I find intervals tedious because I have to pay too much attention to what I am doing. With distance runs I can zone out.

Jeff, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 03:04 (sixteen years ago)

However I should do them anyway, because I need to get faster. And there is only one hill in this city that o know of.

Jeff, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 03:05 (sixteen years ago)

yeah this is the advice i'm getting form all sides but no such person available unfortunately, just a dude 50 miles away whose times (which he texts) are frankly killing me atm.

let him come over to your place, running. then you'll be fine ;)

Motivating thread this. I'm not much of a contributor but as mentioned upthread started about a month ago. Since two weeks there's more regularity in my excercise: 2 -3 times a week. First week was 8 minutes run, 2 minutes walk for a 6 km distance, but as I find that quite a frustrating scheme (though I see why it's needed if you haven't been running in a long time) I went the full distance in a single go by the second week. Just taking things very very easy to not overdo the running pace-wise. It's a great feeling when things start feeling to come together in a few weeks time. This week I ran with a friend who lives in a city with quite a lot of climbs/hills - awesome! As soon as I am running my regular 6 km comfortably in 30 mins I am going to start doing intervals.

With regards to running everyday/injuries - I think it's probably safe to take it easy when you pick up running (after a prolonged period of inactivity) and allow recuperation for a couple of days before you run again. So 2 - 3 times a week should be ok. If your stamina has picked up and your body's grown more accustomed to longer distances I think it should not be a problem to increase the frequency.

willem, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 08:19 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks for the frequency advice. Admittedly it's also hard to get out every morning, especially with some early work starts. I'm aiming for every other day. I'd better sign up for some other run once the 10K is over, or I predict I won't keep doing it. Very impressed with Darragh's July target!

ljubljana, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 11:29 (sixteen years ago)

hee the target is the easy part.

Re intervals: they're not fun but they work. I'm a fan of fartlek, which is kind of like freeform intervals - you alternate between slow and fast running, making up the session as you go along.

seandalai, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 12:32 (sixteen years ago)

have been advised that fartlek works, and that's more likely the way i'll go about it. i do play football (soccer) twice a week which involves a lot of random sprinting and constant movement, but i don't know if there's any real difference?

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 12:50 (sixteen years ago)

My beef with intervals is that I have a hell of a time starting back up after the rest time. It's just a bitch for me. Imna start tryin them out tho, see how I feel after a few sessions.

Aerosol, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 13:18 (sixteen years ago)

gonna try fartlek over long distances, run til i'm screwed then as soon again as i can, see where it takes me.

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

yes, i had to get the extremely serious looking older gent at work to repeat it a few times to me alright.

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 14:27 (sixteen years ago)

been running a bunch (abt 20miles) in the heat over these past two weeks

etrian odysseus (cozen), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 14:35 (sixteen years ago)

Thinking about casually doing a 50k training run in a few weeks. I know a guy who's doing 50k -- three laps around a 10.3 mile trail by the lake, basically. I may start with two laps, see how I feel...

O_o ban ilxor

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 14:58 (sixteen years ago)

Would take me at least six hours fwiw.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

ok, ban anyone that can run for six hours then.

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 15:11 (sixteen years ago)

I want to run a 50K next year at this time. Goals are great.

Jeff, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 15:33 (sixteen years ago)

I'm really happy for you guys but I am going to continue to rep for the slow, steady, not getting my knees replaced approach.

This has probably been discussed somewhere but are there such a thing as shoes that are OK for running that aren't $$$? I'm not doing anything crazy at this point, just a couple-few miles. My shoes are shit and falling apart and my legs have been sore. But I can't really spend like $150 on superfancy running sneakers right now. Is there anything between shitty sneakers and pro gear?

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

i spent €20 on a pair of filas, and i've not had any trouble at all running on footpaths/roads

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 15:59 (sixteen years ago)

I would go to a sporting goods store and try some on - that way you know what you're getting for $50-$60 or whatever. Also DSW. Just don't get fashion shoes and you should be ok. Mine are New Balance and I like them a lot, but they're nothing special.

Try http://runningwarehouse.com -- wide selection, great prices.

OK cool. My only experience with this was when Sarah went to the fancy running shoe store in Lincoln Square and they watched her run and recommended special shoes just for her.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

I would do that and then just not buy them. Then order the same model from running warehouse. Save $$$

Jeff, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

I have much love for running warehouse. Free 2 day shipping!

Jeff, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 16:10 (sixteen years ago)

Free returns, too.

Hi, I'm back! I've started running again. I am up to 4 miles @ ~10 min/mile.

Any advice about interval training?

