it takes two to make eye contact ;)

an outlet to express the dark invocations of (La Lechera), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:40 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I know, I started to wonder if it was me confronting everyone. ARE YOU LOOKING AT ME? ARE YOU???

ljubljana, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:48 (sixteen years ago)

Yay ljubljana, how long have you got before your 10k?

it was sometimes really hard to run as slowly as I needed to to keep my breath. I felt like I was trying to hover on the spot mid-stride to slow down or else do little baby steps.

I think you just need to go with the flow and try not to compromise your natural rhythm too much, cos there's maybe a risk of injury if you force your stride to do something weird.

got hungry. What do you eat before an early morning run? I didn't want to eat a lot so I had had a handful of almonds.

Cereal with soya milk for me, or maybe toast with jam.

A bit weirded out by what felt like lots of eye contact from people. Prob imagining it but felt like a dork.

Sunglasses! Except I always get fogged up the whole time.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:49 (sixteen years ago)

10k on 25 April, ahem...
Knee hurts a tiny bit :-(

ljubljana, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:56 (sixteen years ago)

How long do you leave between toast/cereal and the run?

ljubljana, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:58 (sixteen years ago)

About 30 mins? Just cos it takes me that long to find my running stuff and get out of the door.

If your knee's a bit iffy, I'd probably have a couple of ibuprofen and rest it for a day or two. If it's alright after that, you should be able to get in another 3 or 4 runs before your 10k and they'll definitely get easier each time if you recover fully in between. You'll be fine!

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 13:09 (sixteen years ago)

Signed up for the 10K despite sensible advice on here not to (selectively listened to ilxor).

Nice work. You'll be fine. We had a 10k in Austin last weekend, I swung by the packet pick-up area the day before (my daughter ran the kids' 1 mile) and there were *hundreds* of folks signing up to run the day before. Figure a good handful of these are first-time runners and most of them will make it through the race just fine. Run, walk, run... all the way to the finish.

- got hungry. What do you eat before an early morning run? I didn't want to eat a lot so I had had a handful of almonds.

A few ideas: trail mix bar (I like Kashi brand), oatmeal, banana, bagel, English muffin, toast. Something with a couple hundred calories, not too heavy, mostly carbs or plant-based. Most will advise that you skip the dairy/protein until afterward.

How long do you leave between toast/cereal and the run?

Experiment a bit, then do what works best for you. I can head out immediately after any of the foods above... your mileage may vary.

Something with a couple hundred calories

Rather, something with *UP TO* a couple hundred calories. A banana or a slice of bread may have less. That's fine. Just eat enough so that you're not starving mid-run... something to hold you over until you can eat a proper breakfast.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 13:15 (sixteen years ago)

I just run with my eyes down or to the side to avoid eye contact. I'll go by dozens if not more runners on a nice day, so that is alot of avoidance.

If I run in the morning I'll usually just eat half a bagel or a toaster waffle. Othertimes just a banana. For bar form food I like the Clif Mojo bars. I only eat half at at time though.

Jeff, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 13:30 (sixteen years ago)

okay, so i'm just starting running again after two years off. i've lost 20 lbs doing circuit and dieting, and i'm in the process of doing c25k, already on the 5th or 6th week. anyway... i've got chafing issues. fellas, what kind of underwear do you recommend? i will NOT be freeballing. what works and is (relatively) inexpensive. cotton briefs/boxers/boxerbriefs are all no-go.

ampersand (remy bean), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 13:35 (sixteen years ago)

I just wear standard running shorts that come with a sewn-in liner thing. They're all made of fabric that wicks the sweat away, so chafing isn't generally a problem unless the conditions are super-sweaty. Big blobs of vaseline are really good though for stopping any rubbing.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 13:40 (sixteen years ago)

I wear the shorts with built in lining too. Specifically under armour brand. No chaffing issues.

Body glide is your friend too.

I only have chaffing issues in one place and I use bandaids to cover those up. Wow it hurts when I forget.

B-)

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 13:54 (sixteen years ago)

i've got chafing issues. fellas, what kind of underwear do you recommend?

i got a pair of boy-armour type things because chafing was an issue, they do the trick perfectly. don't know brand but will post later.

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:18 (sixteen years ago)

boy-armour jesus my typing really is gone to shite

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

shorts with built-in lining, plus selective application of sudocrem

p-dog, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 16:24 (sixteen years ago)

would it be shameles of me to post this here?

if so, feel free to ignore it :)

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

lol you chose the default picture I see! I also have one of those, for my charity 10k in May. can we take it that we both gave each other the exact same sponsorship amount and so cancelled each other out? :)

p-dog, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

heh not sure that the charities benefit from that, but certianly as an accounting measure it balances.

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

gonna try jogging again this weekend; the pain in the ankle is mostly gone.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

appear to have stalled at 5k as maximum non-stop distance (managed nearly 8k but that was only once, about a fortnight ago and no sign of a repetition) and now my times for that have stopped improving (hovering around the 29 min mark)

anyone else got any experience of hitting a 'wall' in either distance or pace? any tips for overcoming it?

