I think the cave really belongs to Smokey in spite of the "Jacob's Ladder" joke - all we know about it is what Flocke has said and I think at this point he has lied about at least some things? Anyone remember? That might be an important point. Has he lied? Has Jacob?
― sleeve, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:02 (sixteen years ago)
He's all, "Hey Ben come with us you can be leader of the island again" pretty lie-tastic.
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:04 (sixteen years ago)
Also, as far as the Dharma sub is concerned: when Widmore was coming in going, the Others had possession of the submarine because they'd seized the island from the Dharmas. When Alpert went to see young Locke, they didn't have the sub. In fact, it's quite possible that the Dharma submarine hadn't even arrived at the island at that point. So Alpert clearly left the island in some other way, and almost definitely not via the donkey wheel which seems like a worst-case scenario thing.
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:06 (sixteen years ago)
I thought everyone staying on the island was going to die once smokey's group left? Who knows.
Alpert was looking kind of sentimentally at the manacles in the hold of the Black Rock. I wonder if he was the prisoner or the imprisoner?
― mh, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:07 (sixteen years ago)
good point about the timing (xp)
― sleeve, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:11 (sixteen years ago)
Oh yeah, pretending to be Locke is a pretty big lie.
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:22 (sixteen years ago)
So what's up with Christian, I wonder.
They still haven't recovered his body in the sideways timeline.
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:29 (sixteen years ago)
It is a good point about the timing with the dharma sub, but it doesn't change my opinion of the larger points: (1) that the alt is showing the result of their lives without jacob's interference (or at least without Jacob's interference after '77 or whenever it is the island is to have sunk), and (2) that there's not a strong reason to believe that Alpert was watching Locke at Jacob's request. But we'll just have to see how the show resolves some of this stuff.
― Mister Jim, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:32 (sixteen years ago)
I think they did recover his body in the alt, they just didn't show it. Jack's mother said David was upset at the funeral, indicating that there WAS a funeral, indicating that they had gotten the body? That was my thought process anyway, which made the whole missing body thing a let down, imo.
― Mister Jim, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:35 (sixteen years ago)
I think that's an insight into the show's writing though, lol. They wanted Jack and Locke to meet in the alt, so they create the mysteries of the missing corpse and knives so that they can meet in the baggage claim area. A few weeks later, that whole mystery turns out to be completely unimportant (they both got there stuff back a couple of days later), and for that matter I can't even remember if that conversation between Jack and Locke mattered at all either.
― Mister Jim, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:41 (sixteen years ago)
In the sideways timeline, the writers are clearly presenting each character with some sort of conflict that their original selves would have handled differently. Ben would have sold Alex out, but this time he compromises to help her. Locke normally would continue questing, but instead has accepted domesticity and his limitations. Sayid normally would avenge his family, but instead chose the path of peace and acceptance, and only killed Keamy et al. in self-defense. Killing Keamy is the only thing he did that seems more like something Old Sayid would do, but I think it was inevitable at that point.I would argue that Jack seems pretty well-adjusted, has an improving relationship with his kid, doesn't seem to be an alcoholic... he seems like he's in a good place.
I would argue that Jack seems pretty well-adjusted, has an improving relationship with his kid, doesn't seem to be an alcoholic... he seems like he's in a good place.
I think Jack was still an alcoholic in this timeline (probably still inherited from Dad) but recovered - there was a scene where his mother offers him a drink in the middle of the day, and he refuses, to which she says "Good for you" earnestly - another problem he turned around.
TBH I'm crossing my fingers that the sideways universe DOESN'T suddenly go wrong and it turns out that indeed without Jacob's influence these guys would have made the right decisions. If they do go the route where the island's influence and induced tragedies were in fact for the "greater good" of the world I'll probably be a little disappointed. (That said, I thought the Jack/Richard scenes in this ep were great, classic Lost.)
― Nhex, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:45 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I'm not sure why the hostility towards the sideflashes, when flashes of some sort have always been a device of the show to explain/illuminate parallel Island action.

