The Jacob as Smokey's jailer thing with the Island as the prison has been my thinking since the end of last series, so I'm kinda happy they went with that. The explanation of how the Black Rock ended up in the middle of the jungle didn't make any sense whatsoever though.

whoever said that the final episode would be jack and locke on the beach might be very OTM.

This would make me so happy. I can't imagine anything that would piss Jack off more than having to spend eternity babysitting Locke.

I like the sunken Island as smashed bottle idea as well, and the alt-timeline what happens with Smokey out and about in the world - they hinted at that when Smokey told Sayid he could get him back to Nadia.

The next big mythology ep will be the Ilana one, maybe? Either that or we're going to get a whole episode of Jacob and Smokey at the dawn of time.

Also dudes, they totally showed a wild boar feeding on a dead slave. That was kind of grim.

Kinda sad they killed Faraday off - I wonder what he'd make trying to scientifically explain all this shit. Trying to work out how Desmond might fit into it all as well.

Also this might be a stupid question but why did Jacob not just pick Richard as his successor?

At the time Jacob didn't need a successor, his primary goal it seems is just to piss off Smokey and prove him wrong. I'm guessing around 2004 when the time travel shenanigans started happening he figured out he wasn't going to last much longer... maybe as far back as Ben becoming the leader of the Others?

Yeah, that was absurd. I was pretty surprised that the explanation for the Rock to be in the middle of the jungle was skyscraper-high wave. Maybe Jacob screwed up his summoning mojo and ended up summoning half the Atlantic along with that ship.

Looking like the Jacob and MIB we saw in this ep are 'younger' versions of themselves. I think the scene at the opening of the S5 finale is after the whole thing with the Black Rock. Though it is confusing to the audience to have two ships.

So there's the idea that MIB and Jacob are prisoner and jailer, and the idea that Jacob's got some point to prove. MIB is more invested in the idea of just getting the hell out even if he has to annihilate the island and everybody on it to do it. So why does Jacob feel it's necessary to prove some moral point to MIB, since it doesn't really have any impact on MIB's having to be jailed? And isn't the implication that if MIB capitulated to Jacob's argument, he'd be redeemed in Jacob's eyes and therefore worthy of being released?

i am confused as to why mib's instructions to ricardo to kill jacob were the same as dogen's (jacob's mouthpiece) instructions to sayid to kill locke - maybe mib and jacob are 2 sides of same person like the good and evil angels sitting on your shoulder. maybe they both have to be killed w/ no one taking their places to set everyone on the island free and let them live their lives. i don't trust that jacob is really "good". how do we know it's not just smokey manifesting himself as the island's guardian to get what he wants?

Totally agree on the modern American accents. Felt Jacob was fine but mib's entire demeanour was 00s villain, it really didn't work well. You have to feel he'd be weirder as some ancient force for evil....

Is there any hope of tommy lee jones and will smith rounding off the series with a specially tailored version of "men in black" featuring smokey

We don't know where Jacob and MIB are from yet, though. They might be American for all we know. They should have had British accents though. Mysterious ancient shifty untrustworthy dudes always work better with British accents.

I think the Jacob that Hurley is seeing is definitely the real Jacob, but I'm not so sure as to whether he actually wants what's best for anyone concerned.

Hurley's ep could reveal a hell of a lot actually, it's good to see his character being used for something other than 'amiable, goofy series intro'.

yeah i'd say that when mib first appears to richard that the contrast between mib's accent and the accents of richard's past was almost exaggerated. plus they spent some time earlier in the episode focussing on richard's attempts to learn english. hmmm

when i say accent's of richard's past i just mean spanish ppl and that english slave trader dude. just seemed to strange when all-american chill bro smokey shows up.

yeah, i've gotta assume jacob & mib accents are deliberately modern and casual. if there's one thing this show is good at, it's bringing the melodramatic gravitas. the fact that jacob & smokey are so calm and ordinary has to be for a reason.

This whole redemption thing must be going somewhere (Richard wanting redemption from his "sins", Sayid unable to redeem himself and change his nature, etc.) Possibly Ben will be the person who ends up proving that even the murderer of Jacob can redeem himself. But what will it mean? That MIB himself will see humanity's worth and stop wanting to kill people?

When did Richard stop/start/stop/start believing he was in purgatory then? He tells Jack it's a secret he's known for a long time, not a secret he used to believe, then stopped believing for 250 years, then decided might be true after all. And at the end of S5 he told Sun he'd seen watched all the oceanic gang die. What did he mean by that?

I think Richard stopped believing he was in Hell (don't know where purgatory comes in) when Jacob convinced him that MIB was a liar. Now he's having crisis of faith because Jacob is dead--and he's doubting whether anything Jacob told him was true. I doubt there's any more to it than that.

They can't really explain the "I watched them all die" bit without revealing what happened immediately after the Incident/bomb blast and they're not going to do that for a while.

Given that in Jack etc's personal timelines they zapped back to 2007 or whenever, it's possible that Richard thought they were vapourised or something? Would that be ridiculous?

I can't see Jacob being evil or any such thing. We might be meant to wonder about him but loosely he's obv a good guy.

A bit, if only because between seeing them vanish in the 70s and telling Sun they were dead in 2007, he'd seen them all crash on the island and hang round there for a couple of years.

Yeah yeah, I know, but then he said Jack was dead and implied he'd always known Jack was dead and I just think it was unclear what he was meant to believe and when.
