I'm still thinking about that 50k/31mi "fun run" BBQ in a couple weeks, so may take it easy on Sunday.

have been eating progressively larger pigs each week, really getting into my stride now.

gluck- my running mate turned his ankle last night. am treating it as a valuable opportunity to gain time on him tbh.

two weeks til the 10k race, so i'm in good shape for that. still not convinced about the half marathon, but that'll come along soon enough without worrying about it too.

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Saturday, 17 April 2010 16:44 (sixteen years ago)

my friend came in second in a local 5k, i would try to beat him next year but his time was 19:30. maybe i can beat his wife at 22:33. *only* a 7:15/mile split. ;_;

harbl, Saturday, 17 April 2010 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

so i did a timed 5k myself today, was quite a bit slower than that. my excuse was i went mostly uphill. lol.

harbl, Saturday, 17 April 2010 17:37 (sixteen years ago)

I want to break 23 minutes in a 5k. I'll try next weekend.

Jeff, Saturday, 17 April 2010 17:48 (sixteen years ago)

i just want to go further, think im ready to bump 8 up to 10, not sure abt the route tho

Just read this as "likely with dog training collar on"... whoops!

Just ran two 8:30 miles in Vibrams. 30k race tomorrow. YES!

Third time around. Didn't stop because I got fed up with checking my watch to see when to stop running and start walking, and seemed to do ok - I think partly because it's so much cooler today. *Sort* of understand 'getting into your stride' now, it was sort of happening towards the end. 36 mins, or 34 if you knock off 2 mins waiting for lights to change.

More questions:

- Why do my hands swell up?
- Please reassure me that I don't have to jog on the spot at lights. I don't think I could take the whole thing that seriously. I'd rather take it as a wild card and just time the wait, to knock off my total time.
- Have any of you tried running to an ebook? I don't want to get into running to music just yet as I think then I couldn't do without it, but I'd quite like something to listen to.

ljubljana, Sunday, 18 April 2010 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

i don't jog at stoplights and i read somewhere it's bad to do but i don't remember why. i just stop my watch. i don't know about swollen hands. i think it's good to get used to running without listening to anything at all but that's just me.

harbl, Sunday, 18 April 2010 16:35 (sixteen years ago)

er, audiobook, I meant. Yes, I need to get a decent watch. Fossil watches weren't made for this.

ljubljana, Sunday, 18 April 2010 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

i usually don't worry about the time i spent at a stoplight, use a crappy timex watch. not sure what's going on with the hands. are you keeping them clenched in a fist or something? i find myself doing that sometimes.

I use stop lights as a well deserved rest. I just stop my garmin while I am waiting. It keeps track of overall time and active time.

Jeff, Sunday, 18 April 2010 17:27 (sixteen years ago)

Glad to hear you're cool about stoplights. No, I don't clench my hands. I found they swelled up on a couple of recent long walks as well. Maybe I should drink more water - I don't drink much.

ljubljana, Sunday, 18 April 2010 17:31 (sixteen years ago)

I think the swelling is perfectly normal. I know my feet swell while running.

Jeff, Sunday, 18 April 2010 17:37 (sixteen years ago)

I'm really tired of weather that is not 80 degrees or higher.

Jeff, Sunday, 18 April 2010 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

Arrived 5 minutes before the race, and didn't have time to apply Body Glide. Decided to cut my losses and run/walk the second half to avoid excessive chafing. Next time I'll be sure to arrive early. Ouch!

today's run: ~4.9 mi in ~42 minutes

prominent French anthropologist Didier Fassin (los blue jeans), Monday, 19 April 2010 00:48 (sixteen years ago)

that's quick!

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Monday, 19 April 2010 00:52 (sixteen years ago)

It's weird though, I have a hard time getting < 25 minutes in a 5k. Once I hit my groove I just zone out and keep going

prominent French anthropologist Didier Fassin (los blue jeans), Monday, 19 April 2010 00:53 (sixteen years ago)

and I can't sprint from a stop at all

prominent French anthropologist Didier Fassin (los blue jeans), Monday, 19 April 2010 00:54 (sixteen years ago)

my 5k times are better per mile than my 8k, but yeah not significantly or anything. i prefer to think it's because i have iron man stamina tbh.

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Monday, 19 April 2010 00:55 (sixteen years ago)

now, i'm just after immersing myself in the wonder of the ronaldinho thread and am wondering if either of those comments are on shaky ground.

best i go to bed, maybe

o

I can see what you are saying there, and reading it now it does look kind of o_O. I don't think either person intended anything other than "you look really focused and kinda desperate"

:) that ronaldinho thread would poison the most innocent mind

Well I'd rather do anything than work most days tbh

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Monday, 19 April 2010 11:28 (sixteen years ago)

No miles logged this weekend. I am a failure and embarrassment.

Jeff, Monday, 19 April 2010 12:41 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't log any miles either, but kilometers I did log (very lame joke sorry and it's not even friday..). Just over 7 km in 36 minutes. I had to take a two minute walk after 5.5 km though, that's what you get for starting and trying to maintain too high a tempo. (you know, when you think after about 20 minutes of running "hey, it's going very smoothly today". And then 5 minutes later it's like "wtf why am I panting like a horse?")

willem, Monday, 19 April 2010 13:03 (sixteen years ago)

wtf you ran as part of a panto horse?

my right knee refuses to let me run more than 25 miles a week, the bastard

ice cr?m, Monday, 19 April 2010 13:13 (sixteen years ago)

I ran 0 miles this weekend.

Don't you feel like a failure?

I can't wait till my marathon training starts. I think I may like group runs.

Jeff, Monday, 19 April 2010 15:35 (sixteen years ago)

I had a wonderful weekend in other ways. But my first run this week is probably going to be tough. Especially b/c this weekend I wore new shoes that scraped skin of my ankles.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Monday, 19 April 2010 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

getting enough protein makes a huge difference, i wish i knew that a long time ago. i mean i knew but not how much. i think i am gonna take like 2 minutes off my 5k time next time lol

harbl, Monday, 19 April 2010 21:19 (sixteen years ago)

really? how so?

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Monday, 19 April 2010 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

i just feel noticeably stronger, especially going uphill

harbl, Monday, 19 April 2010 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

i mean because i make a point of having protein powder right when i get home. i used to sometimes not eat anything for hours.

harbl, Monday, 19 April 2010 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

Here's a photo from my 30k race this weekend:

http://stagingimages20.brightroom.com/imgbkp03/64999/64999-002-005f.jpg

Note the water covering the entire trail –- it rained heavily the night before. My feet were soaked 10 seconds into the run and stayed that way the whole race. I came away with a few blisters, but nothing I couldn’t run through for 30 kilometers. Here’s hoping the next race isn’t a gratuitous mud-bath (though it *was* fun)...

You're totally smoking those old guys behind you.

Jeff, Monday, 19 April 2010 23:54 (sixteen years ago)

Ran just a couple of miles today. Trying to go fast so I can hit my desired 5k pace. 7:40 miles just ain't going to cut it.

Jeff, Monday, 19 April 2010 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

You're totally smoking those old guys behind you.

Thanks; this was about 10 seconds into the run. They probably passed me later. ;-)
