When Jack said "You look just like him" do you think he meant HIS DAD?

jaymc, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

A HORSE

max, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 14:40 (sixteen years ago)

the "you look just like him" line last night was so clearly about smokey looking like locke, c'mon

Spiney G. Porcupinegarden (some dude), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

you sure are going to look dumb when in the show finale they reveal retroactively that each person sees the smoke monster as someone different who was important from their life

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:04 (sixteen years ago)

when they say he looks like locke the sound of their voice is being translated by smokey's babelfish

abanana, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:08 (sixteen years ago)

haha they'll do a total shutter island reveal with a bunch of old scenes playing back differently

Spiney G. Porcupinegarden (some dude), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

I liked how Jack, knowing that Locke is not really Locke, expects him to act like Locke: "John Locke said we had to stay here."

President Keyes, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:19 (sixteen years ago)

i already know the last scene of the show. here it is:

guy enters huge room filled with hospital beds and all the lost characters are on the beds strapped to machines. another guy is there with a clipboard.

guy to the other guy: well, shut it down. obama has cut off all funding for the dharma dream experiment.

the other guy: what do we do with the bodies?

first guy: dispose of them.

*fade to black*

oh yeah it's gonna happen. just you wait.

scott seward, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

no, that was just the script they sent to Obama to scare him into moving his address off of their season premiere date

Spiney G. Porcupinegarden (some dude), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:46 (sixteen years ago)

first guy: dispose of them

Walt on a horse: WAIT...I've had a better idea!

good interview here of exec producers - no spoilers obviously, but may be a bit demystifying which could turn people off.

mini-jack is nu-walt? maybe it's their loophole for not figuring out how to get walt to stop puberty between seasons.

dialogue in this episode reached new low

Spiney G. Porcupinegarden (some dude), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

I would say re-reached the same low.

Lindelof: It’s like when you spend time with a 3-year-old, you quickly find out that one question just begets another — there’s a “why” in the wake of every “why” — and the only way to end the conversation is to say, “Oh look, a Chuck E. Cheese!” The show is doing its best to say, “Oh look, Chuck E. Cheese!” For example, we’ve now given the viewers as much as we’re willing to say about the numbers, and we’re moving on.

Spiney G. Porcupinegarden (some dude), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

re: dialogue, I think this season is missing Brian Vaughan.

Nom Nom Nom Chomsky (WmC), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

was pretty clear he meant actual john locke.

agree some terrible dialogue, i love the amount of times lost dialogue feels like monkey island or one of those games. eg lapidus "THERE'S SOME CANNED FOOD IN THE GALLEY LETS ALL EXIT THIS SCENE AND GET SOME."

overall thought this ep was great tho, plot moved along nicely.

what i do think is v stupid is like hurley's whole "maybe jacob wants us to go to locke thing" is basically just a massive stupid meaningless plot device to join the two groups together.

why in the name of jesus would any of them want to go hang out with the swirling murderous smoke monster? how or why could that ever seem a good idea?

I see what this is (Local Garda), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

because Michael's ghost told Hurley to, and uh... I guess Michael works for the island? or Jacob? who knows. most of the characters have no idea what they're doing, that's why they'll follow just about anybody who has the vaguest sense of direction or leadership

Nhex, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

it seems a really hollow plot device, and you know full well they'll never explain why jacob/michael's ghost thought that was a good idea except that every single action anyone ever does had to lead to the same conclusion, it's FATE wow!

I see what this is (Local Garda), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

I actually like this show a lot more when it's a proper ensemble cast thing - ie not hamstrung by having to have every episode centre around one character. Thought this one moved things on pretty nicely actually.

Who else thought either Jin or Sun was going to get zapped by the fence as they ran towards one another?

There's no way Sayid killed Desmond. Actually, alt-Desmond is really starting to act like Jacob.

So Jack's a Smokey stooge now? Certainly looked like that rocket should have killed him.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

Sayid didn't kill Desmond, and Jack is not any more of a "stooge" than he ever was (which was pretty stoogey, let's be honest).

he can't get killed by things though, right? on the island.

what's "_oundelay"? roundelay?

abanana, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 21:54 (sixteen years ago)

was pretty clear he meant actual john locke.

Yeah, I know. I just meant that when Smokey said "we need to leave the island," Jack was like, "But Locke wanted to stay on the island," as though because Smokey looked like Locke he was supposed to share his opinions. Just seemed dumb in a Jack sort of way.

President Keyes, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

Dumb... like a fox!

