kind of a stupid episode, but still fun. loved the return of mac/aldo.
kate episodes are ALWAYS the worst. aren't they trying to mirror season 1 with this season? season 1 ep 3 was a stupid annoying kate episode, season 1 ep 4 was a mind-blowing heart-breaking locke episode...so maybe...

― Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 20:59 (sixteen years ago)
scariest ethan role was in that show that started right when lost started about government team that had to fight aliens in our midst. jeez, he was truly frightening on that.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 20:59 (sixteen years ago)
xp guaranteed next episode will be crazy.. they know how to balance these episodes pretty well & usually stick a boring episode (kate) between two exciting ones (season premiere, and whatever comes next week IMO)
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 21:04 (sixteen years ago)
true...it's going to be mostly locke/richard etc so you assume more exciting.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 21:05 (sixteen years ago)
richard, to me, is the most interesting person on the show. hope he gets his own episode. but probably not.

claire shoulda had the baby--would have been an american citizen

Just read on 4815162342 that Lindsey Baskum is an anagram for Used By Malkin - awwwww, good old Lost..

I think the entire reset/H-Bomb deal was to make sure that Aaron would be born on American soil so he could grow up to be President.

Aaron is no American. His passport is a fake.

i don't really have a problem w/ the premiere, i think it set some interesting things in motion, but would you really call it an 'exciting' episode?
― some dude, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 21:36 (sixteen years ago)
well it got 600+ posts of discussion on here, and we got the OMGWTFPOLARBEARness of the "alternate timeline".. MIB/Flocke reveal.. Losties all managing to make it to 2007.. so yeah.
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 21:39 (sixteen years ago)
I find every premiere exciting. Firstly you get two hours, secondly you get two hours AFTER ALMOST A YEAR AWAY! so maybe that enhances the 'exciting' aspect.. but I think the producers know this too.
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 21:40 (sixteen years ago)
i guess...i think the premiere would have gotten that many posts regardless of content, MIB/Flocke was pretty much revealed last year, and that the alternate timeline stuff wasn't a huge shock...again, interesting stuff, but not much of a hairs-on-neck-standing-up episode by Lost standards, or even by their season premiere standards. more of a chin-scratching hmmm where are they going with this feeling imo. (xpost)
― some dude, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 21:42 (sixteen years ago)
i guess the Smokey battle was an exciting moment though.
― some dude, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 21:43 (sixteen years ago)
well to me, exciting*=generates discussion and the alternate timeline stuff did a whole lot of that! I guess the Flocke stuff was essentially revealed at the end of last season but we all know one Lost nothing is ever official until they specifically spell it out (I'm sorry you had to see me like that/Nice to see you out of chains/etc). Do you find there are a lot of episodes that are that exciting? I feel there are only a few a season that make me actually sit forward and bulge my eyes.. the Constant being the one that comes to mind immediately..
*when talking about TV shows at least

This really felt like one of those ponderous captivity episodes at the start of season three. I enjoyed Miles's zing on Hurley though.
The Sayid and Claire on-island stuff is the only thing from this episode really worth discussing. I think the Others were testing Sayid to try and work out whether it was actually possible to kill him (probable answer = no). But I assume at some point soon Sayid will be able to go hang out with Christian Shepherd in the cabin.
Other question - do we think Christian's been dunked in the temple pool as well, seeing as they never found his body?
Not sure whether Sayid can be possessed/contaminated by Smokey, given Hurley did pretty much exactly what Jacob told him to. Unless it wasn't actually Jacob.

Where did Sawyer get a wedding ring? Did it he order it via the submarine?
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 22:18 (sixteen years ago)
x-post no the thing there is, imo, the pool was turned green when they got to it, probably because jacob was dead? so that's why the cure on sayid didn't work. or even if that's not why, the cure on sayid didn't work as planned.
― I see what this is (Local Garda), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 22:19 (sixteen years ago)
Am I the only one who doesn't really give a shit about Claire, evil or otherwise? Maybe because I am a macho baby-hating man or something
― mh, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 22:40 (sixteen years ago)
You are definitely not the only one.
― Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Wednesday, 10 February 2010 22:40 (sixteen years ago)
nah I don't care about her either. "Because it happened to .... your sister!" and the final shot of Claire was a weak reveal.
― dmr, Wednesday, 10 February 2010 23:42 (sixteen years ago)
She drives to a random body shop and has the vaguely criminal-looking mechanic pop her cuffs. (The guy was played by Jeff Kober, known to some [well, me] as the evil magic-peddling demon Rack in the sixth season of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” What a random, recognizable face for such a bit part. I kept trying to place him in the “Lost” timeline, then realized he’s just a popular character actor.)
― Nhex, Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:03 (sixteen years ago)
jeff kober was on china beach. i was a big china beach fan and he was awesome and scary on that show.
― scott seward, Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:15 (sixteen years ago)
but he's been on a zillion t.v. shows. usually playing the scary bad guy.

