This GPS tracker app on my phone has really motivated me. It appeals to my competitive side.

I love my Garmin and wouldn't run without it. If I can't measure my runs, I have no idea how well I am doing or if I'm improving. I love comparing my pace, like say from November of last year to April of this year. Or seeing my average distance when the temp is below 60 degrees.

I wish I didn't hate wearing a heart rate monitor, I would love to run by heart rate zones.

Jeff, Thursday, 15 April 2010 11:09 (sixteen years ago)

I heard something on npr about people who run every wingle day for as long as possible. I forget what it's called. One guy they talked about ran every single day for decades.

i want to run only on wingle days

There's a couple fellas who've been running every day since the late '60s.

As long as the phone is at least one mile away.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Thursday, 15 April 2010 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

Jeff, did you upgrade your Garmin? If you did or if you do, I might like to buy your old one.

Also, can't you wear a wrist heart rate monitor?

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Thursday, 15 April 2010 14:28 (sixteen years ago)

I have not upgraded and don't plan any time soon. The 305 will get cheaper as the newer models come out. The 305 is $200 new bit I've seen them for much cheaper used or refurbs. If you don't want the heart rate monitor you could even go with the 205.

A wrist monitor may be nice, but I like the integration that the garmin across the chest one offers. I just hate wearing it. That's the only type garmin offers.

One of my favorite garmin features is the virtual training partner. Basically you enter two numbers, mileage, pace, or distance. Then it puts a little stick figure on the screen as you run and indicates if you are ahead or behind the guy based on the parameters you specify. I use this in races, just set it for a pr time and make sure I beat stick man.

Ron Hill is the most famous of the run-every-day crew; from his Wikipedia:

Hill has built a 'streak', in which he has not missed a day of running since December 1964, starting when he was becoming established as a world-class runner. Hill continues his streak today, though he now defines a 'run' somewhat loosely; he has established baseline criteria of only one mile 'run', at any pace. Nevertheless, Hill's streak is a benchmark that other such streaks are usually compared against. In his streak, Hill includes workouts after a car crash in 1993 when he broke his sternum, and after bunion surgery, after which he used a crutch for one mile (1.6 km) in 27 minutes the next day.

Me, I believe in rest days.

seandalai, Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:02 (sixteen years ago)

Hmm. Things to think about. I almost wish I hadn't discovered these apps for my phone so that I would have felt more justified in getting a Garmin.

xp - I sort of feel about running streaks as Amanda seems to feel about goals and competition. While the ritual and dedication seems appealing, it also seems kind of silly.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:06 (sixteen years ago)

I mean come on, who the fuck cares if you run every single day.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:07 (sixteen years ago)

ice cr?m, Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

With Ron Hill though, I think it's all part of him setting a record.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

Dude has a long history of other running records btw. ie:

In 1970, Hill became the first British runner to win the Boston Marathon, by a wide margin, shattering the course record by three minutes with a time of 2:10:30. In July, at the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, he became the first man ever to break the 2:10 barrier, clocking a world record time of 2:09:28.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:13 (sixteen years ago)

Somehow I respect 2:09:28 a hell of a lot more than forcing yourself to run everyday.

seandalai, Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:34 (sixteen years ago)

Much like I love goals, I love obsessions as well. More power to the daily runners.

I chafe on my inner upper thighs and GOD it burns. Body Glide is a wonder product. It prevents chafing and also soothes chafing that has already occured. http://www.bodyglide.com/

lol realized the embroidered tshirt i was wearing caused it

ice cr?m, Thursday, 15 April 2010 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

Lol, second run and totally forgot what time I started. So either I did exactly the same time as before or I knocked off 5 mins. I *think* I must have knocked of 5 mins because I was trying to walk a bit less, but who knows. Will find out next time I guess.

It's so hot already (DC) - that's going to be a massive problem for me. Even if I run before dawn, which would be tough for me, it's still going to be crazy humid. I don't take that well.

ljubljana, Friday, 16 April 2010 12:41 (sixteen years ago)

thanks for the Running Warehouse tip dudes. I went to the fancy shoe store in town, had them assess my running (I overpronate I guess) and tried out some shoes, then ordered sale shoes that cost half as much from RW, hopefully they'll work out.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 16 April 2010 12:47 (sixteen years ago)

Second 30k of the spring in two days. I'm really pumped. Haven't felt this good going into a race all year. But... I'm still thinking about that 50k/31mi "fun run" in a couple weeks, so may take it easy on Sunday.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 16 April 2010 14:41 (sixteen years ago)

imo people that run 50k for 'fun' are no better than millionaires taking their yachts down to poor villages and having BBQ's in front of the starving natives 'for fun'.

disgusting savages.

two weeks til the 10k race, so i'm in good shape for that. still not convinced about the half marathon, but that'll come along soon enough without worrying about it too.

just darraghmac tbh (darraghmac), Saturday, 17 April 2010 16:44 (sixteen years ago)

my friend came in second in a local 5k, i would try to beat him next year but his time was 19:30. maybe i can beat his wife at 22:33. *only* a 7:15/mile split. ;_;

harbl, Saturday, 17 April 2010 17:35 (sixteen years ago)

so i did a timed 5k myself today, was quite a bit slower than that. my excuse was i went mostly uphill. lol.

harbl, Saturday, 17 April 2010 17:37 (sixteen years ago)

I want to break 23 minutes in a 5k. I'll try next weekend.

Jeff, Saturday, 17 April 2010 17:48 (sixteen years ago)

i just want to go further, think im ready to bump 8 up to 10, not sure abt the route tho
