All the folks who post here after every episode that they don't care about the characters--we get it.

see but i do care about the characters and thats what is pissing me off - the flash sideways removes all our context and background for the characters, because obviously their backstory is now totally different. which would be ok if the majority of time in the FS wasnt spent slowly rolling out really vague background details instead of advancing any real progression. i mean am i supposed to have some emoto connection to FS Sayid just because he looks like the same guy, despite having them wait half the episode to clarify that he has spent the last 12 years nebulously doing "good things" to make up for all the bad stuff? in which case, he's a totally different character than OG Sayid, and why bother to care about him and his deal?

for dissatisfied folks here is some deep analysis, this guy was recommended back in maybe the S5 thread and he catches lots of shit I miss, here is one example:

We're seeing a very distinct pattern in the LAX timeline, and here it is in a nutshell: the circle can be broken. People can change. Mistakes don't need to be repeated, over and over again. Some examples so far:

* Kate Austin is a fugitive on the run, only looking out for herself. She glances into a garage mirror and... BANG! Kate heads back to bring pregnant Claire her stuff, help her through false labor, and befriend her during a major crisis... all at great risk to her personal safety. Cue Claire's credit cards and a makeover shopping spree.

* John Locke is the same angry and defiant cripple he's always been. Still struggling against his paralysis he calls Jack's number, looks into a mirror and... BANG! Locke suddenly hangs up the phone and embraces his condition. Helen loves and accepts him for who he is, there's a nice tearful hug, and everything is unicorns and rainbows.

* Jack Shephard is a workaholic surgeon neglecting a son he only sees once a month. He looks in the mirror and... well, you get the picture. With some help from his mother Jack realizes the error of his ways, eases up on young David, and opens his loving arms to his son. Time for ice cream and some hair-rumpling.

This is some exciting news, actually. It may be proof that Jacob is right. People don't always have to fight, corrupt, and destroy.

i mean in a show with like a billion loose ends already, they really decided it would be a good idea to create ANOTHER alternate timeline which not only seems to have a rudderless future, but also has no established backstory for any of the characters? in the last season? thats just straight up stupid

I think that baseball story he told was another misdirection. It's not when Dogen dies that the smokey protection is lifted but when the baseball bobs out of his grasp.

Gambit is a much better match for Sawyer than Wolverine aside from the Logan/Scott/Jean love triangle

I am surprised by the lack of enthusiasm for this episode, I thought it was really fucking good. Just v exciting and of course the plot was moved forward, this ep clearly set the tone for the rest of the series, a war is about to happen.

I thought they really introduced the idea of Smokey being utterly evil quite well, just the whole tone of the episode seemed to lurch into something more sinister than usual. There's something really unsettling about seeing Sayid sort of in thrall to Smokey in the jungle that time. Sure it's all a bit overblown (hi dere catch a falling star) but after 5 seasons I feel I bought into this show ages ago.

Anyone else think Smokey is maent to be more powerful here? There were some louder sounding roars than usual.

Also I can't help but feel Jack is going to replace Jacob in the next few eps.

But yeah overall thought this episode was great.

maybe that's what Secret Redemption Sayid IS COUNTING ON...

i loved this ep and have high hopes for the rest of the season

in order to really get into this 'epic war' storyline it'd be nice to know a bit more about
the two sides fighting each other + what they are fighting about:

in particular would love to know:
- who/what is jacob and what does it actually mean for jack to replace jacob?
- who/what is smokey and how does he plan to get off the island
- how can "jacob's team" possibly compete with smokey + his goons?

obvs we don't need all these answers right now but i think they need to give us a bit more in the next ep or so

-dogen said smokey would kill every living thing on the island. why/how/to what end? also, i was under the impression before that the events on the island threatened the entire world. is smokey going to try and get to the mainland (like jurassic park) or is it back to just being an island problem?
-to what extent can smokey control kate/sayid etc? is he controlling them or have they just become evil and thus more likely to make the choices that benefit him?

The Jack/Kate dynamic is like bad Claremont writing, Sayid right now is like Mark Millar/Frank Miller Wolverine with a touch of the "every woman I love dies" thing.

Claire's acting as evil again was truly dire. It seems they couldn't make Claire evil without also making her EVEN STUPIDER. And Sayid's face for his version of evil is as if they'd asked him to play a sex offender.

I was wondering whether anything just flies now with Jacob and his magic island powers. First, only things on the island were really affected, people healed, time moved. Now we know he was making deals to bring some dude's kid back from the dead?

The ghost of Jacob appeared, and told Hurley that it is very, very important that he bring Sayid to the temple so that Sayid can die, be reborn, and then help kill all those people Jacob brought to the island.

He told Hurley that it was the only way to save Sayid - I think the real motivation was just to get the main crew to the temple. Of course, they all went to the temple just to discover that none of them actually wanted to be there (too bad for Kate!), which is pretty much in line with Jacob's other dickish manipulations.

the kid is a piano prodigy in another timeline so jacob did sorta come through for dogen?

just watching again, was dogen actually lying about the knife thing? i'm confused by the fact that fake locke does "talk to" sayid before he stabs him, even if he only says "hello sayid" or something. is that whole thing about the knife just as fake locke/sayid said it was, a setup to have flocke kill sayid?

I think Sayid waited too long, Dogen was very clear about not letting Flocke talk or it would be "too late". After that I think it was just Smokey lying/manipulating Sayid.

Sayid physically and spatially could not have killed Flocke before Flocke said hello, though.
