I figure there is only one outrigger and it's been traveling through time and meeting itself.

I know, seriously, they're like a new compass.

There's three of em though. Beginning of 507 MIB and Ilana are standing by two, and the third was taken by Frank and Sun the night before.

I wasn't trying to get hung up on the boats per se (reminds me of a test question: 'You have three boats. If five people take four trips ...') but I was thinking that the boats, and the people in one in 504, signaled the arrival of yet another group which we haven't seen, maybe from the future, made up either of people we've already met (my guess) or yet to meet. I was wondering whether they were responsible for the Ajira massacre but I'd doubt it given that MIB wanted them gone.

I really don't think Jacob and Smokey represent good vs. evil. They are more like Randolph and Mortimer Duke: two powerful dudes with differing theories about humanity.

Yeah, the good v. evil stuff is a red herring. The show's pretty nuanced when it comes to morality - even Ben, who has a pretty massive body count at this point, isn't irredeemable (well, at least in the alt).

Along with free will vs. destiny, and faith vs. reason, there's another axis in the show, nature vs. nurture. In the alt the inherent character dynamics are largely the same, but the way in which those traits are inflicted on others has changed. The alt is a more conciliatory world, built less on secrecy and private torment as the main island timeline is.

I assume the outriggers have always been there. I mean, how did people go back and forth between the island and hydra station way back in season 3?

Nope. My guess is that we'll see that scene reenacted in S6 from the viewpoint of the people on that boat firing on Sawyer/Juliet/Miles/Locke etc.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if we never see it again.

think the most sensible explanation would be that that incident occurred in the 'now' at some point and it was Widmore's ppl doing the firing

I'd to point out that there is a Richard Alpert episode tonight and we should be anticipating the hell out of it already.

was a bit put off by his repeated "i've seen things you wouldn't believe" remarks. yeah yeah...but the next week previews for Lost these days are really terrible.

presumably the altline is based on Richard having left the island at some point (as with Ben), but will he still be ageless and wear eyeliner?

Maybe he starts aging when the island sinks & he'll look 70.

do we know Richard will have a flash sideways (and not, say, a flashback?)

I hope it's a flashback.

A flash sideways would, I think, give us a big indication on where the alt-timeline is going, and possibly what happened after the bomb blast. A flashback would at least answer the Black Rock question. There's no reason why they can't do both, actually, and have his episode go over an arc of several hundred years.

I just hope the entire episode takes place in the past other than an intro/outro framing device. Key points: arrival of Black Rock, Richard being found chained up down below, Jacob touch garbage, what happened when he went to meet young Ben.

The question I still want to see addressed is whether the island has been moved before and time-jumped. That'd explain why Richard looked completely different to young Ben, right?

I hope Jack & co. sit around a campfire & Richard tells his story, doing spooky voices for MIB & Jacob.