MIB's line to Richard ("it's good to see you out of those chains") a few episodes ago seems to give a pretty strong indication toward the former.

moms don't typically offer recovering alcoholics drinks tbh. maybe he was just a drinker.

i have hostility towards the sideflashes because theres plenty of stuff to resolve without throwing another wtf is going on with this into the mix, esp when it so far has been totally boring
― First and Last and Safeways (jjjusten), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:56 (sixteen years ago)
You're gonna have to explain this dairy-hate.
Mega Multi x-post...
I just thought it was such a lazy joke; insulting to the character; all around bad writing (only characters in movies wake up like that, and always as sloppy segues for new scenes; think cartoon security guards dozing as robbers tiptoe past or something like that).
I always CRINGE when critics of the show say stuff like "I gave up with the whole polar bear thing - and how is that one guy still so fat?!?! HAHAHAZzzzz," since in reality they've addressed the issue and actually made Hurley's weight a part of his character (pretty sophisticated discussions and plotting around his shame and guilt) rather than his ENTIRE character (LOL Fatty dreams of cheese curds!).
― Shannon Whirry and the Bad Brains, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 21:58 (sixteen years ago)
Would it make you more or less appeased if "cheese curds" turned out to be a vital clue to the nature of the island?

Ha, maybe in alt-universe, he said cheese carrots.
That's an excellent drawing!

he definitely said cheese carrots!
― shite new answers (cutty), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:04 (sixteen years ago)
The only side flashes I didn't enjoy were the Sayid ones (lol, I even enjoyed the Kate ones on some level). But I can totally understand the hostility to them. Because a lot of people understandably can't fathom how they're relevant or why they should care about them. I don't know whether they'll end up mattering or not, but I'm enjoying them more than I thought I would've before the season began.
lotta x-posts,
― Mister Jim, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:04 (sixteen years ago)
100% cheese carrots
― all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:06 (sixteen years ago)
LOST deserves a special Emmy if it turned out they broadcast different "curds/carrots" versions in different markets.
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:06 (sixteen years ago)
In "Lighthouse" they talk about the funeral in the past-tense, but also Jack's mom asks for a status report on the missing coffin. I think they had the funeral without the body.

hahaha ok curds is fine, I even asked my wife "did he just say "cheese carrots?"
― sleeve, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:28 (sixteen years ago)
PS I am willing to forgive Brits for thinking he said "cheese carrots" because "cheese carrots" are probably an actual food item in the "UK" (like some kind of disgusting candy I'm guessing)
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:29 (sixteen years ago)
When I listened to it just now I will admit that it sounded like "carrots" initially, but "curds" was also plausible.
I didn't even hear that line last night.

― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:33 (sixteen years ago)
I just listened to it again (11min,52sec) and he's doing some weird Tuvan throat thing where there's definitely a "smokey" presence saying carrots in addition to the regularly voiced curds.
Jacob is a curd man, apparently.
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:37 (sixteen years ago)
Thought this was the best sideways flash yet, mostly because Dr Linus was lol and him and Arszt buddying up was totally lol.
Not much actually happened in this one but it was still enjoyable if only because Michael Emerson is so great. Still, for the last few minutes I was totally expecting him to get shot because he'd just gone through his whole redemption - either by Ilana or the sub crosshair. Still, good to see the sub CGI is still reliably shit.
Liked existential crisis Richard as well. I hope we do get an episode that explains the Black Rock at the very least (ie what it's doing in the middle of the island).
The Sawyer episode should give us the biggest clue as to when the timelines divided - it sort of hinges over whether Locke's dad is an arsehole conman or not, because Sawyer's parents were already dead by the time the bomb went off. Or at least I think they were, if someone could clear that up it'd be good.
I hope this series ends with Miles sitting on a big pile of diamonds being sarcastic all day.