I haven't rewatched any episodes, but Dead Michael didn't tell Hurley to bring everyone to Smokey-Locke IIRC. Didn't Hurley initially say that Jacob told him to take everyone to Smokey-Locke which Richard promptly called bullshit on. Hurley later admitted to Jack that he made the whole thing up and that he was just winging it. Jack's nonsensical response was to agree with Hurley to visit Smokey-Lockey anyway. For me it makes that whole plot point more wtf rather than less wtf.

Beer me a Lagavulin (KMS), Thursday, 22 April 2010 01:20 (sixteen years ago)

When Hurley said it was Jacob who told him what to do, it was actually Michael, who'd been telling him to do stuff all episode both on and off-camera. Regardless of which "side" it benefits, it seems clear that all of the originals are supposed to get together and decide what they're going to do regarding Smokey and getting off the island - doesn't surprise me that the "good" side and the ghosts with them were pushing them together. Jack's gave a whole speech about why he went along with Hurley, it wasn't totally nonsensical!

Nhex, Thursday, 22 April 2010 01:23 (sixteen years ago)

Why doesn't the secret message in that Wired article make any sense? Think I'm missing a bit of it that's maybe only in the magazine?

James Mitchell, Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:01 (sixteen years ago)

How does on-island Claire know that Jack's her brother? This was bugging me all episode but afaic remember she never even knew Christian's name. Jack knew so did he tell her when they returned to the island?

Not the real Village People, Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:24 (sixteen years ago)

When Hurley said it was Jacob who told him what to do, it was actually Michael, who'd been telling him to do stuff all episode both on and off-camera.

Fair enough, but how are you able to determine what Michael said to Hurley "off camera". If Michael did tell Hurley to go to Flocke off-camera (he definitely did not do this on-camera), why does Hurley feel it is necessary to lie to Jack and claim that the decision to visit FLocke was Hurley's alone? Why is that any better than him telling Jack that Michael's ghost told him to visit FLocke?

Jack's gave a whole speech about why he went along with Hurley, it wasn't totally nonsensical!

If the main gist of Jack's response to Hurley is that he is going "to sit back and listen to other people tell him what to," why does he refuse to go along with Sawyer's escape plan for everyone in the very next episode. Perhaps his conversation with Hurley isn't completely nonsensical but what was the point of it?

Beer me a Lagavulin (KMS), Thursday, 22 April 2010 05:38 (sixteen years ago)

You're overthinking this, man. I mean, 90% of this stuff is just classic "we have to go over to this side of the island!" Lost action-logic. This is a show where people lie all the time to get people to do things and are eternally evasive with answers! And where those same people will just go along for it and walk across the island again. I think it's pretty safe to assume, at least within that one episode, that Hurley was just following ghost orders, and taking up the traditional Lost "just do what I tell you, because i say so" tack. (And even Hurley was totally surprised that Jack had such a casual attitude about going to meet Locke.)

As for Jack's change of heart, my guess is that once he actually met and saw Dead Locke alive in the flesh for the first time, he immediately caught onto the evil there, that aspect was played up - at least he was pretty freaked out by it, naturally. According to that Wired image there's going to be more between them next episode.

I think the key is that, while having everybody meet HAS to happen (regardless of which side wins, both sides seem to agree on this) Jack and Sawyer's plans and goals are definitely different - Jack never said anything about wanting to escape the island since coming back in '77. I mean, does anyone really believe the island or Fate is gonna let Team Submarine win the day, anyway? Don't believe the show is pointing us in that direction, necessarily. Also guessing this is why Widmore turned on them at the end, since Jack was missing, whatever he wanted to do couldn't happen.

Nhex, Thursday, 22 April 2010 07:16 (sixteen years ago)

The really dumb thing about all this is that they could have just got everyone back together by having Sun trek off into the jungle to find Jin.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:05 (sixteen years ago)

How does on-island Claire know that Jack's her brother? This was bugging me all episode but afaic remember she never even knew Christian's name. Jack knew so did he tell her when they returned to the island?

Jack didn't tell her, Smokey did.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:06 (sixteen years ago)

x-post

I'd like to think that the idea to go talk to Locke came from Hurley's head rather than from Michael. Hurley is a conciliator. It seems natural that he'd favor negotiations.

President Keyes, Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:08 (sixteen years ago)

there better be some serious action in the next episode. tired of smokey spouting action movie cliches everytime widmore's crew does something. "It's on!" *evil glare* *fade to commercial* "Now we dance!" *evil glare* *fade to commercial* "Oh no he didn't!" *evil glare* *fade to commercial* "Check, please!" *evil glare* *fade to commercial*

"LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED RIGHT NOW!" *EVIL SKOT GLARE* *FADE TO PIE*
