I'm really tired of weather that is not 80 degrees or higher.

Jeff, Sunday, 18 April 2010 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

Arrived 5 minutes before the race, and didn't have time to apply Body Glide. Decided to cut my losses and run/walk the second half to avoid excessive chafing. Next time I'll be sure to arrive early. Ouch!

today's run: ~4.9 mi in ~42 minutes

prominent French anthropologist Didier Fassin (los blue jeans), Monday, 19 April 2010 00:48 (sixteen years ago)

that's quick!

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Monday, 19 April 2010 00:52 (sixteen years ago)

It's weird though, I have a hard time getting < 25 minutes in a 5k. Once I hit my groove I just zone out and keep going

prominent French anthropologist Didier Fassin (los blue jeans), Monday, 19 April 2010 00:53 (sixteen years ago)

and I can't sprint from a stop at all

prominent French anthropologist Didier Fassin (los blue jeans), Monday, 19 April 2010 00:54 (sixteen years ago)

my 5k times are better per mile than my 8k, but yeah not significantly or anything. i prefer to think it's because i have iron man stamina tbh.

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Monday, 19 April 2010 00:55 (sixteen years ago)

best compliments I have received when running:

Damn, [los blue jeans] looked like he was running from the police!

[los blue jeans], you looked like a freakin gazelle out there.

now, i'm just after immersing myself in the wonder of the ronaldinho thread and am wondering if either of those comments are on shaky ground.

best i go to bed, maybe

o

I can see what you are saying there, and reading it now it does look kind of o_O. I don't think either person intended anything other than "you look really focused and kinda desperate"

prominent French anthropologist Didier Fassin (los blue jeans), Monday, 19 April 2010 02:40 (sixteen years ago)

:) that ronaldinho thread would poison the most innocent mind

i don't want to go to work i want to go running

harbl, Monday, 19 April 2010 10:57 (sixteen years ago)

Well I'd rather do anything than work most days tbh

No miles logged this weekend. I am a failure and embarrassment.

Jeff, Monday, 19 April 2010 12:41 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't log any miles either, but kilometers I did log (very lame joke sorry and it's not even friday..). Just over 7 km in 36 minutes. I had to take a two minute walk after 5.5 km though, that's what you get for starting and trying to maintain too high a tempo. (you know, when you think after about 20 minutes of running "hey, it's going very smoothly today". And then 5 minutes later it's like "wtf why am I panting like a horse?")

willem, Monday, 19 April 2010 13:03 (sixteen years ago)

wtf you ran as part of a panto horse?

my right knee refuses to let me run more than 25 miles a week, the bastard

ice cr?m, Monday, 19 April 2010 13:13 (sixteen years ago)

I ran 0 miles this weekend.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Monday, 19 April 2010 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

Don't you feel like a failure?

I can't wait till my marathon training starts. I think I may like group runs.

Jeff, Monday, 19 April 2010 15:35 (sixteen years ago)

I had a wonderful weekend in other ways. But my first run this week is probably going to be tough. Especially b/c this weekend I wore new shoes that scraped skin of my ankles.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Monday, 19 April 2010 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

getting enough protein makes a huge difference, i wish i knew that a long time ago. i mean i knew but not how much. i think i am gonna take like 2 minutes off my 5k time next time lol

harbl, Monday, 19 April 2010 21:19 (sixteen years ago)

really? how so?

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Monday, 19 April 2010 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

i just feel noticeably stronger, especially going uphill

harbl, Monday, 19 April 2010 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

i mean because i make a point of having protein powder right when i get home. i used to sometimes not eat anything for hours.

harbl, Monday, 19 April 2010 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

Here's a photo from my 30k race this weekend:

http://stagingimages20.brightroom.com/imgbkp03/64999/64999-002-005f.jpg

Note the water covering the entire trail –- it rained heavily the night before. My feet were soaked 10 seconds into the run and stayed that way the whole race. I came away with a few blisters, but nothing I couldn’t run through for 30 kilometers. Here’s hoping the next race isn’t a gratuitous mud-bath (though it *was* fun)...

You're totally smoking those old guys behind you.

Jeff, Monday, 19 April 2010 23:54 (sixteen years ago)

Ran just a couple of miles today. Trying to go fast so I can hit my desired 5k pace. 7:40 miles just ain't going to cut it.

Jeff, Monday, 19 April 2010 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

You're totally smoking those old guys behind you.

