I guess in the past there has never been great differentiation between the 13" and the 15" so they're finally widening the gap

13" macbook pro replaced the upper half of the ibook line, so it makes sense that it is relatively underspecced

i still maintain that the 12" PB should have made it to the intel era, although I guess they were thinking iPad by then. if they made it now it would be very much a niche, although nerds like me would be down.

I've seen prices as low as £329 mentioned but I'm thinking around £400 for the lowest model. might go for £389 for that sub-£400 tagline

I was waiting for the update, wanted to get 13" but bummed there's no processor update. Figuring now I'd be happier with the 15" for size and for the no-glare/hi-res screen, so much more appropriate for doing design work away from the desk than the 13"...but was also thinking about using it for DJing in which case the little 13" would've been better just on size alone.

going by current $=£ conversion the 13"mcbook pro starting price should be around £750. give them a bit of leeway and i would think £850 would be reasonable not £999.

btw does anyone know if iPad can play movies you have obtained uh elesewhere

i guess that was their goal, but i would like to see a small ultraportable laptop now the ipad exists for people who care about weight. 12" pb had a footprint that was quite a lot smaller than the air.

gbx: i think if quicktime on your mac will play them then so will ipad (assuming you aren't dependent on perian or whatever on your mac)

caek that's true but volumewise the air is much much smaller than the pb, and actually the 13" mbp is slimmer by 2 cubic inches than the old 2"

but yeah apple hasn't made anything with as small a footprint as the 12" since the intel era

historically 1$ ~= 1£ in apple land if you buy retail, and they don't make huge efforts to keep up with movements in the currency market

dyao, yeah, if you asked me if I wanted an air or a 12" pb, i would take the air! i would just like to see the air be smaller, even it that made it 1/100th inch thicker, which seems to be their marketing's main concern.

yeah the inability to drag and drop vids to ipod and ipad's is the worst thing ever (tho somewhat understandable, I wish they'd at least accept more codecs/filetypes)

the lack of a universal file storage area/library sucks though (and would probably be too computer-like for apple's current design philosophy wrt iphone and ipad)

yeah, i might be imagining it, but i thought i'd heard something about an api being exposed in 4.0 to make this easier for non-apple devs. as you say though, apple's own apps suck in this regard.

there's something about file management coming but i can't remember how it works

you have to buy all your files from itunes store

and then sync them while holding down the home button through safari

you also have to be doing a handstand (the ipad orientation sensor will keep you honest)

btw if you're in school iirc you can become a student developer through apple's developer connection for $100. that entitles you to a one-time 20% discount on any purchase of a mac, which would bring the $2200 15" mbp to around $1860.

lol after doing the math you save around $140 over the education store discount, at least for the top of the line 15". I assume the savings get smaller the further down you move down the apple product line.

iPad works fine for watching random movies. If you want to make it work well, I'd recommend importing the file into iTunes (although not having iTunes do any transcoding) and adding title and descriptions. I threw a couple ripped dvds on there and they work great.

File syncing to the iPad kind of sucks, or at least it would for document management of anything you'll edit.

I've been just streaming my DivX and other random file formats through Air Video (from my laptop). Real nice interface and quality of video.
