Not only is it a painting, it's a watercolor. Wish I could see it up close, I've never seen a photo-realistic watercolor before.

So's this one

yeah, she's nuts ... haven't seen these in person, but i'm willing to bet that they don't look half as great.

kurt broder (dr g), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to repost Kurt Kauper, he probably deserves a better picture

re: getting exposed to this stuff, in my case I see much more art in magazines and on the internet (gallery webpages, art blogs, show reviews, etc.) than in reality, unfortunately.

Penguin USA Paper, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

dean, that's gorgeous.

i bet this is what everyone asks you but how long did it take to paint and do you only work on one thing at a time?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

the stephen bush and roland hicks are lovely.

Avedon's American West exhibit just reopened in Ft. Worth, I hope I can make it this weekend.

I am pleased Fiona Rae got a mention here - she's been among my three or so favourite living artists for a long time.

I'd really like to see her stuff in person.

Penguin USA Paper, Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

She was the first artist for whom I rang a bell to be let into a tiny gallery, as it happens. The gallery had a total of two paintings on show - not just two by her, that was all they had. She came to my attention when she was nominated for the Turner Prize many years back.

thanks. i would say that that painting took around 30 hours or so. i tend to work on many things at once and i usually start new batches of paintings every few months regardless of how far i am along on older ones. it's better to have as many choices as possible so you can manage your work flow and make it fit with your (busy) schedule. i have no intention of showing work for the next few months or so due to a work commitment, so i can really work at my own pace assuming that i have the time.

dean

can i ask a question, w/o seeming like an asshole?
why do you engage with photorealism, and narrative painting, both formally and poltically?

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 10 October 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

what do you do, dean, that you wind up finding all these different artists?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 10 October 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

i am a painter, but that's a very solitary act and doesn't help me see much daylight. i find out about these folks by reading magazines / websites, going to galleries, hanging out with mr. penguin usa paper, plotting, scheming, etc, etc, etc.

I've seen an ad that looked exactly like that Terry Rodgers painting (minus bare breasts), only it was a photograph for something.

I wish that Delia Brown were as prolific as Rodgers.

so then you're in LA too, dean? i think so anyway. anything coming up? doesn't assume vivid astro focus have something that opens... uhh... today? at moca? o i guess i could look... gallerywise though i never know where to go in LA other than, you know, just kinda scampering around chinatown.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 10 October 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i'm a westsider. shameful, i know. don't know too much about the LA shows at the moment. bergamot is poor, but neil farber opens at heller on saturday. rebecca campbell closed in venice on saturday and was great. chinatown was boring except for some oval shaped photos at black dragon (?) linked upthread - i can't remember the artist's name - and a couple of small works in the backroom of acuna hansen. the shore/fisher piece at QED in Culver City is AMAZING and must be seen. don't know much about the other CC galleries. Mr. Penguin can probably give you more info.

Magin Johnson's magical AIDS thrfit store (dr g), Monday, 10 October 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

assume vivid astro focus has an installation at the big Ecstasy show at the Geffen. It requires 3-d glasses and is pretty funny.

The show in general is good:

anthony - the book! How goes the book? Do you need us to whip you with nettles to stimulate your skull custard, or chain you to your keyboard with your knees roped together? ILE's services in that direction are very reasonably priced, I hear.
