xap isn't it more like jacob's been fannying around for 300 years (at least, considering the black rock) and MiB got his work done in 3, starting with the crash of oceanic six?
― sonderangerbot, Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:29 (sixteen years ago)
I really don't feel like loading 1,900 messages and figuring out where the hell you guys started talking about the newest one.

if these characters are just pawns of these two dudes and we know they can't be killed, then it sort of kills most of the tension stone dead. If people are just running along their preordained tracks then... who cares?
Yeah, and not the only thing killing tension. Like everyone is just sort of coming and going from the temple and...I dunno, nothing feels as desperate like it did in earlier seasons, which for being the last and final season is sorta sucking.
― probably a sock!! (╓abies), Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:33 (sixteen years ago)
xpost, oh cool thx
actually, wait now: MiB can probably look like ANY dead person, which is useful for being scary and w/e, but not useful for actual subterfuge because, you know, ppl are inclined to be leery of people they know to be deceased. esp when they can see the dead body, right there or w/e.
his plan to be john locke hinges on one crucial detail: smokey doesn't reanimate the dead, he just assumes their form. so, after ajira crashed, ben et al assume that locke has just been reanimated by the magic of the island, and not a spectre, because they haven't seen his corpse. you'd think ben would be wise to this possibility. but: they trudge off to the temple, ben falls through the floor, locke goes to get rope, and THEN smokey shows up. moreover, as alex, he accuses ben of wanting to kill new locke, and orders him to do w/e he says. this seems to be enough to trick ben into believing that locke is actually a reanimated corpse and not smokey.

and maybe this is just a continuity flaw, but smokey HAS appeared as people that never made it to the island, dead or alive: namely, the dudes from Eko's past.
― nitzer ebbebe (gbx), Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:35 (sixteen years ago)
not "continuity" flaw, but you know
thought the dude's from Eko's past were in the beechcraft?
― all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:37 (sixteen years ago)
Oh yeah, I was always thinking smokey appeared as the dead dudes on the little plane, but he showed up as Eko's brother, right?
― probably a sock!! (╓abies), Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:39 (sixteen years ago)
Eko staggers through the jungle and collapses. The black smoke Monster is seen and heard darting through the background. A Nigerian man (Emeka) appears, and throws a machete at Eko. The machete lands in a tree next to Eko's head. Eko pulls the machete from the tree and turns to face three men: one with his throat cut, one with a severed arm and one (Emeka) who is cowering before Eko and begging for his life. Eko is about to plunge the machete into Emeka, but Emeka changes into Altar Boy (Daniel) who puts a finger to his lips ("Shhh", just like Walt to Shannon) and says, "Confess." Eko drops the machete and runs. He arrives at a river and drinks from it

