I'll take good vs evil over an endlessly convoluted explanation. obviously you need some tolerance for that to be a fan of this show but I like when its tethered to something simple and clear.

I didn't think I would be down with the show ending up as some big quasi-religion good vs evil thing but the way they presented it is halfway interesting imo

dmr, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 03:37 (sixteen years ago)

I'm going to love finding out exactly why MIB is evil incarnate for Jacob, a lot of what MIB has perpetrated onscreen could be put down to his just trying to escape

Brakhage, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 03:39 (sixteen years ago)

i did like Action Jacob. so much better than Probst Jacob.

Favorite episode of the season by far.

Fundamentally are people happy that the island is a cork keeping evil trapped? Are people happy with this turn of events?

this doesn't seem new at all, it just seems like a more clear metaphor for the stuff that was happening with the numbers, etc

tehresa, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 06:07 (sixteen years ago)

i mean... nothing. the island didn't want me to say that.

tehresa, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 06:07 (sixteen years ago)

Not a bad episode! Must be a series first with Jack, Sun etc gathering around the camp fire sharing information without Jack punching someone, although still asking ridiculous questions "what do we do next?" "I don't know" "well who DOES know?" I mean who talks like that apart from a 3-year-old?

Explanation for busted statue was a bit lame.

But it does explain why Jacob would build a lighthouse...

I thought this was totally ridiculous, but I am sort of impressed with how ridiculous they went with it! And the acting was awesome.

It is a seriously weird tonal shift for the show, that's for sure.

So who is "evil"'s mother? (Or was he lying to Kate?) And who is the little boy? And how come Smokey stopped walking around like Titus Welliver? What does the sideways timeline mean?! Damn you, Lindelof and Cuse!

i really liked this episode! on paper the story was kind of broad and cliche, but the acting saved it and then some.

i thought of this thread at the beginning of the episode, when richard shouted at jack "you want to know the secret i've been keeping??" and jack just looked back at him with infuriating nonchalance. god i want to punch jack in the face.

the jaws of impermanence and soul death (reddening), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 09:47 (sixteen years ago)

So who is "evil"'s mother?

I've seen casting news on that, but some might consider an actor's name a spoiler.

Maybe Jacob & MIB were fairly normal dudes who ended up on the island in the distant past & got recruited into these roles--much like these new candidates.

President Keyes, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 09:56 (sixteen years ago)

There was a kind of hilarious uproar this week when the actress who plays Zoe (the Tina Fey chick) told Us Weekly that she'd received the final scripts for the season and her character was in every scene.

She later clarified that she was only sent the pages in which her character appears.

i feel ppl that the wine-in-the-bottle thing isnt the best explanation they can come up with (not by a long shot) but this was still a pretty rad episode and the actors sold it well i thought

max, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 11:42 (sixteen years ago)

lol Keyes i didn't think about that but what a dumbass. i guess that still means she's in multiple scenes, though.

kinda neat after all this time to have nestor & jorge do a scene in spanish together

nestor really went in hard on this episode

shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 11:51 (sixteen years ago)

Loved Jacob being a total dick. He doesn't seem that smart though. Or especially "good" - he needs to kill people by crashing their planes/ships on the island, then put more of them at risk of being killed by the smoke monster, so that he can test whether they make the "right" choices, without them knowing that they're being tested, and meanwhile put himself at risk of being killed?

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 11:51 (sixteen years ago)

yeah there's got to be something more that explains his motivations

shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 12:17 (sixteen years ago)

So in Jacob's analogy he (or the candidate) is the bottle, right? The evil can still get out by smashing the bottle.

Anyway, I loved that all this episode did was explored fan theories that were around in Season 1 and still didn't reach any better conclusions than we did at the time. Still think there's potential for purgatory to be the answer and Smokey realising at the end after 'winning' that he can't escape anyway.

