That was a good episode mainly because Ben's such a great character that I don't think it's possible to do a bad Ben centric (though Ilana doing her Ana Lucia impression was giving me some early doubts), but remember when Ben was this master manipulator who always had a plan? Now he's just this twerpy dude meakly helping Sun build a shelter. I wish it wasn't so.

i would just like to thank all of you with the long elaborate wild-ass theories, because it makes this thread a treat. i've watched every episode of this show and i'm totally clueless. but its nice to read about it anyway. and of course its comforting to know that lots of other people still watch and have no real idea of what the hell is going on. if they DO actually start dropping big bombs of info and all becomes clear it will be one big group..........i was gonna write orgasm, but that might be taking things too far. or maybe not. BUT they do have the power to do that. the people who make this show. here's hoping.
― scott seward, Friday, 12 March 2010 04:15 (sixteen years ago)
they really need to, because it would be super-nice to start giving a fuck what happens

The thing that really bugs me is that the show acts like the candidates are being presented with some sort of moral choice, but they/we have no idea what that choice is. How are we supposed to be invested in what they do if we don't even know what they're supposed to do, or what the stakes are? Why would they side with Jacob when he's never even introduced himself to any of them except Hurley? (He never introduced himself to the others, just touched 'em and gave 'em some advice.) As far as they know, Jacob is a spooky guy who sometimes lives in a creepy little house. And we're almost halfway through the last season!
Also, I have been turning around the idea that Christian represents yet another force on the island, and I can't figure out what that might be. And then there's the bloody little boy.
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Friday, 12 March 2010 08:20 (sixteen years ago)
kinda hate how nobody knows which Kwon is the candidate - transparently the only reason for keeping both Jin and Sun around.
Jack's shit-eating grin when the dynamite fizzled out almost made me like him again good job.
agree that the blackmail attempt on Ben was quite weak but also alt Ben is weak enough for it to have held, in a 'ok i'm in over my head you win' way.
― mdskltr (blueski), Friday, 12 March 2010 08:52 (sixteen years ago)
Ben and Richard both being ridiculously emo and disillusioned now is kinda funny. Compared to Richard, Ben seems to be holding it together reasonably well seeing as he's killed about 200 people for no reason.

Some other interesting stuff from a previously quoted TV Guide Q&A (including this one that we argued about upthread):
If Jacob died in the fire, then can we trust the “person” appearing to Hurley? Couldn’t it be the Man in Black taking another form? — Jeremy, via e-mail
Nope, says Garcia. “Hurley is the only one who can see Jacob, so I’m pretty confidant that is indeed Jacob,” he says. Confirms Cuse, “You can trust that's a reliable representation of Jacob.”
Why is the Man in Black now “stuck” in Locke’s body as Ilana mentioned? —Rob M., San Diego, Ca.
Per Lindelof, “There are all these rules that govern the way the island works, and one of them is that when Jacob died, whatever form the Monster was in at that time he cannot change anymore.”
So why is baby Aaron so special?—Jennifer, via e-mail
“There’s a running theme with special children on our show – like Aaron and Walt,” notes Yunjin Kim. But more than being concerned if Aaron can “shoot lasers out of his eyes,” Cuse says fans should focus on how his existence is effecting characters on the island, specifically Kate, who “stated that her mission was to go back to the island and find Claire and bring her back to the outside world so she could be the mother to her own child.”
― President Keyes, Friday, 12 March 2010 11:57 (sixteen years ago)
I was surprised/shocked Kate’s name was crossed out in the cave but then her name popped up on the dial in the lighthouse. What’s up with that?— Lyly Ford, France
The real question, says Lindelof, is: “What is the relationship between the lighthouse and the cave? There are several possibilities.”
Wondering now if Smokey also has Candidates (the same set as Jacob) to replace himself and he crosses them off for his own reasons. Perhaps he's already decided that Kate is worthless, while Jacob still had some faith in her.

lol at cuse being all "hello, we're trying to do a serious tv show here"
― sonderangerbot, Friday, 12 March 2010 12:13 (sixteen years ago)
Having an existence that affects characters on the Island does not really equate to being special. It affects to being, well, a character with a plot function to play.
― Maraca Son Sistema (Matt DC), Friday, 12 March 2010 12:19 (sixteen years ago)

From Jorge Garcia and his wife's podcast/blog thing:
Just to clear up the online discussion...the line was "cheese curds", not "cheese carrots" when Hurley wakes up.
It's a Wisconsin thing, and oddly enough during our podcast for episode #610 that we recorded while in Wisconsin for Xmas, we mention cheese curds quite a bit.
One of the writers of the epi, Adam Horowitz, went to UW-Madison so I guess he was just reminiscing about the fantastic wonders that are cheese curds.
I miss Wisconsin,

this was like the scene in S2 when the alarm was going off and he was all like "whassup john u gonna open that door and let me pull sayid offa this henry cat or we gonna find out what happens when the count hits zero hmmm?"

― Not the real Village People, Friday, 12 March 2010 19:12 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, this is the downside to creating drama by not having Jacob explain anything to anyone ever. You wonder what the point is of doing what he tells you to do or somehow represents.
Really at this point the O6 should suspect Hurley of being Jacob (hey, if Locke is MIB ...)
― Brakhage, Friday, 12 March 2010 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

In the D&C podcast they hinted that Kate's name being crossed out in the cave but not on the Lighthouse wheel was perhaps a bit of disinformation Jacob was putting out for Smokey to find.
