Juliet's alt-consciousness appeared to be leaking back into her real consciousness just before she died. If that was to happen to, say, John Locke, it could be interesting.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 February 2010 11:27 (sixteen years ago)

sorry, what happened with juliet again?

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 18 February 2010 11:28 (sixteen years ago)

She was suddenly all "hey we should get coffee some time", like she was somewhere different entirely. Then after her death she told Sawyer, through Miles, that "it worked".

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 February 2010 11:31 (sixteen years ago)

that's true.

id prefer it if there was some tangible reason for the six being the six, for being candidates. not exactly "why these people". but what do jin and sun bring to the table exactly? that, say, another major cast member didn't. their kid? i can't even remember what happened to their kid.

sharter the unstoppable ilx machine (history mayne), Thursday, 18 February 2010 11:36 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe the alt-timeline destiny is their actual destiny and something that Jacob or MIB has been desperately trying to prevent?

what i thought as well. jacob most likely. as far as the kate flashsideways it seemed to show her way of finding peace or whatever but i'm not sure as to how the theory works with lockes flashsideways

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 18 February 2010 11:43 (sixteen years ago)

neither jacob nor MIB can be particularly invested in these people's domestic happiness or whatever. jacob wanted them to *do* something. that thing not being done must have consequences beyond locke getting on with his pops or w/e.

sharter the unstoppable ilx machine (history mayne), Thursday, 18 February 2010 11:44 (sixteen years ago)

Interesting how Jacob tells Kate to stop stealing things, and in the alt timeline she returns Claire's stolen purse

Brakhage, Thursday, 18 February 2010 17:30 (sixteen years ago)

using a stolen car tho

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 18 February 2010 17:33 (sixteen years ago)

That's true, she should have returned that - in the alt timeline she is 'the gunpoint borrower'

I was wondering though if Jacob actually affects the characters in the new timeline at the point he talks to them, so that their futures are different from that point on. Locke's life appears radically different where Kate's not so much.

At some point they're going to have to address how the heck Ben is alive in the alt - by all rights he should be dead in 1977, right?

Brakhage, Thursday, 18 February 2010 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

lol @ the best week ever recap: "Basically, if this Jacob replacement candidate thing does end up being the crux of this final season, it means the entire show Lost has been about a group of tropical island castaways being filmed competing to win a title."

Survivor: Magical Island.

this show is so fucked up. i don't even bother asking questions anymore. i just hold on tight and hope that i understand at least half of what is going on.

So you have chosen option one of Flocke's 'Three Choices'. (the other two being, Keep Guessing or Stop Watching).

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 18 February 2010 18:11 (sixteen years ago)

A weird detail is Claire's sonogram was dated Oct 22 2004, which is a month after 815 was supposed to arrive in LA. They might not have arrived on the 815 at all. Or it could just be a continuity error.

Brakhage, Thursday, 18 February 2010 19:44 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I think the writers clarified that that was a continuity error

sleeve, Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

Do they have twitter or something? You guys have seemingly instant access to their creative team!

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

lostpedia, duh

sleeve, Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:32 (sixteen years ago)

"Basically, if this Jacob replacement candidate thing does end up being the crux of this final season, it means the entire show Lost has been about a group of tropical island castaways being filmed competing to win a title."

Fwiw ABC approached JJ Abrams with the concept for Lost, they wanted an action/drama version of Survivor.

ô_o (Nicole), Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

fuck this 'chosen one' shit

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 18 February 2010 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

they are all pretty suited for sitting alone in a cave for a couple of hundred years "protecting" an island tho. because they all have terrible human skills. i would say except for hurley but then again he can talk to dead people and would probably be fine

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 18 February 2010 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I think the writers clarified that that was a continuity error

Ah that's cool. Where'd you see that?

Brakhage, Thursday, 18 February 2010 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

on lostpedia but it seems they've changed their minds a bit now

The date in Claire's sonogram contains an error and a clue according to a post by Gregg Nations on The Fuselage. One interpretation is that it shows the incorrect month (10-22-2004) and should be 9-22-2004 (September rather than October) and the clue concerns the year, i.e. 2004. (Nations does not refer to the time at all.) When asked whether the "10" was the clue and the "04" the error, he replied that they were not.

sleeve, Thursday, 18 February 2010 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

As cool as this inside dope info is, I kinda wish the writers were all sequestered, jury-duty style, drinking coffee and pacing back and forth, blowing up at each other now and then until the finale.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 18 February 2010 21:50 (sixteen years ago)

I was wondering though if Jacob actually affects the characters in the new timeline at the point he talks to them, so that their futures are different from that point on. Locke's life appears radically different where Kate's not so much.

