Jeff, Saturday, 6 March 2010 23:40 (sixteen years ago)

my dog and i have been out 3x this week, but i had a root canal and that has cramped my style substantially :(

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Saturday, 6 March 2010 23:57 (sixteen years ago)

my dog's style is not cramped at all

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Saturday, 6 March 2010 23:58 (sixteen years ago)

My dog has a few major running issues and they are cramping the hell out of my style: lots of lunging at dogs, occasional lunging at people, stopping for no particular reason, racing for no particular reason, trying to eat canadian goose shit...

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 7 March 2010 00:11 (sixteen years ago)

he is a hardcore dingaling when it comes to socializing

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Sunday, 7 March 2010 00:17 (sixteen years ago)

my girl has been getting worse just lately. I think we're gonna get some behavior help.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 7 March 2010 00:22 (sixteen years ago)

I almost tripped over a dog today. He was lunging at another dog.

Jeff, Sunday, 7 March 2010 02:15 (sixteen years ago)

6 miles yesterday, 4 today. Feels good, need to keep going out. I really regret the amount I've ran in the last 3 months. It affected my endurance so much. I look at my november numbers and it just makes me sick to see how much I have been slacking off.

Jeff, Sunday, 7 March 2010 18:09 (sixteen years ago)

7.5 km today, 70 mins or so (really must get a stopwatch, or hell even a watch). felt fantastic, could have gone on for the 10k i think but that's another day's work. picked up a pair of fila for 20 quid that have made a huge difference.

Man, that's phenomenal. Woot!

So cold today. From the bottom of my frozen testicals, fuck you north wind.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Sunday, 7 March 2010 19:02 (sixteen years ago)

You know when you're defrosting your icebox and you reach right into the back of it and find like two shriveled sprouts and a mini-sausage encrusted in the ice? Well, that was me trying to take a whizz. Didn't know whether to call a doctor or a chef.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Sunday, 7 March 2010 19:04 (sixteen years ago)

i have literally never found those items in my icebox

Went out in the (very light) rain for a 14 mile muddy trail run. Nice pace throughout, finished in about 2-1/2 hours. Think I did 34 miles on the week...

rock!
i'm aiming for four jogs a week, about 3 to 4 miles a go.
if i can do that for the next two weeks, I'll be ready to start moving into second gear. Keep an eye on me plz.

forksclovetofu, Monday, 8 March 2010 05:13 (sixteen years ago)

10K in 49.03! Not far off the magic 48mins!

Dr.C, Monday, 8 March 2010 14:50 (sixteen years ago)

Since I've been slacking so much this year in order to make it to 1000 miles, I need to run essentially a 5K a day for the rest of the year. Or 21.8 miles a week. That's doable, but I need to get out there, like right now. During marathon training I'll be averaging 23 to 26 miles a week. I'm sure I'll have bigger weeks outside of that too.

Jeff, Monday, 8 March 2010 17:02 (sixteen years ago)

the weather is so amazing this week. i really don't have time to run today but i think i'll do it and miss out on sleep later, it's so gorgeous.

Maria, Monday, 8 March 2010 17:18 (sixteen years ago)

this year in order to make it to 1000 miles

This was my goal for a while, but right now it's looking like I'll easily hit 1,500. Was thinking about boosting my goal to 2,010 miles in 2010... but that may be a stretch. Opinions?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 8 March 2010 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

Go for it! What's the worse thing that could happen? You won't make it, but you'll still run a frak of a lot of miles.

Jeff, Monday, 8 March 2010 17:32 (sixteen years ago)

2000 miles in a year seems p doable considering how much u run

Lamp, Monday, 8 March 2010 17:34 (sixteen years ago)

2,000 miles is something like 40 miles a week. One long run at the weekend, 4 or 5 decent length runs during the week or something like that? Once your legs get used to it, it's not so bad (been averaging a little over that for the last couple of months), but it's just finding the time to do it every day that's more of an issue (have built it into my commute here, so it doesn't really conflict with anything else).

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Monday, 8 March 2010 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

2,000 miles is something like 40 miles a week.

It's 38.5 per week, specifically.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Monday, 8 March 2010 18:01 (sixteen years ago)

the problem there is just what if you get injured or burned out or something, that sort of distance would be hard for me to imagine catching up on!