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:50 (sixteen years ago)

10k goes ahead in about two weeks, and I don't think it's beyond me to do it non stop in < 1 hr or less, but that was based on progress up to the beginning of april, now i'm not so sure.

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:51 (sixteen years ago)

10k in 1 hour would be pretty amazing I think given you're new to this? I know nowt though. It can't be as straightforward as just 2 x 5k.

ljubljana, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:58 (sixteen years ago)

ran 6 miles in 60 mins last week but had to stop 3/4 times- i'd rather cruise along at a constant pace if i can manage it. it's more dignified

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 01:59 (sixteen years ago)

2x 5k keeping pace at 30 mins would be just fine by me tbh!

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:00 (sixteen years ago)

Co-worker claims it's tantamount to asking for injury to run every day. T/F?

do hills and intervals

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:02 (sixteen years ago)

ugh to both but if that's yr advice then thanks and will do my best.

10k course- lots of hills so probably for the best anyway

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:03 (sixteen years ago)

i'm not running every day, at least 2 days off in the week, with another two days being other-than-running sports.

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:04 (sixteen years ago)

you can improve on yr own just jogging along, but if you want to improve faster intervals, hill training etc is the way to go - from a psychological perspective ime running w/people who are a little better than you can help break down some barriers - a race likely fills the same niche just as long as yr not tooo ambitious

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:07 (sixteen years ago)

Co-worker claims it's tantamount to asking for injury to run every day. T/F?

Absolutely false.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:16 (sixteen years ago)

eh everyone is different and there are a lot of variables, regular rest and recuperation is imo not a bad idea

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:21 (sixteen years ago)

from a psychological perspective ime running w/people who are a little better than you can help break down some barriers

yeah this is the advice i'm getting form all sides but no such person available unfortunately, just a dude 50 miles away whose times (which he texts) are frankly killing me atm.

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:22 (sixteen years ago)

dont know if youre the type to do this, im certainly not, but joining a running club/group could do the trick - i see these motherfuckers all over the place

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:25 (sixteen years ago)

also i may have said this before but im a little baffled by the general h8red for intervals here - i find them easier than distance running as theyre more exciting and you get to take breaks

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:26 (sixteen years ago)

i will read up on intervals, but certainly the 'breaks' sounds promising. i just figured it was sprinting to fuck in set patterns.

nah i'm not joing a running club

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:29 (sixteen years ago)

sprint > walk > sprint > walk = intervals, nice

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:31 (sixteen years ago)

heh that's pretty much how my attempt at 6m/10k went, but not how it was planned

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 02:34 (sixteen years ago)

I find intervals tedious because I have to pay too much attention to what I am doing. With distance runs I can zone out.

Jeff, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 03:04 (sixteen years ago)

However I should do them anyway, because I need to get faster. And there is only one hill in this city that o know of.

Jeff, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 03:05 (sixteen years ago)

yeah this is the advice i'm getting form all sides but no such person available unfortunately, just a dude 50 miles away whose times (which he texts) are frankly killing me atm.

let him come over to your place, running. then you'll be fine ;)

Motivating thread this. I'm not much of a contributor but as mentioned upthread started about a month ago. Since two weeks there's more regularity in my excercise: 2 -3 times a week. First week was 8 minutes run, 2 minutes walk for a 6 km distance, but as I find that quite a frustrating scheme (though I see why it's needed if you haven't been running in a long time) I went the full distance in a single go by the second week. Just taking things very very easy to not overdo the running pace-wise. It's a great feeling when things start feeling to come together in a few weeks time. This week I ran with a friend who lives in a city with quite a lot of climbs/hills - awesome! As soon as I am running my regular 6 km comfortably in 30 mins I am going to start doing intervals.

With regards to running everyday/injuries - I think it's probably safe to take it easy when you pick up running (after a prolonged period of inactivity) and allow recuperation for a couple of days before you run again. So 2 - 3 times a week should be ok. If your stamina has picked up and your body's grown more accustomed to longer distances I think it should not be a problem to increase the frequency.

willem, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 08:19 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks for the frequency advice. Admittedly it's also hard to get out every morning, especially with some early work starts. I'm aiming for every other day. I'd better sign up for some other run once the 10K is over, or I predict I won't keep doing it. Very impressed with Darragh's July target!

ljubljana, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 11:29 (sixteen years ago)

hee the target is the easy part.

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 11:33 (sixteen years ago)

Re intervals: they're not fun but they work. I'm a fan of fartlek, which is kind of like freeform intervals - you alternate between slow and fast running, making up the session as you go along.

seandalai, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 12:32 (sixteen years ago)

have been advised that fartlek works, and that's more likely the way i'll go about it. i do play football (soccer) twice a week which involves a lot of random sprinting and constant movement, but i don't know if there's any real difference?

Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 April 2010 12:50 (sixteen years ago)

My beef with intervals is that I have a hell of a time starting back up after the rest time. It's just a bitch for me. Imna start tryin them out tho, see how I feel after a few sessions.

Aerosol, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 13:18 (sixteen years ago)

gonna try fartlek over long distances, run til i'm screwed then as soon again as i can, see where it takes me.
