Do those of you who are serious daily and/or long-distance runners worry about La L's point re injury? Or is it so beneficial to you in other ways (fun, general fitness, sense of freedom, goals to meet etc.) that the risk is worth it to you?

ljubljana, Thursday, 15 April 2010 01:46 (sixteen years ago)

u&k imo is to listen to yr body, do that and youll be fine, only bad injury ive had is when i went against my better judgement

ice cr?m, Thursday, 15 April 2010 01:54 (sixteen years ago)

fyi the popular belief that running fucks you up long term has been studied and proven not really that true, like it can but it doesnt have to

ice cr?m, Thursday, 15 April 2010 01:56 (sixteen years ago)

I realise it's a risk and not a certainty or anything like that, and risk can be managed. But I guess the risk goes up with really intensive running - just wondering how you weigh it. You obviously get immense benefits from it so I can see why it's worth weighing!

ljubljana, Thursday, 15 April 2010 02:11 (sixteen years ago)

I listen to my body and it tends to work out well for me. If I need a rest day, or want to go longer or shorter, or faster or slower, than planned, then I go for it. Training plans are meant to be flexible depending on one's specific needs.

I don't worry about injury too much. Once I start running, most pains go away. I'll take a day off when if it is a very specific pain that alters my gait. Or the weather is bad, because I hate the cold.

I also ignore the 10% rule, that you should never increase your mileage by more than 10% every week.

Jeff, Thursday, 15 April 2010 03:37 (sixteen years ago)

jeff otm ive been increasing my milage by 20% every week and now i run 500 million miles a week and its great

ice cr?m, Thursday, 15 April 2010 03:40 (sixteen years ago)

i may be a little more wary because i have had a bad experience with hurting my knees doing yoga. yes, yoga. (this was like 10-12 years ago and it was pretty much my first experience with regular exercise, aside from dancing/bike riding.) there was a point where i was having trouble walking up stairs. i mean, fuck that. fuck not being able to walk up stairs in your mid 20s. i never went to a doctor because i was uninsured. eventually i became terrified of finding myself in a situation where i needed medical help but couldn't afford it.

i know running doesn't *have to* be an injurious sport, but i - personally - don't feel like anything is worth risking further knee trouble for me. i want to make sure i have enough physical and cardiovascular strength to support me now and in the future. i'm getting there, but i see absolutely no reason to rush things. i'm nearly 35: equidistant from both 20 and 50 in opposite directions. scary eh?

on the positive side, though, i have had very little knee trouble since i began running with proper shoes. i just don't push myself to reach someone else's goals. pardon my tmi.

by "physical" i meant "muscular" sorry

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 April 2010 04:16 (sixteen years ago)

I think you're OTM, but the problem for me is that it's my own goals that I rush toward. Tonight I was concerned b/c I wanted to run a long, long ways, but I was really sore from Monday, but I ran despite my ankles buckling a bit. I tend to get impatient and try to do things all at once, I guess.

Tonight's run sucked. 3.12 miles, 34.5 minutes. Decent distance and time, but it was agonizing, not just because of the soreness.

This GPS tracker app on my phone has really motivated me. It appeals to my competitive side.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Thursday, 15 April 2010 04:21 (sixteen years ago)

Work already interfering with this. Still working at past midnight, got to be an hour from home at 9am tomorrow, work dinner tomorrow night. Will have to try and do 2nd run in a loop to/from work tomorrow I think, then shower at work, then dinner. Will either glow at dinner, or fall asleep. Or groan.

ljubljana, Thursday, 15 April 2010 04:28 (sixteen years ago)

My only goal for even starting has always been "I want to run for 30 min without stopping" and I'm pretty much there. It took me like 8 months! I guess maybe I should set a new goal, but I'm waiting for it to make itself apparent to me. There's no joy for me in reaching the goal of "10 min mile" or "[whatever a good time is on a 5K]" I really don't care about these popular measuring points or comparing myself to other people's success reaching those points.

I guess I have a sort of oppositional hate to this sort of measured competition. Usually when someone challenges me to something, I just say (to myself) "You want to win? There you go, you win. Leave me out of this. I'll be over here doing my own thing as well as I can." Maybe I'm unambitious, but I don't really care to be ambitious about something like this. I want to work on other things.

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 April 2010 04:37 (sixteen years ago)

That doesn't mean that I care that most other people are that way (competitive, enjoy measuring), just that I am not like that and cannot (apparently) be convinced to change.