Maria, Monday, 8 March 2010 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

I'm actually already playing catch-up, since I've averaged closer to 25 per week this year to date. But I won't force it, it should just come naturally given my training. Thinking about a 50 miler/100k later this year, which would boost me to 40-60 miles per week given a more intensive training schedule. So I'll just aim for whatever's coming up and train accordingly, and maybe the 2,010 will come along with it.

My knee is not right and hurting after I run on it, has been like that at least since I mentioned doing 10 miles upthread. Something at the front/top of the knee, when my weight is on it and when I go down the stairs post-run it feels like all the strength has gone out of it and I sort of limp. Got a half marathon at the end of the month and I think I'll probably be alright as a one-off but what does the collective wisdom of ilx recommend? Don't know if I should bother a doctor with it. I'm guessing stretches, less knackered shoes, mixing in cycling &c. will be good ideas but don't really know what's most important or how to heal quickest.

ogmor, Monday, 8 March 2010 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

rest rest rest. I'd also do some leg strengthening exercises, like leg lifts.

Jeff, Monday, 8 March 2010 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

tried to do two quick miles today, still took 22 mins. didn't have to stop at all, so that's a plus i guess.

just not sure how much w/ a half marathon in 3 weeks

ogmor, Monday, 8 March 2010 22:51 (sixteen years ago)

I hate that feeling. I had it when I started running again back in August and it feels like your knee is going to bend the wrong way and collapse in on itself.

Jeff, Monday, 8 March 2010 22:53 (sixteen years ago)

Rest for 3 days, then go for a short gentle run. If that still hurts a lot, have another 3 days off and repeat. If it feels alright, don't push it too hard too soon. Take some ibuprofen in the meantime, and wouldn't hurt to talk to someone in a running shop about your shoes either. Good luck with it though.

someone was telling me u shouldn't run with music but like a. I would get too bored to go for an hour or more w/o something to entertain me. b. music is great for getting me in the mood to go running (i only have to hear spaghetti circus and im actually running on the spot)

plax (ico), Saturday, 13 March 2010 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

i think the argument against music is OH NO you'll not be able to run without it which means no pro marathons for you but pSSSSSH who cares.
i have one more run to hit 4 for the week and today is the last day and it's POURING and freezing and I'm gonna need some serious encouragement.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 13 March 2010 18:09 (sixteen years ago)

still going and the lindstrom and christabelle album are amazine for getting me in the mood to get out on the road, once im puffing I need something chilled and ambient

plax (ico), Saturday, 13 March 2010 18:14 (sixteen years ago)

i rarely run without music. there goes my olympic dreams

Jeff, Saturday, 13 March 2010 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

i have a lot more going against my pro running career than a music-listening habit
* lol old
* not at all athletic by nature
* do not have desire to begin or complete a marathon or run til i puke

music it is
the only good argument against music safety when running alone/in the dark imo

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Saturday, 13 March 2010 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

whoops music IS safety

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Saturday, 13 March 2010 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

a. I would get too bored to go for an hour or more w/o something to entertain me.

Try forcing yourself out the door without it. Seems like torture at first, but once you've done 10+ runs with no music, you'll be fine -- and can have some pretty amazing self-conversations on those 3+ hour runs.

One bad thing about running with music is that I'm slowly coming to associate all my favourite songs with pain, exhaustion and generally feeling bad.

Have totally bolloxed myself here btw - got overambitious last Sunday, ran too hard up the hills and managed to do something weird to my calf. Dunno if it's a tear or what. Tried to run it off during the week, now it's even painful when I walk. Fuck! Added to which, I've just shagged my back digging on my veg plot. Not really ideal marathon preparation, oops.

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Saturday, 13 March 2010 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

These days I run without music if I'm running with my fiance, or on a trail (gotta stay alert for mtn. bikers!) or if my iPod just isn't charged. That's about 90% of the time... if none of those variables are in play, then I'll run with music.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 13 March 2010 20:39 (sixteen years ago)

I've just shagged my back digging

Skimmed this as "I've just shagged my dick" hahaha.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 13 March 2010 20:40 (sixteen years ago)

I'm sure I would have done that to myself too this week if I could have managed it :(

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Saturday, 13 March 2010 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

Soooo, I bought running gear and it's been sitting in the store bag for a week. To get me started I need to find a way to actually enjoy it, even if that means less than optimum cardio/stamina/whatever. What are your top tips for getting started nice n easy?

ljubljana, Saturday, 13 March 2010 22:22 (sixteen years ago)

Run a little, walk a little, don't go too far or too fast too soon. Choose a nice sunny day and a nice flat route. Coercing a friend into going with you might help as well.
