Actually, it is not unreasonable for posters to request that their display names not be used by other posters. I would strongly recommend changing it.

I totally respect and understand that; my main point is really that posters do have a say as to what happens with their display names, regardless of whether they are pseudonyms or not. It's not forbidden to do it but you really do have to change it if the poster whose name you're co-opting asks you to.

xp: well zvookster, it's nice to know that you don't think that objection is particularly reasonable; that doesn't change the fact that it is, actually, reasonable, and something that at least one mod is willing to enforce

this all brings me back to when we were allowed to change display names again and i got yellowcarded for changing mine to Geir Hongro

don't sweat it, zvook, wouldn't have asked you to change it (although the strained chips ahoy pun was almost in unfinest territory imo), just saying that a lot of times people's real last names kind of become 'fair game' on the board without them ever posting it/under it or encouraging people to refer to them by it.

i'm kinda serious? i know it sounds stupid but it doesn't seem like a totally unreasonable request, whatever my reason is for asking for a change.

That was more "dismissive" than "aggie" because I think the point is pretty obvious; you are taking something that is used to represent one poster and using it to represent yourself. If both parties are okay with that, there's no conflict. If the person commonly known by that name has a problem with it, the person who borrowed it needs to change their name to something else. It really doesn't matter why the original person doesn't want their display name used and it doesn't matter why the person who took it is using it.

that's not obvious to me. ur using a play on it to represent part of a dn, with ur username after it. there's no chance of misrepresentation. another thing i can think of is googling ur username for ur ilx posts i guess, which is less convenient if it's used anywhere.

i really did not want to start a clusterfuck on this, i just made what i thought was a simple request. i tried to do it in a casual fashion but obviously i fucked up forever, i should be placed in ilx jail and not only that, i deserve the gasface according to you.
