Smokey Cam was awesome
really satisfying episode. the sideways-ben-john meeting was unsettling and bizarre, but in a good way.

no jack, no kate = my kind of lost
they make you eat your peas before you get your pudding. are the episodes actually good/bad/good/bad/etc or does it just feel that way.

Tonight was my first night to watch Lost on my new big LCD television. I'm still trying to get used to just how different television is in HD. Even Lost was unsettling in HD. Enjoyed this one much better than the last two. It seems like we're getting "Somewhere." After seeing Ben as a teacher are we to assume that everything that did happen on the island never happened in this new timeline?
― Jacob Sanders, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 05:00 (sixteen years ago)
is it significant that they didn't show kate's name on jacob's cave ceiling? she got a tap from him like the others, i believe.
^^cosign times a million. when jack and kate are the focus of an episode, i find my enjoyment of the show detaches and becomes kind of meta, like "oh great, let's see what jack's crying about this week." but locke and ben have enough gravitas to make questionable writing seem really, really compelling. like ben's speech over locke's grave, that was awesome.

the numbers are back
― ere, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:25 (sixteen years ago)
i think ilana is/was jacob's wife
4 - Locke8 - Reyes15 - Ford16 - Jarrah23 - Shephard42 - Kwon (could be either Jin or Sun)
And:
1. Stay until you're 'crossed out'.2. Take over and become the new 'Jacob'.3. Leave.

Also there is a creepy kid running around the island who is seemingly above Jacob and Smokey on the food chain, which is weird.
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:28 (sixteen years ago)
42 - Kwon (could be either Jin or Sun)
start of this season lax difference in names matters now?

― Jacob Sanders, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:58 (sixteen years ago)
The numbers thing doesn't make any sense. Does that mean that Jacob, at some point, touched every name on that board, and eventually crossed everyone else out? Can people be crossed out before they arrive on the island? If Jacob likes those six numbers so damned much, why did he wasted everyone else's time?
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 08:00 (sixteen years ago)
I assume Smokey and Jacob are equivalent since they balance each other (like the white and black rocks on the scale), and the kid seemed like he was reminding Smokey what the rules were.

he's been doing it for centuries and got down to these numbers and started broadcasting them?

on the wall:TROUPE
love this retcon that the season 1 anagram names (Ethan Rom = Other Man, Gary Troup = Purgatory) were both pseudonyms.

this was such a fantastic episode - didn't feel like a single scene was wasted.
need to think through theories some more but noticed that Austen = not on the wall.

I'm thinking that choice #3--leave the island with me--entails killing all the other candidates first.
In the alt-timeline--things seem to be working out a lot better for the characters without the pressure of Jacob's influence, the island wanting stuff to happen, etc. But does that mean that whatever was important about the island is gone and the world is going to end or something?
The little boy actor resembled Jacob a lot. I'd say he's Jacob's ghost, appearing to MIB in an earlier form. Perhaps back when Smokey was human he knew Boy Jacob.
Leaving out Kate from the wall kind of annoys me--since we know Jacob touched her. Maybe she disappointed him by going against what he told her and continuing to steal stuff.
More and more it seems like Jacob's original list (the one used to yank people like Cindy from the beach) was a kind of rapture. Taking the "good people" to relative safety amongst the Others, and leaving the bad people to get ordered around by the "Candidates" and eventually killed by flaming arrows. The first we ever heard about Jacob was that Jack was not on his list--because he was on a different list.
― President Keyes, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 11:05 (sixteen years ago)
Jacob often is associated with water-- both of his hideouts (the Foot and the cave) are right next to the ocean, we see him cooking fish, the healing water at the Temple.
When Ben summoned Smokey he had to drain the water first.
― President Keyes, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 11:10 (sixteen years ago)
seems likely that a showdown is shaping up btw locke/sawyer and the rest of the gang, which is bad-ass
― max, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 11:15 (sixteen years ago)
kid could be a young jacob couldnt he? i mean in terms of look/coloring--or also aaron--or... both
― max, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 11:16 (sixteen years ago)
Do we know where Ben was at the time of the Incident? Was he still with the Others? Unless there was a cut scene of him being returned to Dharma and loaded onto the sub. Since he becomes a teacher in the alt-line, it could mean that Jughead didn't cause the island to sink in '77.
― President Keyes, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 11:27 (sixteen years ago)
kid saying "know the rules, you can't kill him" was very similar to the ben/widmore confrontation. but was he talking about sawyer or jacob?
― abanana, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 11:28 (sixteen years ago)
I wonder if Locke=4 on the wall was a Jacob fakeout move & Kate is actually #4.
― President Keyes, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 11:33 (sixteen years ago)
great episode!
trying to correlate the names on the ceiling in this episode with "jacob's list" from the first few series is fun but essentially hopeless. if they had really known where they were going with the jacob character we should have seen him visit the characters in the flashbacks of the first 3 seasons rather than the last episode of season 5.
one thing that surprised me was that smokelocke had to check with sawyer if he could see the kid. i've always assumed that any apparitions on the island were somehow down to smokey but clearly not if smokey wasn't sure if he was seeing one! does this mean that christian is not a smokey apparition (what i always assumed) after all?
― david cam'ron (tpp), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 11:39 (sixteen years ago)
jacob's earlier list didn't have jack on it. so.
― abanana, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 11:44 (sixteen years ago)
In "Par Avion", Mikhail states that Kate is not on the list because she is "flawed"; Sayid is not on the list because he is "weak and frightened"; and Locke is not on the list because he is angry.
lol
― david cam'ron (tpp), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 11:46 (sixteen years ago)

Not sure about this. When have they ever revealed stuff earlier when they could wait to do so later? I think Jacob and the "candidate" thing have been in the planning all along.
Jacob's original list probably didn't have any of the "candidates" on it, since they were supposed to play out some drama on the island, proving their leadership, worthiness, etc.
And if Richard didn't know what Candidates were then I doubt Mikhail did.
― President Keyes, Wednesday, 17 February 2010 11:48 (sixteen years ago)
sure i mean that that point in time it was ben who was supposed to be getting this info from jacob but its been revealed that he never even spoke to him so...
― david cam'ron (tpp), Wednesday, 17 February 2010 11:49 (sixteen years ago)
*at that
That dialogue between Jack and Dogen about why Dogen doesn't speak English (to put a distance between himself & those he gives orders to) is like training Jack to become some dude who orders people around by sending out lists from beneath a foot.