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 April 2010 04:38 (sixteen years ago)

yeah whatever to competitiveness, but i will say this: if you dont continue to push yrself a lil bit each time your workout will be of declining utility

ice cr?m, Thursday, 15 April 2010 04:46 (sixteen years ago)

ok. i'll accept that. thanks.

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 April 2010 04:48 (sixteen years ago)

i push myself a little bit, just not much and not to any particular end. i do enjoy knowing that my old "long" route is my new "short" route. that i can almost outrun my dog. that i made it through a chicago winter without quitting.

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 April 2010 04:49 (sixteen years ago)

I think I will need goals but very small unthreatening ones and not ones that would totally change my lifestyle. And for me only, not in competition with others.

ljubljana, Thursday, 15 April 2010 04:59 (sixteen years ago)

Someone has probably already said this, but running every day is fine just as long as you build up to it slowly. I think most injuries happen when you introduce sudden changes e.g. big increases in frequency, mileage or intensity, changes in your stride or in your form, moving from soft surfaces to pavement or from flat to steep, stuff like that. If you can let your body adapt slowly, you'll be okay.

This GPS tracker app on my phone has really motivated me. It appeals to my competitive side.

I love my Garmin and wouldn't run without it. If I can't measure my runs, I have no idea how well I am doing or if I'm improving. I love comparing my pace, like say from November of last year to April of this year. Or seeing my average distance when the temp is below 60 degrees.

I wish I didn't hate wearing a heart rate monitor, I would love to run by heart rate zones.

Jeff, Thursday, 15 April 2010 11:09 (sixteen years ago)

I heard something on npr about people who run every wingle day for as long as possible. I forget what it's called. One guy they talked about ran every single day for decades.

There's a couple fellas who've been running every day since the late '60s.

As long as the phone is at least one mile away.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Thursday, 15 April 2010 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

Jeff, did you upgrade your Garmin? If you did or if you do, I might like to buy your old one.

Also, can't you wear a wrist heart rate monitor?

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Thursday, 15 April 2010 14:28 (sixteen years ago)

I have not upgraded and don't plan any time soon. The 305 will get cheaper as the newer models come out. The 305 is $200 new bit I've seen them for much cheaper used or refurbs. If you don't want the heart rate monitor you could even go with the 205.

A wrist monitor may be nice, but I like the integration that the garmin across the chest one offers. I just hate wearing it. That's the only type garmin offers.

One of my favorite garmin features is the virtual training partner. Basically you enter two numbers, mileage, pace, or distance. Then it puts a little stick figure on the screen as you run and indicates if you are ahead or behind the guy based on the parameters you specify. I use this in races, just set it for a pr time and make sure I beat stick man.

Ron Hill is the most famous of the run-every-day crew; from his Wikipedia:

Hill has built a 'streak', in which he has not missed a day of running since December 1964, starting when he was becoming established as a world-class runner. Hill continues his streak today, though he now defines a 'run' somewhat loosely; he has established baseline criteria of only one mile 'run', at any pace. Nevertheless, Hill's streak is a benchmark that other such streaks are usually compared against. In his streak, Hill includes workouts after a car crash in 1993 when he broke his sternum, and after bunion surgery, after which he used a crutch for one mile (1.6 km) in 27 minutes the next day.

Me, I believe in rest days.

seandalai, Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:02 (sixteen years ago)

Hmm. Things to think about. I almost wish I hadn't discovered these apps for my phone so that I would have felt more justified in getting a Garmin.

xp - I sort of feel about running streaks as Amanda seems to feel about goals and competition. While the ritual and dedication seems appealing, it also seems kind of silly.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:06 (sixteen years ago)

I mean come on, who the fuck cares if you run every single day.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:07 (sixteen years ago)

ice cr?m, Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

With Ron Hill though, I think it's all part of him setting a record.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

Dude has a long history of other running records btw. ie:

In 1970, Hill became the first British runner to win the Boston Marathon, by a wide margin, shattering the course record by three minutes with a time of 2:10:30. In July, at the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, he became the first man ever to break the 2:10 barrier, clocking a world record time of 2:09:28.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:13 (sixteen years ago)

Somehow I respect 2:09:28 a hell of a lot more than forcing yourself to run everyday.

seandalai, Thursday, 15 April 2010 15:34 (sixteen years ago)

Much like I love goals, I love obsessions as well. More power to the daily runners.
