did anyone else find the sub scene to be reminiscent of desmond's drunken return to the island at the end of season two? it's probably just my imagination, but i'm still holding out hope for the return of des...

I'd guess the island got moved via donkey wheel once and wound up right under a ship.

ahhh nice point - and that temptation's denied twice.

The idea isn't they all live these idyllic fantasy lives - the characters at their core are still essentially the same, Locke will still be the "Don't tell me what I can't do!" guy, just in the new timeline they're all seem at least a little more evolved or fortunate in their life choices. Didn't see that bit as out of character for him at all - seems clear without the influence of Helen he would be doing more stuff like that. He's been leading people by the nose since Season 1.

Great episode. I actually didn't know whether Dr Linus was going to sell out Alex again in the alt. Good to see Nikki & Paolo get a mention too.
My only complaint was that Ben is such a great liar - there's no way he would have fumbled that bit about "oh of course yes the Smoke monster killed Jacob, yes, just like i said". I guess it could indicate how screwed up he is by the whole thing.

How come Miles asked what the smoke monster was after the Smokey temple bust? Didn't he encounter it at the barracks when Ben summoned him to get Keamy et al? I honestly can't remember.

no idea. you figure everyone has encountered most of the island's quirks by now but then again it takes a temple full of people getting slaughtered for them to really care enough to ask any questions... and not that it's that important i guess but just how did miles know about the buried diamonds?

Nikki and Paolo were paralyzed so their last thoughts were probably "WTF we are being buried alive and covered in diamonds" & Miles can read the last thoughts of the deceased..

Doh. Too slow. I figure if I were Miles I would read the dead minds of all available to me!

xp because I have to believe that the Nikki & Paolo "storyline" was FOR A REASON! And will be key to everything!

Sometime in season four the writers figured out how to end the show, but needed a way to get $8 million onto the island, so they wrote in Nikki & Paolo.
LOST

not sure where this is from but

Facts:

Ethan Goodspeed is an OBGYN in LA, having not grown up on the Island.
Ben Linus lives with his old, sick father, Roger. Roger mentions DHARMA and the fact that they went to the Island and subsequently left.
Alex and Danielle live in LA, not on the Island.
In 2004 the Island is underwater and has vestiges of DHARMA on it, indicating a DHARMA presence before the sinking.
Speculation:

I propose that the first five seasons of LOST are in fact the “Alt” as in an altered timeline. The Flashsideways that we have been seeing depict the original, unaltered timeline.

How would that work?

Ben didn’t grow up on the Island, he and Roger left for some reason. What if they were evacuated? But not due to Jack and company trying to blow up Jughead, but because of the drilling at the Orchid setting off the Swan. The difference is because Ben was evacuated, he doesn’t grow up to turn the donkey wheel. Without the donkey wheel turning there were no time travelers. No time travelers means no Jughead.

Ergo, the Flashsideways depict the original, unaltered timeline and what we have been watching for five years has been the result of the time traveling in Season 5.

Back to Ben being evacuated. If he was evacuated then it stands to reason that Chang and Co. figured out Radzinski’s drilling was mucking everything up on their own. Why not? It’s not as if they had Sayid the Hostile and LaFleur and Juliet the Traitors-in-Their-Midst to worry about. So if they figured it out on their own they probably ordered the evacuation, but couldn’t stop the Swan from exploding because they didn’t have Jughead.

Maybe that’s why the Island sunk, because of the chain reaction set off by drilling at the Orchid.

So since the Island sank in 1977, then it wasn’t there for Danielle and her crew to wash up on, thus they made it back to civilization and Alex lives a normal life.

Conclusion:

The Flashsideways are not depicting an alternate timeline where Jughead was detonated, it is in fact depicting the original timeline where none of the time traveling and Incident stuff in Season 5 took place and the Island sank as a result of the DHARMA Initiative drilling at the Orchid.

For some as-yet-unknown reason, Jacob and/or the Man in Black decide on a do over, (perhaps Jacob in his capacity as the Guardian of the Island) and cause the time traveling, which in a chicken-or-the-egg scenario cause the real Alternate time line, ours, to come about.

I don't think it's the Oceanic Six. There are six candidates, they don't necessarily correspond to the O6. Also I doubt it's eternal, they live until they fulfil their purpose, Michael-style.

Ilana said there were six remaining candidates - Jack and Hurley obviously, Sawyer probably, Kate possibly, either Jin or Sun or both, and Ilana said Lapidus was a candidate right at the end of last season. I suppose Aaron might be one as well.

Also my guess is that Widmore has Desmond tied up in that sub.

Well, it was something like she needed a recommendation from a Yale (or wherever it was) grad, and if he became a disgraced Yale grad then that'd make the recommendation worthless whether he went ahead and gave it or not, which is why Ben had to back down.

that seemed like such a dumb negotiation imo -- "i'll write her a letter that MAY get her into the college she MAY not be able to afford anyway unless she gets a full ride scholarship, if you don't do something that would DEFINITELY ruin my career (and possibly tarnish my credibility to the point that Yale wouldn't listen to me anyway"
