUT FOR WHICH ARTIST OR GALLERY? Find out, and dinner is served.
― Bristol Meth (suzy), Monday, 3 November 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)
haha, i would love to spend my afternoon stalking fergus! not in the cards, though, unfortunately. this is the menu for tonight:
http://www.momofuku.com/noodle/fergus.asp
most of these dishes are "small plates," so you can see how the check could easily inflate to ginormous.
― lauren, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:36 (seventeen years ago)
tapas formula:
create menu+ make every portion 1/3 the size, keep price the same+ dim lights= profit!
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:40 (seventeen years ago)
this is the same place that charges $8 for a plate of bread and "artisanal" butters, so go figure. i love the food at the ssam bar, but at this point i think that d.chang sits around cackling while playing in ballpit filled with money.
― lauren, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)
duck fat fried potaters sound yumm yum
― ian, Monday, 3 November 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)
Avoid Bobo. Bruni's review last week in the NYT was pretty spot on. At least it wasn't frighteningly expensive. Among the most disappointing tasting menus I've had. At least the wine pairings were pretty great.
Oh, and I finally ate at Shake Shack. Them burgers are good but I thought the mushroom burgers were basically fried cheese balls.
― Dandy Don Weiner, Sunday, 9 November 2008 19:05 (seventeen years ago)
oh god I want to eat here so badly

one of my friends has been raving about bar boulud. her mother comes into town fairly often, and that's been their go-to spot. it's a bit pricey for me at the moment, though i'd love to try it.

i want a job where i get paid to eat at these places because its going to be very difficult to keep eating at nice restaurants when im not living with parents and have to pay rent
