two months pass...

so basically he married off roast beef, killed little nephew, and then ran out of ideas.

RIP achewood, the great outdoor fight book tour was too much for you and we all knew it had to happen eventually

n/a is right to make fun. we shouldn't care so much about the direction this thing we like is taking because it's free! pay to care.

also how high can you count?

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

i understand this thing must be onstad's primary or only means of income, but the thing is just spread too thin -- i get it that to make money you offer paid subscriptions, but premium membership twitter / blog / discussion / zine nonsense can only expand so far before it diverts value from the main product, yes?

I subscribed in 2007 and was pretty disappointed by the bonus content.

andrew m., Wednesday, 31 December 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

xp That's too bad. That twitter thing looks ridiculous though.

I think he's saving up the Little Nephew storyline so he can try to recreate the Great Outdoor Fight with a big rescue plot, which could go either way.

robertwolf8080, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)

But nothing can recreate the GOF so get ready for another few months of boring in the new year

robertwolf8080, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

here are some reasons: it sucks and is gay

Basically this, the strips from the book tour until now have been bitty (often good still IMO) but the impression is that he's been snowed under with stuff (maybe this is protesting too much I dunno) and I'd rather he kept the good plotlines for good strips that he can actually go at, if y'get me

Google interview sez the first 'proper' Dark Horse collection will be strips 1-400 with the alt text included and lots of backstory for the characters. Really, really hope he integrates the contemporary blog posts into the new books myself.

Lightbulb Classic (sic), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

huh, guy looks kind of a douche:

Agree but seriously feel for him and what's been happening in his life. It could be hugely detrimental to his business.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

He's been flailing for at least a year.

jkfu (libcrypt), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

I have no idea what's going on in his life, but it does suck that he hasn't been able to come out with more strips lately. He's also working on that print collection now, right?

Yeah, I think he had 2-3 weeks notice to pack up and move? (xpost)

WmC, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

yeah that's what i heard. really sucks for a self-supporting business that's essentially based on the goodwill of his readers.

i think he needs to get the strip back on a regular schedule, not because of anything on a readership end but because he's said in every interview he's done that he doesn't pre-plan and you can tell when he's not in a rhythm at all. i liked it when he could do a two or three-week story arc and then a run of normal dailies--he needs to get back to some of the longer and more involved stuff. it also seems like he doesn't really know how to develop his characters further, which is funny because two or three of them are still pretty untapped.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

I think he's still trying to figure out how much new stuff to put behind the paywall without driving people away.

WmC, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

it's funny because i would have paid if he started that up right after the great outdoor fight. now? not really in the mood.
