buying new iphone after 12 months, tho tempting, seems ultimately insane

saaberonixx (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 23 February 2010 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

was going to buy iphone tomorrow (black, 3gs, 16gig) - should I really not? Also, I can get it for 129 quid - if new super duper model comes in June - will it have substantial premium?

problem chimp (Porkpie), Monday, 1 March 2010 21:12 (sixteen years ago)

just bought an iphone today (black, 3G, 8GB) because it was only $50... now hopefully the new data plan won't bankrupt me.

sofatruck, Monday, 1 March 2010 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

Porkpie, the new one will likely be available at the same price the current one is...129 quid seems pretty cheap for one, though, is that with contract?

noted schloar (dyao), Tuesday, 2 March 2010 00:15 (sixteen years ago)

tweetdeck, tweetie, or twitteriffic?

sofatruck, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

Tweetie works well for me. Didn't think much of Tweetdeck.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 16:58 (sixteen years ago)

Tweetie, but I miss some of the features of Twitteriffic.

Jeff, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

tweetie probably easier on the eye for simple use, but tweetdeck is crucial if you want to have keyword searches/alerts, etc.

Picked up Hipstamatic after seeing Chris Hardwick rave about it on Nerdist.com, played around with it last night:

Enjoying it so far.

My upgrade doesn't come around til August, but I'll probably spring for it. Hopefully I'll be more-than-unemployed and can actually afford such things.

Sex Sexual (kingfish), Tuesday, 2 March 2010 18:24 (sixteen years ago)

I hated how in tweetdeck it seemed like there were too many ways to do the same function.

Jeff, Tuesday, 2 March 2010 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

Just bought that hipstamatic app. Awesome!

I don't get it.

etaeoe, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 01:20 (sixteen years ago)

they're trying to shame Apple into approving Opera Mini for the phone. There aren't any other web browsers on the store because the rules say you can't have anything that interprets code, and browers run JavaScript. Opera Mini doesn't run javascript, so there's a chance it'll get in.

Hope it does; Safari is way too slow on gprs and Opera mini was hella fast even on my old Nokia

stet, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 02:35 (sixteen years ago)

Oh I hope it does, I love & use Opera exclusively otherwise.

reeder 2 is impressive, i'm liking it better than byline.

rafsan (rahni), Monday, 29 March 2010 19:25 (sixteen years ago)

I like it too but the micro sized icons is pissing me off. Also I'd like to know how many unread I have when browsing the unread posts.

Jeff, Monday, 29 March 2010 19:33 (sixteen years ago)

Also, I want more contrast. Changing it to high contrast doesn't make much difference at all.

goddamnit how do i shot google/iphone syncing. when i first set it up it all worked fine. then the mail app stopped working - couldn't see any messages - but the calendar still showed my google calendar events. just deleted and recreated my account (ON IPHONE), now the mail works but the calendar doesn't :/

any hints or tips - i have 'push' turned off and 'fetch' set to 'manually' btw.

check out http://www.nuevasync.com/

I have an ipod touch and nuevasync gets my calendar sync'd up really easy. My gmail account is an IMAP gmail apps account, so I don't need to sync mail.

dan selzer, Monday, 24 May 2010 14:02 (sixteen years ago)

yeah mine is imap too. but, i've just rediscovered, i'd set up the previous one to use google sync, which requires creating it as a microsoft exchange account. tried that again and it's working, for now. thx anyway.

Not sure if I should install 4.0 on my iPhone 3G. Sounds like it will make it super-slow. Anyone try this yet?

schwantz, Monday, 21 June 2010 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

Not sure how this applies to iPhone but in OS X major updates generally speed up old hardware.

WEB SHERIFF (LOLK), Monday, 21 June 2010 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

anyone know what happens if you go to 4 on a jailbroken phone?

flapjackin (gbx), Monday, 21 June 2010 18:41 (sixteen years ago)

Not sure how this applies to iPhone but in OS X major updates generally speed up old hardware.

That is the wrongest thing I have ever read on the internet, and I just came from reading Armond White's Toy Story 3 review.

MAYBE this was a little bit true for Snow Leopard, but every other OS update from Apple just serves to slow down my old hardware.
