Went for a run with a co-worker, first run in 9 years. We were supposed to run outside, but it was supposed to rain so we went on the treadmill at the work gym. She made me take it very gently (4 mins slow jog/1 min fast walk for 30 mins) but I wasn't at all out of breath. I was HOT though!! Now I remember how this felt when I used to run on a treadmill: the heat was the very worst part of it for me. So two questions:
When you run outside what do you do about carrying water on long runs?
How do you combat overheating in general? Carry wet wipes in a pocket or something?
(Please don't tell me to run in flimsy shorts to combat the heat, it ain't gonna happen, not yet at least. Legs stay covered).

During the spring/summer/fall, I usually just rely on water fountains on the lakefront path. They are numerous. During the winter I have a Nathan 4-bottle belt that I run if I'm going over 8 miles. For shorter runs I have a handheld Amphipod bottle. I was skeptical about a handheld, but I've pretty much gotten used to it. It fits snug on your hand so you don't have to grip it, it just sort of hangs there while you're running.
As for staying cool, just make sure you aren't wearing cotton. Any sort of technical clothing that will wick away moisture should keep you pretty cool.

I carry straight water for anything around 4+ miles/45 minutes or longer. At 7-8 I start carrying a sports drink (I use Heed, which is like Gatorade et al., without all the processed crap and corn syrup). Around half-marathon distance or longer I will carry a drink that also has some protein in it (my choice is Perpetuem; similar to Heed, but with a 3:1 ratio of carbs to protein).
Also, for runs longer than 8 miles or so, I try to loop past my house every 6-8 miles to refill water; that way I don't have to pack it up like a camel for the long haul, I can just carry a handheld bottle.

I have an Amphipod handheld too; love it. You'll barely notice it's there once you get used to it.
Also recommended: Nathan brand makes really good bottles.

suppose i'm gonna see a podiatrist about this sprain just in case.
― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:08 (sixteen years ago)
still feeling it?
― DarraghmacKwacz (darraghmac), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:55 (sixteen years ago)
yep. not horribly; i was able to stationary bike for a half hour. But jogging feels out of the question and if doc thinks this'll heal better with a shot of cortisone or i should get on an oral antiinflammatory i'm down if it'll get me on the road quicker.
― forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:16 (sixteen years ago)
i'm know-nothing on this- is that likely to do any damage in the longer term though?
― DarraghmacKwacz (darraghmac), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:21 (sixteen years ago)
Some great work by everyone. Well done Darraghmac on yer 10K!
Water carrying - I need something as my distances get longer, but I hate carrying anything. I even take my watch off and won't carry anything in my pocket unless absolutely necessary. The amphipod thing looks cool though.
I can't report any improvement in times as I've been a bit under the weather, feeling really tired etc - I set myself a goal of getting to 22 mins for 5K by the end of march and I'm still stuck on 23.10. I've done 3 in the last week - first one was 24 something but I felt shit all the way through, second one I went out too fast and couldn't hang on and the third I stopped after around 4K as I had an excruciating pain from my left foot. This seems to have gone now and I'm not feeling so knackered, so I should be OK for another go at the weekend. I KNOW I should take it easy and the times will come eventually, but y'know.... Maybe I'll go for a slow 10K instead?
― Dr.C, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:27 (sixteen years ago)
I ran a 48 minute 10k over the weekend, on a training run. Not bad considering I normally take it easy and do 10+ minute miles. Just felt really good and let it all hang out, and voila!

doc recommended rest for the next week and a half, stretching once there wasn't immediate pain and jogging only with an ankle brace until I die. He also recommended physical therapy to strengthen the ankle if I wanted to but the guy to see is an hour away and the copay is 40 bucks,so I guess me and that ankle brace is togetha foreva

Jeff, what's the normal recovery time for e.t.? Can you do any running at the moment?
― Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Farting in Space (NickB), Saturday, 27 March 2010 21:29 (sixteen years ago)
Oh yeah, I can run. The pain was the worst a week and a half ago, so I have cut back some, but I did 6 miles today and it's fine, just a little tender. I'm using Superfeet and a ankle sleeve while my insoles are getting fixed. She said as long as it doesn't get any worse, I should be good to go.

Just ordered my girlfriend her very first pair of trail shoes from ZombieRunner.com. Nice pair of Inov-8 shoes in her size, and on clearance ($90 down to $50). She doesn't know these are coming but I think she'll be excited.

5 miles in 58 mins, and i've learned that maybe a wedding the day before isn't the ideal preparation.

Finished my 30k (18.6 miles) this morning in 3:40 and change. First 10k was about 1:06, next two slower. Been under the weather all week (common cold) and allergies on top of that, so had trouble breathing well -- stuffy nose/throat. Dry heaved and then uked at mile 3 so that kinda set the tone for the remainder of the race. But, I finished. And sometimes that's what matters on an off day. I'm doing a 25k next Saturday so am going to rest up, hopefully I'll do better then.

yeah i tihnk we'd a guessed what 'uked' signified tbf!
obviously that 3:40 looks pretty great to me, but what would you have been hoping for?
― Jermaine Jenason (darraghmac), Sunday, 28 March 2010 17:55 (sixteen years ago)
Well, I ran the first 10k in 1:06 before I decided to cut my losses and take it easier. Probably could have done a couple more 1:06-1:10 loops and finished between 3:18 and 3:26, on a really good day. My goal going in was about 3:30, given that I'd been feeling bad all week... so wasn't far off the mark, actually.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Sunday, 28 March 2010 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

half marathon today, did it in 2:04 which I would have taken beforehand but I was pacing myself alright, feeling good, did 10 miles in 1:29 and my legs fell apart just after 11 and I walked, limped&shuffled to the end, so eh, aching more than pleased but feel satisfied
― ogmor, Sunday, 28 March 2010 21:39 (sixteen years ago)

I'll hit 50, maybe 60. I hope April will be my month where I return to triple digit totals.