i think he played haley joel osments dad on walker texas ranger episode
― sonderangerbot, Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:27 (sixteen years ago)
Unless it wasn't actually Jacob.
I didn't think of this!
― sleeve, Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:45 (sixteen years ago)
Well, that assumes that Smokey/Locke can be in multiple places at once, since we saw him on the other side of the island at the time... I don't think they're going to complicate it that much, so I'm just going with "this is Jacob's plan" for now.
― Nhex, Thursday, 11 February 2010 00:54 (sixteen years ago)
Kinda shocked and appalled how badly written/scripted this season is so far. I mean asking Sun if she spoke English ("Oh yeah, thanks! It's a good thing you reminded me that I understand what is going on so that I can speak up and save my husband") and Kate asking random hospital doctor to just come in and help with random patient, and Lennon. Ugh.
― 26 Mixes Focaccia (Stevie D), Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:05 (sixteen years ago)
Also, fast-sidewayses or whatever = whole big giant can of worms that they cannot possibly tie up neatly in 16 or so episodes. They're like ten year olds at a buffet that get huge scoops of everything that looks remotely appetizing.
― 26 Mixes Focaccia (Stevie D), Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:06 (sixteen years ago)
I don't know if you can apply traditional metrics of good writing to a show like Lost. It's not the Wire or Deadwood! (Still praying for more Wire/Deadwood stars to appear)

Maybe my tastes have just matured tremendously between when I started watching (when I was 18) and now (at age 22 after taking 4 years of film studies courses), but the hyper-theatric acting (Does Saywer ever NOT squint??) and eighteen deus ex machinas each episode are just "guhhh"
― 26 Mixes Focaccia (Stevie D), Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:16 (sixteen years ago)
they are only 'deus ex machinas' because you haven't gotten the answer yet...
― mikebee (BATTAGS), Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:19 (sixteen years ago)
Character fighting opponent to the near death; opponent gets shot at the very last minute by unseen gunman.
Good thing they only do this once or twice an episode otherwise it might start getting a bit tedious.
― Not the real Village People, Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:21 (sixteen years ago)
x-postSaddingly, Lost did not mature along with my tastes...
― President Keyes, Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:23 (sixteen years ago)
I tend to drift off during the action scenes, only perking up if someone important actually dies.
― President Keyes, Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:25 (sixteen years ago)
xpost - examples of these two-or-three-per-episode DEMs please?
― mikebee (BATTAGS), Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:29 (sixteen years ago)
My favorite part of the premiere is the end when the two Other goons are fighting with Jack. Sayid starts to move & Hurley yells "Jack!" and both of the Others immediately spin around with looks of astonishment.
― President Keyes, Thursday, 11 February 2010 01:37 (sixteen years ago)
i think there's going to be a richard-centric episode halfway thru the season. seeing as they're not really doing flashbacks anymore i guess it might be based around him on the island sans crash in 2004 but might get backstory that way somehow. with no crash he never meets Locke in the 50s or Jack and Sayid in the 70s.
― mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:33 (sixteen years ago)
Think we might get flashbacks for characters who haven't had one before - Richard and Ilana probably.
Dudes complaining about Deus Ex Machinas in Lost, how exactly did you think they were going to explain a giant cloud of smoke that shows people ghosts of their dead relatives and then kills people?
― Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:35 (sixteen years ago)
Or the two timelines converge in some way and so they do show his backstory.
― James Mitchell, Thursday, 11 February 2010 11:39 (sixteen years ago)
it might be based around him on the island sans crash in 2004
He would have to be deep sea diving, right?
― President Keyes, Thursday, 11 February 2010 13:34 (sixteen years ago)
i have to say im with stevie, "lol its sci fi what did u expect" aside, i rewatched season 1 a few weeks ago and the writing/plot development/character motivation was wayyy better than the 3 episodes weve seen so far. i have faith itll get better as they start focusing on the more interesting characters and plot points but these 3 eps have been pretty... lame
― max, Thursday, 11 February 2010 13:37 (sixteen years ago)
i watched the pilot again too and it's just so different..tonally. i wouldn't say necessarily better but they really went all out for it. the advantage it has is that we don't yet know how STUPID certain characters are :)
― mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 11 February 2010 13:46 (sixteen years ago)
I thought the mechanic guy was gonna be Tom Friendly, lol.
OTM
was hoping that with 16 episodes of a final season left they'd avoid something this aimless.
dude i'd so much rather see a jin and sun reunion than more of kate doing idiotic things.
So I feel like maybe they're using this "infection" or "having been claimed" as the set-up in turning the Others into protagonists. Like, they're just defending the people they know to be "uninfected". Seems like they've been steering towards this for some time, but I'd have to go back and rewatch to say exactly what details have led me to that conclusion.
Also, I don't think my tastes have changed significantly since I started watching Lost, thankfully. I read mainstream comics, so I've always enjoyed the show on that level. I've never expected it to work on the level of the more mature art/entertainment that I enjoy. It does what it does and it does it well.

somebody remind me, what does sawyer know about where locke's been? locke went down the well and sawyer was left holding the rope. after that has anyone filled him in?
― nsuomy (ramon cora), Thursday, 11 February 2010 19:59 (sixteen years ago)
Sawyer knows that Locke is dead, and likely knows that Locke's corpse was on the Ajira flight, but that's it, I think.
