Easy 3 miles last night in my Vibram FiveFingers. Love those "shoes" dearly.

so strange on how the times when i start out and i feel like i'm dogging it, i end up picking up my game half way through and feeling like i can run forever.
I’m totally ready for that 4 mile on Sunday btw, I did 4 last night with relative ease. Amazing how fast my endurance has picked up just from running regularly for a few weeks now
― various incomprehensible beefs (Aerosol), Friday, 9 April 2010 20:10 (sixteen years ago)
7k in 37 minutes = the furthest I've ever run!! boo ya. building up to first 10k in about 6 weeks.

9 miles and change today. Wonderful weather. Tried some Shot Bloks on my run. I like them better than gels.
― Jeff, Saturday, 10 April 2010 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

― Lamp, Saturday, 10 April 2010 21:25 (sixteen years ago)
I posted this upthread last month:
I carry straight water for anything around 4+ miles/45 minutes or longer. At 7-8 I start carrying a sports drink (I use Heed, which is like Gatorade et al., without all the processed crap and corn syrup). Around half-marathon distance or longer I will carry a drink that also has some protein in it (my choice is Perpetuem; similar to Heed, but with a 3:1 ratio of carbs to protein).
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 10 April 2010 21:28 (sixteen years ago)
I take along water for anything longer than about 8 miles or if it's ridic hot, and then I carry a few sachets of energy gel for anything further than 10 miles.

Can I run/walk a 10k with only 2 weeks to train? I'm thinking yes, yes? If I don't get ambitious or anything.
― ljubljana, Saturday, 10 April 2010 23:00 (sixteen years ago)
(as I posted upthread, have not run for abot 10 yrs and even back then never did more than 20 mins. Couple of weeks ago did 30 mins on treadmill, alternating 4 mins at 5.5 jog then 1 min at 3.5 walk, and was fine)
― ljubljana, Saturday, 10 April 2010 23:03 (sixteen years ago)
whats the point, you know, run to run; remain in joy
― ice cr?m, Saturday, 10 April 2010 23:08 (sixteen years ago)
yeah to do the 10k would be like that 30 min alternating times 3, plus you'd be on land which is different so imo wait for the next 10k
― harbl, Saturday, 10 April 2010 23:15 (sixteen years ago)
great that so many others are kinda starting out here too. not easy to read about the superilxors and their 10 miles all the time :)
really didn't feel great tonight, but my running partner for the upcoming races texted me with details of a 59 minute 10k and i dragged myself out for 5k. bleh.

I haven't been running a lot for very long. Really just got back into it last August. You can be me in 6 months! I'm still working on being super.
― Jeff, Saturday, 10 April 2010 23:55 (sixteen years ago)
Please note that there is a lot of baggage that comes along with being me. I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

You should totally do this. Just run/walk at your leisure, don't worry about time. You'll be able to finish, even if you walk as much as you run; who cares? Personal aside: I ran my first 10k on a week's training 5 years ago, and haven't looked back since.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Sunday, 11 April 2010 00:12 (sixteen years ago)
ugh i had the worst treadmill experience today. gonna try to forget it and do better on land tomorrow.

Did the 4 mile in 42:30! so stocked on finishing my first race and running the whole way! Awesome weather and a great morning

Just done about 5 miles with Emma's brother, who's training for a half marathon. Walked maybe a third of it, but it was really good, really enjoyed it.

My allergies are killing me too.
Ran 6 miles today. Didn't feel that great from my 9 yesterday, but I haven't had a weekend like this in awhile.
― Jeff, Sunday, 11 April 2010 23:13 (sixteen years ago)
My last two runs I've seen the Hi Guy out and about. Sure sign that it's spring time in Chicago.
― Jeff, Sunday, 11 April 2010 23:51 (sixteen years ago)
Did 2x8 miles this weekend in prospect park. Slight hamstring pain but ok. In terms of allergies: I sneeze 30 times per hour right now, seriously. Never done anything about it though.