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 17:49 (sixteen years ago)

There's no way shoes need to cost $150. You may have to find out by trial and error (or going into a shop for hit-and-miss gait analysis) whether shoes with more or less support and cushioning suit you. I wear Adidas Adizero Tempos as a general training shoe, which cost £50 or so in the UK, but they might be too light for some people. I've previously tried superexpensive (which usually means superheavy and supercushioned) shoes like the Asics Kayano - they completely crippled me.

seandalai, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

I currently have Adidas Adizero Rides. They are of the more cushioned variety. I like them pretty good. I think I'm a heavier runner with a harder footfall so I appreciate that. Can't do the minimal or low cushion shoes.

Since I got my orthotics back today, I'm getting new shoes tonight! I'm going to try lots of brands on.

Jeff, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i have some standard issue asics that were on sale for like €25, they do me pretty good. calf is killing me, could do w/ some deep heat tbh.

plax (ico), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

huh runners wearhouse has the adidas adizero bostons for $60

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 19:07 (sixteen years ago)

ive never done this but it seems like if youre really interested in getting the perfect fit go to a fancy running store like http://jackrabbitsports.com in new york - as a wholesome gesture of appreciation bite the bullet and buy the $$ shoe - then when you need to reup find the same model discounted online

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 19:11 (sixteen years ago)

I'm still using the same running shoes I in August, 2005. Reebok something.

fabulous mussels (Jesse), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

I ended up getting a pair of Brooks Defyance 2. Despite the incredibly stupid spelling, I like them so far. Went for a quick run around the block. This is the 5th day in a row I've ran and my legs are sore, so probably can't tell how great they are yet. Can't wait to take them out this weekend to give them a true test.

Jeff, Thursday, 15 April 2010 01:30 (sixteen years ago)

Do those of you who are serious daily and/or long-distance runners worry about La L's point re injury? Or is it so beneficial to you in other ways (fun, general fitness, sense of freedom, goals to meet etc.) that the risk is worth it to you?

ljubljana, Thursday, 15 April 2010 01:46 (sixteen years ago)

u&k imo is to listen to yr body, do that and youll be fine, only bad injury ive had is when i went against my better judgement

ice cr?m, Thursday, 15 April 2010 01:54 (sixteen years ago)

fyi the popular belief that running fucks you up long term has been studied and proven not really that true, like it can but it doesnt have to

ice cr?m, Thursday, 15 April 2010 01:56 (sixteen years ago)

I realise it's a risk and not a certainty or anything like that, and risk can be managed. But I guess the risk goes up with really intensive running - just wondering how you weigh it. You obviously get immense benefits from it so I can see why it's worth weighing!

ljubljana, Thursday, 15 April 2010 02:11 (sixteen years ago)

I listen to my body and it tends to work out well for me. If I need a rest day, or want to go longer or shorter, or faster or slower, than planned, then I go for it. Training plans are meant to be flexible depending on one's specific needs.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 15 April 2010 02:16 (sixteen years ago)

I don't worry about injury too much. Once I start running, most pains go away. I'll take a day off when if it is a very specific pain that alters my gait. Or the weather is bad, because I hate the cold.

I also ignore the 10% rule, that you should never increase your mileage by more than 10% every week.

Jeff, Thursday, 15 April 2010 03:37 (sixteen years ago)

jeff otm ive been increasing my milage by 20% every week and now i run 500 million miles a week and its great

ice cr?m, Thursday, 15 April 2010 03:40 (sixteen years ago)

i may be a little more wary because i have had a bad experience with hurting my knees doing yoga. yes, yoga. (this was like 10-12 years ago and it was pretty much my first experience with regular exercise, aside from dancing/bike riding.) there was a point where i was having trouble walking up stairs. i mean, fuck that. fuck not being able to walk up stairs in your mid 20s. i never went to a doctor because i was uninsured. eventually i became terrified of finding myself in a situation where i needed medical help but couldn't afford it.

i know running doesn't *have to* be an injurious sport, but i - personally - don't feel like anything is worth risking further knee trouble for me. i want to make sure i have enough physical and cardiovascular strength to support me now and in the future. i'm getting there, but i see absolutely no reason to rush things. i'm nearly 35: equidistant from both 20 and 50 in opposite directions. scary eh?

on the positive side, though, i have had very little knee trouble since i began running with proper shoes. i just don't push myself to reach someone else's goals. pardon my tmi.

by "physical" i meant "muscular" sorry

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 April 2010 04:16 (sixteen years ago)

I think you're OTM, but the problem for me is that it's my own goals that I rush toward. Tonight I was concerned b/c I wanted to run a long, long ways, but I was really sore from Monday, but I ran despite my ankles buckling a bit. I tend to get impatient and try to do things all at once, I guess.

Tonight's run sucked. 3.12 miles, 34.5 minutes. Decent distance and time, but it was agonizing, not just because of the soreness.