Nah Kate was like 10 years old when Jacob found her.

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 February 2010 21:56 (sixteen years ago)

Kate doesn't seem to be terribly different in the sideways timeline, but as a personality she seemed a little less desperate, more in control. In the video podcast, Lilly said that the Kate there seemed to relish her role as a fugitive more, as an "adrenaline junkie". This makes sense since she doesn't actually kill her father in that timeline, but some random guy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, so her standard Lost daddy issues/guilt isn't as present.

Nhex, Thursday, 18 February 2010 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

The date in Claire's sonogram contains an error and a clue

Oh man, every time I think I know what the hell is going on ...

Loved scared shitless Richard, please more full-on panic from people expecting to get dashed against rocks by MIB.

Ilana's collecting the ashes, which I thought would happen, but I have no idea how those ashes magically become the circles of ash used throughout the show. Maybe the timeline's been violated so many times that the laws of cause and effect no longer apply.

has anyone even discussed who that young chappy that mib saw was? is it a young jacob? aaron? i assumed young jacob but he did refer to jacob as "him".

I see what this is (Local Garda), Thursday, 18 February 2010 22:17 (sixteen years ago)

i don't even wanna go there. to me the kid kinda seems to speak for some third neutral part (maybe actually the island itself?) but who the hell knows

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 18 February 2010 22:18 (sixteen years ago)

IMO him=Sawyer, ie, you can't kill the "candidates."

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 18 February 2010 22:21 (sixteen years ago)

The fact that he wasn't seen by Richard, but was by Sawyer, could mean that the bloodsoaked one was some sort of projection, and the other one a real boy. It does remind me of Jacob's 'Jin won't be able to see me'. Could be only candidates can see projections? If Jin can't see Jacob then maybe the candidate's Sun.

Brakhage, Thursday, 18 February 2010 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

Meaning that both times the child's a projection that only candidates can see.

Brakhage, Thursday, 18 February 2010 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

I only learned later by looking up the kid that his arms were bloody in the first scene, what the hell.

also check out the casting call info if you like teasers

sleeve, Thursday, 18 February 2010 22:31 (sixteen years ago)

thought it was aaron...1. he looked just like claire and 2. they made such a point last week to remind us who aaron is. not sure why he would be whatever age he appeared to not-locke and sawyer though.

did anyone catch some of those other names on the walls? i saw but didn't recognize: mattingly, o'toole, rourke, martin...i bet these are people who were on the black rock. also, littleton (as in, claire) was crossed out!

did you mean: fart blasters? (nickalicious), Thursday, 18 February 2010 22:34 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I think she died when the rocket or grenade or whatever hit her house, was just zombified after that.

sleeve, Thursday, 18 February 2010 22:40 (sixteen years ago)

or maybe she is just no longer a candidate

did find it odd that James didn't look for Kate's name or ask about it

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 18 February 2010 23:02 (sixteen years ago)

btw that cave scene was the dumbest thing they have ever done. "reyes... that's hugo right?" cut to flash of jacob touch "ford... that's me right?" cut to jacob etc etc

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 18 February 2010 23:17 (sixteen years ago)

did anyone catch some of those other names on the walls?

Check the Rotten Tomatoes forum link I posted for info about the names.

yeah hated this, eats up valuable seconds! the 'previously' recaps are bad enough.

mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 18 February 2010 23:31 (sixteen years ago)

Can't believe they still put that thing saying 'L O S T' up there as well. Like, we all know what it's called!

Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 February 2010 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

yeah was dire...those jacob scenes were like two eps ago!

Just imagining if they did this every time a previous episode was referenced...

mdskltr (blueski), Friday, 19 February 2010 00:09 (sixteen years ago)

re the scene where f locke trips, falls flat, and looks up to see the back of the boy's feet - correct me if i'm wrong, but i think the cinematography here is mimicking a similar scene from season one (which i mentioned upthread) where jack is chasing christian through the jungle.

also, the bloody image of the boy threw me off a bit because, back in the day, the blood imagery was used to represent the island giving spiritual guidance to people, ie locke and eko. except back then we thought there was one island and one faction representing the island's interests, smoke monster included.

based on the plot description for next week and the likelihood of it being a jack's episode... i'm not overly enthusiastic.

phantompenguin, Friday, 19 February 2010 01:08 (sixteen years ago)

please no plot descriptions!
