How touching.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:44 (twenty years ago)

"marathon snowballing"? How would that work? I'm reminded of "pooping back and forth forever."

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:45 (twenty years ago)

I just came in here to post this picture: http://www.cordair.com/bokor/images/beginnings/beginnings.jpg

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:47 (twenty years ago)

OMG

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I need a cigarette.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Is that Ayn fucking Rand?

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:53 (twenty years ago)

It is! It is Ayn Rand! gah. Jenny, you just blew my mind.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Jeff is OT fucking M.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:56 (twenty years ago)

The guy in the Egyptian headdress looks like James Tolkan.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 22:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I thought that was a topless nun.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:04 (twenty years ago)

Also... quite a gap there between Greek philosophers and Ayn Rand. No Da Vinci? No Freud? Ayn fucking Rand was the only thinker that mattered in 2000 years?

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:08 (twenty years ago)

I agree with Jesse and with Jeff as well. K3nan, there are ways of being attracted to people other than that sort of "OMG YOU ARE SO HOTT I CANNOT STOP LOOKING AT YOU OMGOMGOMGOMOMG" bullshit.

More later. Movie was good, more movie to come!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 23:58 (twenty years ago)

there are ways of being attracted to people other than that sort of "OMG YOU ARE SO HOTT I CANNOT STOP LOOKING AT YOU OMGOMGOMGOMOMG" bullshit

My goodness. Did I ever say such a thing? Not being able to stop looking at someone wears off pretty quick, I've found. Are you implying that I do not forge relationships based on how interesting and compatible the other person seems? That's quite insulting. I was just wondering how you plan to take physical attractiveness out of the equation altogether. I'm not sure that's possible, or wise.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:07 (twenty years ago)

And certainly there is more than one way to be attracted to someone. I can and have fallen very in love with excellent, admirable minds, which is also a good reason to bed down with someone for maybe a long while. But that's not what you said. You said finding someone attractive is not a good reason to find them attractive, and then went on about being so attracted to someone that you're somehow incapacitated, which I found difficult to parse. "Hot" is relative, sexy is relative, and "OMG YOU ARE SO HOTT I CANNOT STOP LOOKING AT YOU" can happen for any number of reasons, not just because the other person has balanced and proportioned features.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:14 (twenty years ago)

Why am I having to defend this? You people must really think I'm a lech.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Not at all related to the conversation at hand, I thought of a good cover song for the FFs -- "Hypocrite" by Lush. I can totally hear Sarah singing that song. In fact, that might actually BE Sarah singing that song.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Kenan you protest too much.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:53 (twenty years ago)

Hey, does anyone listen to this Deerhoof rock and roll combo?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 00:58 (twenty years ago)

I bet Nick does.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 01:04 (twenty years ago)

I don't.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 01:05 (twenty years ago)

Listen to that band, I mean. I saw them at Intonation last year and I was not moved to explore further. Not my thing.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 01:05 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard them, but my interest has been sparked. Just a small spark, though. If someone told me what their best album was and that it was really good I would probably listen to it.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 01:06 (twenty years ago)

K., I was exaggerating your position to make my point clearer. I didn't really think that of you. Also I was in a rush.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 02:27 (twenty years ago)

I was just wondering how you plan to take physical attractiveness out of the equation altogether. I'm not sure that's possible, or wise.

It's not totally out of the picture, I suppose, since I'd be unlikely to have sex with someone who I found very ugly. But the ideal for me is somewhere between "kinda cute" and "that'll do, I suppose".

If I find someone attractive for reasons other than being physically attractive, then that probably means I have made some sort of connection with them.

And -- I am being rushed out to dinner, sorry! -- my main point is that I don't want to be excited about someone, but rather I want to care about them. Excitement is about novelty, and care is about constancy, and novelty is a rush but constancy is empowering.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Others may disagree, though.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 02:36 (twenty years ago)

I do think it's important for a relationship to have a central spark to it, and this is often accomplished at the beginning of the relationship by physical attraction. I suppose it could be accomplished by other things, too -- but the point is, it needs to be there before the relationship can get off the ground at all.

jaymc at r's place, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 02:42 (twenty years ago)

jaymc is a wise man. Also, Laurel is hot.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 03:37 (twenty years ago)

I like Deerhoof.

Jeff. (Jeff), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 04:07 (twenty years ago)

So Crash SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

unclejessjess, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 04:22 (twenty years ago)

On the other hand, wow: http://www.silencethemusical.com/nyc/

unclejessjess, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 04:27 (twenty years ago)

Crash was your top secret plan?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 04:32 (twenty years ago)

Silence, the Musical

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 04:37 (twenty years ago)

Stranded Man Living at O'Hare

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 05:29 (twenty years ago)

Isn't there a guy who lived in the Paris airport for... a long long time? Or was that just a short story/movie/something?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 05:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes, there is. http://www.snopes.com/travel/airline/airport.asp

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 05:35 (twenty years ago)

Apparently they made a movie about him that I've never heard of, despite it starring Tom Hanks. It probably won a few Oscars as well.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 05:37 (twenty years ago)

It was called Terminal, and it sucked too.

unclejessjess, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 05:55 (twenty years ago)

I like Deerhoof.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 13:23 (twenty years ago)

bunny bunny bunny bunny bunny

pan-da pan-dapan-da pan-da pan panda

This is all I can really remember of Deerhoof. They were okay.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Someone lent me a Deerhoof CD once, and then I gave it back, and then they claimed I lost it. Or maybe I did lose it. I don't remember losing it, though, and I have never seen it again.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:46 (twenty years ago)

I just got Ethiopiques 8 - "Swinging Addis" and BOY! Woo! Some white-hot shit right there. I almost got my dancing fingers out on the train.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

I saw Terminal in a hotel room a few months ago. It was sucky, yeah, but it did feature Benny Golson as the macguffin, which warmed my heart.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

All of those Ethiopique discs are great. I think 7 is my favorite, or at least the one I've listened to the most, but 8 is also kick-rump.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I saw it in the theatre. In the fucking theatre. I went alone. To a theatre.

unclejessjess, Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:02 (twenty years ago)

I saw that horrible horrible horrible Tom Hanks movie too. He comes from an imaginary country. That's all you need to know -- it's one step from Mypos.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:02 (twenty years ago)

OK, here is what I thought of Crash, copied and pasted from my review elsewhere:

I just don't know where to begin, and I'm afraid to begin because I might never stop.

My biggest beef: The movie was set in what was apparently some parallel-universe LA where characters' lives were a non-stop series of events relating to race race race. This might actually have worked had the film makers not tried to make it realistic at the same time, but had chosen to go for a fantastical or magically-realistic premise. Had that been the case then it would have made sense that every character lives a day-to-day life that involves incidents, conversations, crimes, retaliations, car crashes etc all revolving around race.

Also, SPOILER ALERT, why did the police not come to arrest the Persian owner who shot the little girl while trying to shoot her dad, the locksmith? Is it because the cops were all busy fingering black women and burning cars in which they shot black men?

unclejessjess (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

I distinctly heard you say "jew"!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:04 (twenty years ago)

I should stop reading about/commenting on that rape case, since it's making me really really really really really really really really really angry.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Jew?