Diamanti Gallas (aldo), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 12:28 (sixteen years ago)

i still think the on-island stuff is the alt and they really did save themselves when the bomb went off. this whole last season is here to answer questions and explore what would have happened--so yeah, alt-purgatory seems very likely.

whoever said that the final episode would be jack and locke on the beach might be very OTM.

shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 12:34 (sixteen years ago)

So in Jacob's analogy he (or the candidate) is the bottle, right? The evil can still get out by smashing the bottle.

the bottle isn't really part of the analogy. the wine is the "evil," the cork is the island that keeps the evil from spreading. if jacob were the bottle, the evil could get out now because jacob is dead. it's just an analogy.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 12:50 (sixteen years ago)

evil :: wine
island :: cork
jacob :: bottle
statue :: glass (for wine)
black rock :: nice dinner (to eat with wine)
smokey :: pipe (to smoke after wine)
sawyer :: horse

max srsly i thought of you when nestor was ridin horse

so does a sunken island mean the wine has been spilled?

mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:13 (sixteen years ago)

was hoping for a scene with Hurley saying "so let me get this straight...this wine...is evil..."

anybody got any good lost nerd blog links yet for last night's ep?

shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:48 (sixteen years ago)

I kept wondering if Hurley is the new Alpert, after Richard's role was explained.

mh, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:54 (sixteen years ago)

didn't expect them to go with an all out flashback but i guess it makes sense for alt-lines to only apply to the 815 passengers.

wondering why MIB didn't free Alpert sooner, and what the deal with the wife was. Isabella appearing to Richard on the Black Rock didn't seem to make sense - how could it be the monster's manifestation if he then appears to "kill" her and then claim that Jacob had done this? also wouldn't Richard refuse to believe he was in hell if his wife was there (and he seemed to believe it really was her?)?

the Black Rock's arrival on the island not seeming to match what we saw at the end of the last season also jars. doesn't seem a big deal but otoh a ridiculous continuity error if not...

mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:59 (sixteen years ago)

but i guess it makes sense for alt-lines to only apply to the 815 passengers

and Ben. and anyone who isn't Richard. hmm.

mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:59 (sixteen years ago)

jacob had no idea that richard was on the island and a boat crashed. the ship you saw coming to the island last season was obviously a different boat.

shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:01 (sixteen years ago)

oh but he said he borught the ship there, didn't he? jacob is a shady motherfucker.

shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:03 (sixteen years ago)

i trust man in black more. on the recap episode yesterday when the widmore scene came on it labeled him as a "very dangerous man"

if man in black is evil incarnate, what the hell is going on?

shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:05 (sixteen years ago)

wondering why MIB didn't free Alpert sooner, and what the deal with the wife was.

To the first part, he wanted Richard near death and ready to agree to anything. 2nd part, that's a good question. Did MIB create the manifestation, did Jacob, or a 3rd explanation?

Religious Embolism (WmC), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:07 (sixteen years ago)

Isabella appearing to Richard on the Black Rock didn't seem to make sense - how could it be the monster's manifestation if he then appears to "kill" her and then claim that Jacob had done this?

Isabella was a manifestation of smoke monster, "she" goes up to the top of the ship, turns back into the smoke monster to make it appear the smoke monster is killing Isabella ... smokey did it all to get Richard on his side and convince him to kill Jacob

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:14 (sixteen years ago)

I'm mostly confused about how a old-fashioned wood ship could smash into a giant stone statue, break the statue into pieces, but not sustain any hull damage at all.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:15 (sixteen years ago)

the Black Rock's arrival on the island not seeming to match what we saw at the end of the last season also jars. doesn't seem a big deal but otoh a ridiculous continuity error if not...

Oceanic 815 crash didn't match between passengers and Benry/Juliet observing it either.

Diamanti Gallas (aldo), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:16 (sixteen years ago)

Argh who says it was the Black Rock they saw at the end of the last season? It could have been any other ship. Jacob said he had brought "lots" of people to the island before Richard.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:23 (sixteen years ago)

Isabella was a manifestation of smoke monster, "she" goes up to the top of the ship, turns back into the smoke monster to make it appear the smoke monster is killing Isabella ... smokey did it all to get Richard on his side and convince him to kill Jacob

what's interesting then is that he can project a person without being there himself, or at least being a short distance away in another form. seems like a logistical nightmare.

mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:38 (sixteen years ago)

Didn't he do that before with Alex in the temple?

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

and yeah it could've been another ship and most likely is, but this is CRAP

mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

Didn't he do that before with Alex in the temple?

and with Yemi too i guess. it just seemed more convoluted this time.