Signed up for the 10K despite sensible advice on here not to (selectively listened to ilxor).
First ever run outside today: Just over 5K in 41 mins, trying to run 4 mins and walk one min, but with some extra walking from time to time.
Noticed...
- it was sometimes really hard to run as slowly as I needed to to keep my breath. I felt like I was trying to hover on the spot mid-stride to slow down or else do little baby steps. But I only felt that from time to time- got hungry. What do you eat before an early morning run? I didn't want to eat a lot so I had had a handful of almonds.- A bit weirded out by what felt like lots of eye contact from people. Prob imagining it but felt like a dork.- people have some awesome front yards- a kebab shop called Sacrificial Lamb

I know what you mean. Find listening to (or even just wearing) an ipod helps a lot with this for some reason.

it takes two to make eye contact ;)

Yay ljubljana, how long have you got before your 10k?
it was sometimes really hard to run as slowly as I needed to to keep my breath. I felt like I was trying to hover on the spot mid-stride to slow down or else do little baby steps.
I think you just need to go with the flow and try not to compromise your natural rhythm too much, cos there's maybe a risk of injury if you force your stride to do something weird.
got hungry. What do you eat before an early morning run? I didn't want to eat a lot so I had had a handful of almonds.
Cereal with soya milk for me, or maybe toast with jam.
A bit weirded out by what felt like lots of eye contact from people. Prob imagining it but felt like a dork.
Sunglasses! Except I always get fogged up the whole time.

10k on 25 April, ahem... Knee hurts a tiny bit :-(
― ljubljana, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:56 (sixteen years ago)
How long do you leave between toast/cereal and the run?
― ljubljana, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 12:58 (sixteen years ago)
About 30 mins? Just cos it takes me that long to find my running stuff and get out of the door.
If your knee's a bit iffy, I'd probably have a couple of ibuprofen and rest it for a day or two. If it's alright after that, you should be able to get in another 3 or 4 runs before your 10k and they'll definitely get easier each time if you recover fully in between. You'll be fine!
― Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 13:09 (sixteen years ago)
Nice work. You'll be fine. We had a 10k in Austin last weekend, I swung by the packet pick-up area the day before (my daughter ran the kids' 1 mile) and there were *hundreds* of folks signing up to run the day before. Figure a good handful of these are first-time runners and most of them will make it through the race just fine. Run, walk, run... all the way to the finish.
- got hungry. What do you eat before an early morning run? I didn't want to eat a lot so I had had a handful of almonds.
A few ideas: trail mix bar (I like Kashi brand), oatmeal, banana, bagel, English muffin, toast. Something with a couple hundred calories, not too heavy, mostly carbs or plant-based. Most will advise that you skip the dairy/protein until afterward.
Experiment a bit, then do what works best for you. I can head out immediately after any of the foods above... your mileage may vary.

Something with a couple hundred calories
Rather, something with *UP TO* a couple hundred calories. A banana or a slice of bread may have less. That's fine. Just eat enough so that you're not starving mid-run... something to hold you over until you can eat a proper breakfast.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 13 April 2010 13:15 (sixteen years ago)
I just run with my eyes down or to the side to avoid eye contact. I'll go by dozens if not more runners on a nice day, so that is alot of avoidance.
If I run in the morning I'll usually just eat half a bagel or a toaster waffle. Othertimes just a banana. For bar form food I like the Clif Mojo bars. I only eat half at at time though.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 13 April 2010 13:30 (sixteen years ago)
okay, so i'm just starting running again after two years off. i've lost 20 lbs doing circuit and dieting, and i'm in the process of doing c25k, already on the 5th or 6th week. anyway... i've got chafing issues. fellas, what kind of underwear do you recommend? i will NOT be freeballing. what works and is (relatively) inexpensive. cotton briefs/boxers/boxerbriefs are all no-go.
