laire and locke are the only ones i cant get the missing true love angle on at all

alt locke makes sense if you consider the missing piece in alt universe to be life fulfillment. which, for most of the characters, does boil down to true love. but for locke, life fulfillment meant going to the island and discovering himself/his purpose.

So much wasted potential this season, when I'm just imagining how awesome this season could've been if they had gone with this sooner.

Nah, they had to drag that stuff out to make this ep seem like the pivotal turning point with the timelines. There's no point in a mystery if you're going to answer it the following week.

Really liked this episode, mostly because it was the only one, in the entire series, when I really didn't have a fucking clue what was going to happen. The Alpert one was terrific but didn't really tell us anything we hadn't already guessed.

re: Eloise... I think setting the bomb off was her own long con, possibly executed with Widmore. For the (as noted above) selfish reasons of having Daniel back, plus what seems like her whole original family. This explains why she pushed Daniel so hard as a kid, she saw him die in '77 and decided to change things. Also explains wy she was so vicious to Desmond this ep, cause she wants to keep things like they are in the alt.

I like this theory, and it makes sense. But Eloise and Widmore have been manipulating Desmond all along and we still don't know to what purpose. There could be a (very) long con involving those three, Faraday and possibly Miles and Lapidus too.

Widmore in this ep said he needed to know that Desmond could withstand that level of electromagnetism - what is there left on the Island that could still be giving that off? Whatever it is he's going to have to walk right into it for some very important reason, probably in the final ep.

If there is a long con, there are still big gaps in how the whole thing would work, specifically the point at which Ellie and Widmore start giving a shit about Desmond.

We know that, knowing what was going to happen already, they pushed Desmond to go to the Island. We know that Desmond's failure to push buttons causes 815 to crash in the first place, which leads to the 815ers and Faraday going back in time, which leads to the atomic bomb blast that supposedly negates this energy, or blows the island up, or kicks off the alternate timeline, or does something else altogether that we don't know about yet.

We sort of know why Eloise manipulated Daniel's life, but we've seen no point yet at which Young Widmore and Young Ellie are tipped off about Desmond and what he's going to do. The only way of tying this up that I can see, is that Future Desmond, knowing what's going to happen with the two timelines, goes back to either immediately after or just before the bomb blast, meets 70s Widmore and Ellie and does whatever he has to do. Probably involving the Swan.

Or in other words, exactly the sort of thing I said would be ridiculous even by Lost standards upthread.

Also Jin is the one dude I really would not want alongside me if I was kidnapped by an insane scientist. He was useless in this ep.

It's still totally unclear why he was kidnapped and not any of the others, so I'll cut him some slack.

I'm still hoping they don't go with the conclusion that it'll be their kid who is the candidate and neither Sun nor Jin.

I think Widmore just needed Jin to draw MIB to him so he could trap him inside some big magnet or alternate universe or infinite bag of holding or something, but this happened too soon so now he's scrambling to get ready for the inevitable MIB assault

I don't think Ji-yeon is a candidate as I thought candidates were selected and rejected based on their actions during life ...

that wouldn't be very sporting of jacob after all that "once you're on the island your past life don't matter" jibber jabber.

I think that applied for just run-of-the-mill suckers who were drafted into becoming MIB bait, but not candidates for Jacob's office. I got the impression that candidates required study, as in staring at them for decades using a lighthouse mirror

Was a little bugged by the 'can you feel the LURVE Desmond? Can you? Can you?' stuff, but once I remembered that a lot of this was about the idea of constants enabling you to keep it together between timelines, it was good. Still have no idea why he needs the manifest in the alt though. Is he going to round up everyone on 815? If so, why them? 6 billion people in the alt are alternate versions of themselves.

Had this bizarre idea that he was going to bring the alt-manifest back with him somehow to the island, then run around telling everybody 'hey look, I have a piece of paper here which says that I was on the plane with you ... but that didn't happen RIGHT' ... but that doesn't make sense either. I think. My brain may be dissolving into sludge.

and yeh Charlie doing the hand thing in the car, creepy as fuck

best ep of the season. by a long way.

have to agree this should've happened already tho - seems like there's so much left to do

the alt is starting to feel like some sort of matrix style dreamworld at this point, like someone will peel back a palm tree and oh look it's the restaurant

thought this ep was appalling until the last 10-15 mins. eloise widmore jumped the shark, "because i bloody do!", ugh shut up.

also the love will find a way stuff only was irritating off island time wasting until the last 10-15 mins.

the actual reveals were quite good tho, I'm guessing Desmond is now there to show them the flash sideways is bullshit. I suppose the flash sideways were caused by detonating the bomb but it's hard to say how they still exist on the island as well as this.

It's still totally unclear why Jin was kidnapped and not any of the others.

I thought it was because he drew up the Dharma maps of the island, and they need him to locate some pocket of EM.

Eloise has always been corny as fuck though, I just take it as read now.

The Charlie-as-Constant thing hadn't occurred to me but makes sense. I wonder if actually you have to have a near-death experience for the real timeline to seep through into your brain? Seemed to happen for Charlie and Desmondan also Juliet in the other timeline and maybe Sun getting shot will do this as well.

It doesn't actually feel like there's that much to cover now, the Hurley ep should reveal a fair bit and once we get the big timlines and Jacob and MIB reveals it's all guns and explosions til the end, right?

Once we get any explanation about anything ever then yeah they've explained everything.

Charlie is also so annoying, let's hope that's the end of him and his 5-year-old child persona.

The alt timeline is the world under smokey/locke spell, Eloise was actually smokey speaking, remeber the start, the island is sunk and smokey most likely escaped. Charle knew it was all fake thats what he was trying to tell desmond

Good theory. Maybe Smokey took over the bodies of all the people who died on the Island when it sank, including Eloise and Widmore, and he's been trying to keep Desmond and the 815ers content so they won't do whatever they're going to do.

Finally watched this last night. My wife loved it, I kinda feel like...

i didnt even get into this when complaining above, but this whole twee true love peels back the verneer of altverse bullshit is totally unsatisfying to me and makes me v v worried about some big romanto-jack/kate/sawyer fucking timewaster still to come, which is the other reason i thought this ep was shit.

Also, this episode had some good stuff in it but I just didn't feel it much at all, don't know if it was badly written or badly acted dialogue.

Also, I'd prefer like vague half-answers to full-on answers or THE SECRET INGREDIENT IS LOVE.

It's not really "true love" though is it, it's someone you had an intense relationship with in the alt timeline. So for Desmond it's Charlie, who he spent several episodes saving and eventually watched die.

The other timeline is still buried in there in the alt-consciousness in some way. It's the Constant thing all over again.

Really looking forward to Desmond's "you're not supposed to be here" interventions from now on, anyway.

I'm trying to figure out where Widmore is going with this ElectroMagnetic stuff. He wants mapper Jin because presumably he knows of other EM pockets on the Island. Radzinsky drilled in that one spot because the EM pocket was closer to the surface, I assume--but there must be other pockets, since the Island seemingly didn't lose its powers after the Hatch exploded.

Still don't know what he plans to do when he finds another pocket, or Desmond will have to do.

Maybe he's the only one who cant be harmed by smokey thats why? those things they use to keep smokey out are some sort of electromagnetic fence arent they? he seemed to know his purpose after he got zapped and seemed willing to go with sayid at the end
