I think the confusion is enhanced by the fact that lennon wasn't even 100% sure of what he'd told sayid.

Sayid and Claire have been infected by a "darkness" that radically alters their personality, in the same way Rousseau's team had been.

Maybe there's more than one smokey. like the one that polluted the healing water could be a different smokey than locke-smokey.

I just assumed Smokey could break into many little pieces and be as many people/puffs of smoke as he wanted.. I think we have seen the smoke in several pieces..

It seems weird that locke-smokey would need to possess people when he can just mimic them outright. This disease-smokey could be some kind of smokey baby that hasn't learned to do that yet perhaps?

I don't think the disease and smokey are the same thing.

yeah we saw Claire in league with Christian who claims to represent Jacob so is the sickness actually Jacob's doing and nothing to do with Smokey? would be interesting to find out why Smokey couldn't apparently find his loophole by possessing Christian's body but could with Locke's.

Something about the poison pill doesn't add up either. Why not chop his head off if they want him dead?

Think the "poison" must be poison to Jack but not necessarily to Sayid. Nothing anyone says in this show is unambiguous.

Smokey seems to only be able to mimic people who are actually dead, right? Yemi, Christian, Alex & Locke.

Christian only claims to represent Jacob, in my opinion. I think Christian is the same spirit that embodies Locke and embodied Alex, Eko's brother, etc.

Claire-sseau last night did not seem anything like Claire when she was chillin' with Christian, tho.

Yeah, but Claire seems to have been taken to the temple, like the French guys and Ben and Sayid.

But yet the result for her was to basically become Rousseau, who was not to my knowledge infected at all.

Or she's giving herself a plausible cover story (I've been a jungle survivalist for the past few years) so she can get the 815ers to bring her back to the Temple (where she'll leave a gate unlocked for Smokey.)

I think the poison was poison, but if you're infected/affected/changed then you can heal yourself from poisons and injuries you know about. If he willingly took the pill from Jack, then it'd actually work.

yeah probably but considering the bidding was move the island and bring the O6 back, seems more like what Jacob wanted.

But the O6 coming back was the only way to get Locke in a coffin or whatevs.

I don't think the O6 were really going to do shit until Faraday showed up with the bomb plan. Jacob probably touched him in Ann Arbor & gave him the idea.

at this point i'll be pleasantly surprised if they explain satisfactorily why smokey had to use locke's body and if so why he couldn't just kill it and use it all on-island. hopefully there's a connection to when locke first encountered smokey and it would actually be cool to see a new extension/reveal of that scene from Walkabout and what actually happened when Locke "looked into the eye of the island and what i saw was beautiful" or whatever.

anyone want take bets that smokey/MIB revealed to be an OK dude really, and it's Jacob that's kind of a jerk?

Here's my theory: for some reason (rules of his imprisonment?) Smokey can only inhabit a person if they come to the Island as a corpse. When Ben saw Smokey as Alex, it was only a brainscan mirage, not an actual manifestation.

We know of 3 plane crashes--815, Ajira, & Heroin plane. Each had a dead body on board, and Smokey has appeared as all three. I can't say for sure that Eko's vision of Yemi was like Ben's of Alex or if Smokey actually took Yemi's form. Remember that Eko was supposed to play a bigger role in the mythology before the actor took a powder. Yemi may have had a projected greater role as well.

this season is kind of sucking so far

The smoke can do physical stuff.

Maybe I'm not explaining well-- Smokey was there with Ben, but it was not taking the actual physical form of Alex--not in the way it is with Locke: appearing to people who know fuck all about Locke etc.

so if the others are so scared of smokey

a) why is ben able to control it by flushing the smoketoilet [someone asked this earlier i think]
b) why does ben actively go to smokey to be judged

I think the pill was poison, surely the reason they didn't smack Sayid over the head, or whatever, is that he can't be killed that way due to whatever the sickness is, they had him tied down so I think if it was just a matter of stabbing him they'd have done that. and clearly he's not going to take a pill if this randomer he doesn't know just doles it out to him.

so many stupid plot points tho as mentioned above.

as regards the relationship between smokey and the sickness etc, is it possible smokey can control some people but only inhabit one? so claire or eventually sayid would have their own memories etc but be sort of part of his team...like jack/hurley etc being jacobites....

If they cut off his head, he would have grown a new body and his body would have grown a new head?

Did anyone else notice when they shocked him with electricity, his wound reopened? It reversed some of the healing they'd done. I figured the hot poker was to cauterize it as much as anything.

i sort of am a bit pissed off with the show even as i lap it up. i guess it's always been this way. but sometimes you just think why the fuck does EVERY SINGLE PERSON have to be reticent and EVERY SINGLE ANSWER have to be delayed etc etc etc etc...I mean it's the final season. this episode had so much bullshit off island kate stuff and oh look no fake locke despite everyone wanting to know about that storyline. if they can't fill a final season with the actual island mythology then wtf is wrong with them?