How come Christian was able to appear to Jack off-island?
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:40 (sixteen years ago)
maybe it was jacob!
― nitzer ebbebe (gbx), Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:42 (sixteen years ago)
How many 'gamesmen' are there?
There's at least 3 by my count:
JacobMIB/EsauReferee (kid in forest)
Possible others:Smokey (as possibly distinct from MIB, like a helper dog)Walt(!!!)
― Philip Nunez, Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:52 (sixteen years ago)
I thought off-island Christian appearing to Jack (was it in the hospital?) was due to Jack going kerrazy. I think there's been a deliberate blurring of the line between "hallucinations" and Smokey dressing up - initially we thought most sightings were the characters' hallucinations (particularly Hurley with Dave, I guess, and also with Locke's special LSD Hallucination Paste) but now we know what Smokey can do we are assuming he was all of them. I think it's probably a mix of the two.
― Not the real Village People, Thursday, 4 March 2010 19:56 (sixteen years ago)
there might have been a bit of hallucination involved with Eko seeing nigerians guys also
― sonderangerbot, Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:00 (sixteen years ago)
Hurley's Perfect English Jin hallucination looking more like time travelling ghost, though. Means he dies soon?
― Philip Nunez, Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:02 (sixteen years ago)
The Eko v Smokey thing seems more important in light of what we now know - presumably Smokey killed Eko for not being evil enough, and spared Ben for being an evil little shit he could rely on.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:07 (sixteen years ago)
how did ben summon smokey from within the dharma camp again?
― shite new answers (cutty), Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:08 (sixteen years ago)
and doesn't that conflict with the system in place of keeping smokey out? i wish there was a marvin candle video on smokey.
Multiple smokeys.
― Philip Nunez, Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:12 (sixteen years ago)
oh god
― archer's goon (tpp), Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:16 (sixteen years ago)
i'm almost certain they had no idea where they were going with smokey at the time of eko's death. it was a serious low point for the show and if i remember correctly that episode was ropey as s**t i think it was new writers.
― archer's goon (tpp), Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:17 (sixteen years ago)
i think the fence wasn't operable when ben summoned him. how he summoned him though, i don't know
― rahni, Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:17 (sixteen years ago)
ben goes into a secret hole in the wall in one of the dharma buildings and flushes the smoketoilet
― archer's goon (tpp), Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:24 (sixteen years ago)
rewatching S2 its a real shame they killed off eko character given the direction they're taking the show
― archer's goon (tpp), Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:26 (sixteen years ago)
The insinuation was that somehow the water was keeping the smoke at bay, and that little smoketoilet alcove looked a lot like the underground area where Ben confronted the ghost version of Alex to be "judged." I kind of assumed they were somehow connected (physically) and smokey literally can't pass through water.
Maybe there's something to that? It can't go through water, or across ash.
― mh, Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:29 (sixteen years ago)
ben summoning the smokemonster is definitely one of the things they need to resolve sooner rather than later
― archer's goon (tpp), Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:32 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, they had to swim underwater to get to the bomb area too, which looked like smokeytunnels to me
― CLOWNSTAPE (jjjusten), Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:33 (sixteen years ago)
well considering what was said in the preview...
― shite new answers (cutty), Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:33 (sixteen years ago)
xp
the whole island is SURROUNDED by water to keep smokey on the ISLAND OMG
Not being able to go across waterwould also explain smokeylocke being trapped on the island
― CLOWNSTAPE (jjjusten), Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:34 (sixteen years ago)
Ha xpost
so if jughead sunk the island, what would happen to smokey?
MAKES U THINK
― all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:35 (sixteen years ago)
Maybe each of the Others' leaders represents an element that they can block smokey from accessing. Dogen is earth, Ben is water, Locke was air, and...
Oh wait, I'm confusing this with Captain Planet.
― mh, Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:37 (sixteen years ago)
loved this episode! mainly because of the last 20 mins (and the fight at the start). huge lol at Ben backing away slowly from Sayid. and woah they've really upped the smokemonster budget this season huh?
killing dogan was for the best - constantly being undermined by noobs. when even claire is retorting "speak english!" at you you know you might as well give up. thought he was cool and yet so useless. gonna watch it again now.
― mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 4 March 2010 20:37 (sixteen years ago)
I would love to see Hurley leading the 815 kids in an epic water balloon fight against Locke.

haha yeah, i have to agree about when Claire stared Dogen down, he really had just lost all his juice by then

I heard someone say that there are 108 stitches on a baseball yesterday and I was like ugh come on man.
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 March 2010 21:12 (sixteen years ago)
well i mean
― max, Thursday, 4 March 2010 21:12 (sixteen years ago)
i looked that up
then i looked up the significance of the number 108 in 'lost' because tbh by this point old history mayne's memory is pretty facacta.
― the archetypal ghetto hustler (history mayne), Thursday, 4 March 2010 21:20 (sixteen years ago)
xpost:
re jack's vision of christian being just a hallucination - i've always believed that scene to be of a piece with hurley's visitations from the dead during his stay at the asylum. and as hurley will passionately attest to, he *isn't* crazy and those really *were* dead people coming to see him.
― phantompenguin, Thursday, 4 March 2010 21:26 (sixteen years ago)
tbh i think we're inventing these "rules" of the dead more than the writers are
― Nhex, Thursday, 4 March 2010 21:31 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i think ultimately they're going to prove much simpler than people have made them out to be.
― phantompenguin, Thursday, 4 March 2010 21:34 (sixteen years ago)
Dogen is earth, Ben is water, Locke was air, and...
Hurley is Heart.
