Lost Season 6 - RE: LA X

well to me, exciting*=generates discussion and the alternate timeline stuff did a whole lot of that! I guess the Flocke stuff was essentially revealed at the end of last season but we all know one Lost nothing is ever official until they specifically spell it out (I'm sorry you had to see me like that/Nice to see you out of chains/etc). Do you find there are a lot of episodes that are that exciting? I feel there are only a few a season that make me actually sit forward and bulge my eyes.. the Constant being the one that comes to mind immediately..

This really felt like one of those ponderous captivity episodes at the start of season three. I enjoyed Miles's zing on Hurley though.

The Sayid and Claire on-island stuff is the only thing from this episode really worth discussing. I think the Others were testing Sayid to try and work out whether it was actually possible to kill him (probable answer = no). But I assume at some point soon Sayid will be able to go hang out with Christian Shepherd in the cabin.

Other question - do we think Christian's been dunked in the temple pool as well, seeing as they never found his body?

Not sure whether Sayid can be possessed/contaminated by Smokey, given Hurley did pretty much exactly what Jacob told him to. Unless it wasn't actually Jacob.

Where did Sawyer get a wedding ring? Did it he order it via the submarine?

x-post no the thing there is, imo, the pool was turned green when they got to it, probably because jacob was dead? so that's why the cure on sayid didn't work. or even if that's not why, the cure on sayid didn't work as planned.

nah I don't care about her either. "Because it happened to .... your sister!" and the final shot of Claire was a weak reveal.

She drives to a random body shop and has the vaguely criminal-looking mechanic pop her cuffs. (The guy was played by Jeff Kober, known to some [well, me] as the evil magic-peddling demon Rack in the sixth season of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” What a random, recognizable face for such a bit part. I kept trying to place him in the “Lost” timeline, then realized he’s just a popular character actor.)

jeff kober was on china beach. i was a big china beach fan and he was awesome and scary on that show.

but he's been on a zillion t.v. shows. usually playing the scary bad guy.

Well, that assumes that Smokey/Locke can be in multiple places at once, since we saw him on the other side of the island at the time... I don't think they're going to complicate it that much, so I'm just going with "this is Jacob's plan" for now.

Kinda shocked and appalled how badly written/scripted this season is so far. I mean asking Sun if she spoke English ("Oh yeah, thanks! It's a good thing you reminded me that I understand what is going on so that I can speak up and save my husband") and Kate asking random hospital doctor to just come in and help with random patient, and Lennon. Ugh.

Also, fast-sidewayses or whatever = whole big giant can of worms that they cannot possibly tie up neatly in 16 or so episodes. They're like ten year olds at a buffet that get huge scoops of everything that looks remotely appetizing.

I don't know if you can apply traditional metrics of good writing to a show like Lost. It's not the Wire or Deadwood! (Still praying for more Wire/Deadwood stars to appear)

Maybe my tastes have just matured tremendously between when I started watching (when I was 18) and now (at age 22 after taking 4 years of film studies courses), but the hyper-theatric acting (Does Saywer ever NOT squint??) and eighteen deus ex machinas each episode are just "guhhh"

they are only 'deus ex machinas' because you haven't gotten the answer yet...

Character fighting opponent to the near death; opponent gets shot at the very last minute by unseen gunman.

Good thing they only do this once or twice an episode otherwise it might start getting a bit tedious.

Saddingly, Lost did not mature along with my tastes...

I tend to drift off during the action scenes, only perking up if someone important actually dies.

My favorite part of the premiere is the end when the two Other goons are fighting with Jack. Sayid starts to move & Hurley yells "Jack!" and both of the Others immediately spin around with looks of astonishment.

i think there's going to be a richard-centric episode halfway thru the season. seeing as they're not really doing flashbacks anymore i guess it might be based around him on the island sans crash in 2004 but might get backstory that way somehow. with no crash he never meets Locke in the 50s or Jack and Sayid in the 70s.

Think we might get flashbacks for characters who haven't had one before - Richard and Ilana probably.

Dudes complaining about Deus Ex Machinas in Lost, how exactly did you think they were going to explain a giant cloud of smoke that shows people ghosts of their dead relatives and then kills people?

i have to say im with stevie, "lol its sci fi what did u expect" aside, i rewatched season 1 a few weeks ago and the writing/plot development/character motivation was wayyy better than the 3 episodes weve seen so far. i have faith itll get better as they start focusing on the more interesting characters and plot points but these 3 eps have been pretty... lame

i watched the pilot again too and it's just so different..tonally. i wouldn't say necessarily better but they really went all out for it. the advantage it has is that we don't yet know how STUPID certain characters are :)

I thought the mechanic guy was gonna be Tom Friendly, lol.

So I feel like maybe they're using this "infection" or "having been claimed" as the set-up in turning the Others into protagonists. Like, they're just defending the people they know to be "uninfected". Seems like they've been steering towards this for some time, but I'd have to go back and rewatch to say exactly what details have led me to that conclusion.

Also, I don't think my tastes have changed significantly since I started watching Lost, thankfully. I read mainstream comics, so I've always enjoyed the show on that level. I've never expected it to work on the level of the more mature art/entertainment that I enjoy. It does what it does and it does it well.

somebody remind me, what does sawyer know about where locke's been? locke went down the well and sawyer was left holding the rope. after that has anyone filled him in?

Sawyer knows that Locke is dead, and likely knows that Locke's corpse was on the Ajira flight, but that's it, I think.

i mean, i guess he and jack could have talked about it off-camera, but going on what we've actually seen on the show, i don't think he knows

based on how the characters on this show interact, there is no way anybody would have mentioned an important fact like that to sawyer

i love when this show makes Locke seem like a dumbass personally, will be kind of disappointed if this all ends with him being somehow vindicated

yeah it is sort of funny watching him try and try and fall flat on his face all the time, in a sort of cruel way.

Sawyer has pretty consistently had a shitter time than anyone on the Island, except maybe Sayid. Although he had that happy three years with Juliet which admittedly is way, way longer than all the action we've actually seen on screen.

Sawyer was a stone pimp all cool and in control with occasional moments of being tortured or w/e during the first couple seasons

up until being put in a cage (where he got LAID) most of the trouble he got into on the island was his own doing and sometimes he even seemed to welcome it

ben has had a pretty bad time, even if he is an evil asshole. abusive dad, daughter shot dead in front of him, beaten to a pulp numerous times, deposed as leader of the others etc

also had to toss hundreds of bodies into a mass grave after going to the trouble of gassing them

The infection thing is bugging me a lot because presumably the unclear water caused it (otherwise why would Lennon mention it?) but they carried on regardless. And if their intention was to save Sayid as instructed by Jacob via Hurley, why were they surprised when he did come back to life? And why would they then ignore Jacob's wishes and try and kill him again (like 'oh he's infected and Jacob definitely wouldn't want that'). Argh.

I don't think the water caused it, I think they didn't know why the water was unclear but surely it was cos Jacob is dead? And hence saving him didn't work.

Are they setting up possession after death by MIB as 'the infection'? Maybe the panic on the part of the Others stems from the fact that Sayid is one of the people selected by Jacob, and if he's infected/possessed/undead he'll screw up Jacob's plan in some way?

Wondering if had they known that Jacob was dead, they wouldn't have attempted to drown/heal Sayid as well

Has Jacob exhibited smokey-powers ever? He seemed to get killed just like a regular dude. Or was that a special knife?
