The last two times I tried to run, it's been really shitty, like I'm immediately out of breath and my legs and knees feel really stiff. I don't know if my beginnerhood is catching up with me, or if my new shoes aren't right, or if I need to get used to wearing shoes with support for overpronaters or what the deal is. I walked almost the whole way today :(

Was that on consecutive days? I'd just take a few days off.
― Jeff, Saturday, 24 April 2010 18:00 (sixteen years ago)
^^^^ yah it just sounds like ur not giving your body enough time to recuperate. also i hav no idea what the srsbiz wisdom is @ this point but i still think stretching is key. u can also try a some basic exercises for your off days 2 stay limber this is def smthn i do
― where display names die, unrecognized (Lamp), Saturday, 24 April 2010 18:05 (sixteen years ago)
those were not on consecutive days. I had a longer-than-usual run that felt pretty good, then waited a day, then had the first shitty run. Then I waited two days until today, had my second shitty run. I'll try taking a longer break before the next run. I stretched out a little before both runs but not very much.
― congratulations (n/a), Saturday, 24 April 2010 18:36 (sixteen years ago)
I'm not big on stretching.
― Jeff, Saturday, 24 April 2010 18:52 (sixteen years ago)
I mean, I move around some before I run, but that's about it. No patience for anything more.
― Jeff, Saturday, 24 April 2010 18:59 (sixteen years ago)
The winner ran in 15:25. My brain just exploded even thinking about that kind of pace.

Yep, I'm aware of other brain exploding things, I just wish there were slower ppl in my neighborhood 5k.

i had a poopy day the other day where i couldn't even make it past one single mile without taking a walking break, but it was at the end of my week (usually i go on M-T-Th, sometimes S) and i rode my bike to work on wednesday. so it was run run bike run and at the end of that i felt like crap.
on the upside, today i got a compliment (from a friend, not a creepy stranger) on my legs!

Ran the 10K. Didn't have to stop, but got a huge stitch about 5mins in that didn't go away until Mile 3. Maybe I ate too much for breakfast. Time was 1.10, it was a dogged plod!

My last three days: 5 + 10 + 10 miles.

barefoot 5k around the lake today in ~23min, which is like ten minutes faster than usual?? something about the change in mechanics makes my usual derpa derp plodding harder/uncomfortable so i'm sort of obligated to go faster. but dang.

broke in my healed legs after my post-half-m stationary month of eating w/ a 26 min 5k. legs still feel great.

There will be no fast paces for me over the next couple of days. 20 to 30 mph winds. I actually don't mind the wind, as long as it is warm.
― Jeff, Thursday, 29 April 2010 09:52 (sixteen years ago)
Today is amazing. 68 and super windy.
Tuesday I ran (on a treadmill) the day after my first heavy weight training session in months. Strangely, I ran my best pace in a long, long time. 3 miles in 29:15, but one mile was ~7:30, which is unheard of.

Especially considering that beforehand I was so stiff that I could bairly descend stairs.

Okay, I am gonna hop on this thread. I am running, seriously, for the first time in 3 years. I started (basically) from scratch two weeks ago. Initially, I was gonna do the C25K program, but I'm thinking of using the Nonrunner's Marathon Training Guide to get ready for (my first) five in two months. I've been running a 5k on the treadmill alternating with lifting/strength training 6 days/ week. I've also been walking 4.5 miles for 5 days every week.
And I'm running down my shoes. I have a neutral stride with a wee touch of underpronation, and no significant pain* (yet) save for shinsplints that have come from the ramp-up in my training schedule. I run slowly – for now – at around 6.5 mph, and intend to average about 20 miles run/week by the end of next month. I'm broke, also, and can only afford +/– $40 on new shoes... and have no problem buying closeouts/discounts/clearance whatever, but I need recommendations of where to look. When I tried them on, I enjoyed Brooks Cloud, Nike Moto, and Adidas Response. I hated the Pegasus 25/26s I tried: they felt clunky and tight in the tongue area. What cushiony (and fairly long-lasting) shoes can I buy on the cheap, and where?
* Slight pain in my right knee as a result of old swimming injuries – not major, but something I want to cushion as much as possible.

Ran about 4 miles at a 7:55 pace today which turned out well considering that I had been awake for 27 hours at the time. I've definitely been picking up the pace recently. Probably because of the short runs and races I've been doing. From now on, I'm going to be dialing it back for distance in prep for my 10 mile race next month and the marathon in October. All I want to do is break 4 hours in the marathon. Just need to stay below 9:09 pace.

any tips for my first 10k race tomorrow? i'm not planning on bringing liquid with me, and i'm thinking an omelette at about 9am will be fine to get me through the race at 12.

looking to beat 70mins, but i'm not even gonna bring a timer so as long as i cover the distance i'll be happy enough.

I'd normally have something a bit sugary before the race. Other than that, just relax and let rip.
― Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Friday, 30 April 2010 14:30 (sixteen years ago)
yeah might dose up on a lucozade or w/e beforehand.

― Jeff, Friday, 30 April 2010 14:57 (sixteen years ago)
What NickB said re sugar. It might be superstition, but I usually have something with carbs/sugar before I run and if I don't, I feel less peppy.
Got to 1 mile yesterday and wanted to DIE. Slogged on another half mile, then walked and went to the gym to do weights instead. I don't understand why some days that are like any others I feel like I'm running on fly paper. WTF?

Runningwarehouse.com is still a great place to look for cheaper shoes. If that fails I just use froogle.com to fond the cheapest price on the ones I want.
― Jeff, Friday, 30 April 2010 15:08 (sixteen years ago)
I have a neutral stride with a wee touch of underpronation
Maybe try Asics Gel Stratus or Saucony Grid Fusion 2? I think they're both very neutral and are at the cheaper end of both ranges of cushioning shoe. Haven't used either myself, but have run in the next ones up which just have some extra twiddly bits but probably no real performance advantages.

i ask bc i just ate one
― plax (ico), Friday, 30 April 2010 16:51 (sixteen years ago)
Dunno, but you should probably wait 1 hour before swimming.
For real though, why wait? The only reason I could think of to wait would be concerns over bowel activity.

dog balked on me but i'm about to go try a 3/4 mile fun run solo for the first time since i twisted my ankle. It's still a slight bit balky, but 1/2 hour stationary bikes every day have it loose and i gotta start sooner or later. here goes.