Thanks; this was about 10 seconds into the run. They probably passed me later. ;-)

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 20 April 2010 05:24 (sixteen years ago)

Knocked off 30 seconds. Would bet a lot that I stick at this point for a while, I don't think 'faster' is an option right now! Will settle for 'more comfortable' though. I got into my stride half way through and it felt great, but then I got complacent and speeded up and the gasping was back.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 11:52 (sixteen years ago)

Did a simulated 5k last night to prepare for my race on Saturday. So I decided to use the virtual partner feature of my Garmin and see if I could at least come in at 23 minutes. Ended up running it in 22:56, which would be a training PR for me. Wow, it sucked. Then jogged home, very slowly for 3 miles.

Jeff, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 12:06 (sixteen years ago)

Great work Jeff! I have been trying like hell to break 23 mins - my goal was to do it by the end of March, but I'm still on a PB of 23:08. I've done several now around 23:10 to 23:20 and while they're coming a little easier, they still hurt A LOT. Part of my problem is that I've always got one niggle or another, so I never seem to get into a groove with my running.

For 10K I'm still on 49.03. I need to have a crack at beating that soon.

Just catching up on the thread - there's some cool stuff on 'soft' training goals - I partly wish I was like that, but as you can see, I'm a hard numbers sort of bloke.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 12:46 (sixteen years ago)

ugh went out to finish 10k last night and just blew up only 2k into it- had to turn and walk home.

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 12:59 (sixteen years ago)

Wow 5k in 23 is amazing to me.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 13:25 (sixteen years ago)

I ran about 3.5 miles and walked 3.5. In between I did an intense upper body workout. This morning my chest and shoulders quaver when I raise my arms above chest height.

My battery was low on my phone so I couldn't use the gps so no idea of my time.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 13:28 (sixteen years ago)

The virtual training partner on my Garmin is really great for giving a quick visual indicator of your pacing. You just put in your desired time and distance and it gives you this screen:

http://youarearunner.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/stick-man.jpg?w=210&h=134

So you can always tell how far ahead or behind the stick man you are. If you are behind, the screen inverts to black with white text, so you know you got to kick it to catch up with him. Makes it easier to maintain a constant pace without a lot of speeding up and slowing down. It's those sudden surges that really tire me out and this helps me avoid them. Plus who wants to lose to a fraking stick man?

Jeff, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 13:57 (sixteen years ago)

Downside is that you are checking your watch constantly.

Jeff, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 13:58 (sixteen years ago)

Jeff, do you not do any sort of interval stuff?

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 14:18 (sixteen years ago)

Not really, but I should. I also want to do hills but the only one that is close to us is Cricket Hill at Montrose. I suppose I could run up and down it.

I'm pretty happy with my pace right. A year ago there was no way I thought I would ever break 23 min on a 5k (I was at 28 min then). I wonder if I keep consistently training can I get down to 22, 21, 20 even? I know I'm still not in the best shape I could be. I think I would be faster if I was about 7 pounds lighter.

Jeff, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 14:51 (sixteen years ago)

Remove some pesky limbs.

Jeff, you could run stairs! That totally sucks tho.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 14:54 (sixteen years ago)

Sometimes I walk the stairs in my building. 11th floor all the way up to 37. That destroys my legs though. I should do fewer floors at a time, but then I would be a failure.

Jeff, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

Holy shit. I feel like a hero when I walk the 6 floors to my office.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

I posted about shoes upthread but I feel I should make some kind of introductory post. I am just getting started with running; I've been doing it regularly (every couple of days) for two weeks. I am obviously way behind everyone else; I ran 2.7 miles in half an hour on Monday and that is my best so far. But I finally got my new shoes and so won't be running in decrepit heavy leather Adidas anymore.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:29 (sixteen years ago)

this thread was more fun when i was the beginner trying to catch up with everyone else.

less so now that i'm looking over my shoulder at newercomers.

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:46 (sixteen years ago)

still fun for me, the least competitive person alive

yeah well how d'you think that makes me feel when YOU'RE CATCHIN UP

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

N/a that's a good start. Twice a week and you'll see that drop pretty quickly I bet. If that's what you want to do. Just staying at the same pace is good for fitness as well. And probably a lot more pleasant.

Like Dr. C I love the numbers. And it's the best way to constantly challenge myself.

I would love to be able to place in my age group. The best I've ever done is 4th, 25th overall in a very small 5k. It's hard because the 30 to 34 dudes are usually pretty fast here.

Jeff, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

I'm really only "competing" against myself, though it's interesting to see where other people are after a certain amount of time. My only real goal for now is to be able to run for half an hour without stopping to walk at all, but I'm not trying to do that by a certain time or anything.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

I think that's totally fine time considering you're brand new. And like Jeff said, it's certainly enough for cardio fitness.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

it'll take a while, but you'll get there. when you get there you can decide what you want to do next, if anything.
i guess i approach this the same way i approach most things: moderation is ok, but if you start to want more more more you will never have enough.
