From all of their accounts, though, Ned, Gladstone really did just try to make them reform.

G. Boccaccio to thread!

"I see now the truth of what the good folk in Capsa told me, that serving God is a delight; for I never remember doing anything that gave me as much joy and pleasure as this putting the Devil in Hell. So I think the people who spend their time otherwise than in serving God must be very foolish."

Voice mails indicate serial drug-buying and thowing-away?
"Hi Mike, this is Art. Hey, I was just calling to see if we could get any more. Either $100 or $200 supply,"

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Friday, 3 November 2006 23:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, Ed Schultz was having big fun with this today on his show, with even a local law-enforcement-type called in and said, in effect, "$200 is not for first-time use; $200 is a party."

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Friday, 3 November 2006 23:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Shultz also oddly hip enough to play Mike Jones "Cuttin'" before the commericals today.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, some of his board-op/producer guys are with it. Even played a coupla Appleseed Cast songs a while back.

(1) what happened when Dawkins talked to Pastor Ted

(2) vid of the event

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Saturday, 4 November 2006 00:49 (seventeen years ago) link

that is some pretty terrifying footage.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Saturday, 4 November 2006 17:28 (seventeen years ago) link

New Lifers, Pastor Ted writes with evident pride, “like the benefits, risks, and maybe above all, the excitement of a free-market society.” They like the stimulation of a new brand. “Have you ever switched your toothpaste brand, just for the fun of it?” Pastor Ted asks. Admit it, he insists. All the way home, you felt a “secret little thrill,” as excited questions ran through your mind: “Will it make my teeth whiter? My breath fresher?” This is the sensation Ted wants pastors to bring to the Christian experience.

and what (ooo), Saturday, 4 November 2006 18:43 (seventeen years ago) link

If you replace toothpaste brand with "drug dealer," whiter with "more rotten," and fresher with "more stale," this makes a lot more sense.

matlewis (matlewis), Saturday, 4 November 2006 18:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I just found out that Borat isn't playing anywhere in Hawaii, but Jesus Camp is. So it looks like Pastor Ted and I have a date tonite.

More here:

A letter of explanation and apology by Haggard as well as a word of encouragement from his wife will be read during services at New Life Church Sunday morning, the statement said.

"Our sermon today will be a little different..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 4 November 2006 22:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Mike Jones is Grade-A man meat for a 59 year old hooker.

Now I have a deadline.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 4 November 2006 23:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Sorry to speed up that deadline, but I was corrected after making that statement. He's 49.

"Now I'm in charge...heheh."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 November 2006 01:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, a little disengenuous here, Mr. Jones:

Jones first learned of Haggard's firing in a telephone interview with The Denver Post.

"I hadn't heard," he said. "I'm sad. I didn't want to ruin his life or his family's life."

"I just said all that stuff because we were bros!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 November 2006 01:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Eh I think it possible to be sad about the events and to not WANT to ruin the Haggard's/family's life while still feeling like you need to or should expose his hypocrisy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 5 November 2006 01:32 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah. i mean, i definitely feel bad for haggard. his life is ruined. that always sucks.

gbx (skowly), Sunday, 5 November 2006 01:35 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean I am sad that the part our the culture which Haggard is such an active part of so ridiculously repressive that it feels justified that his "dirty" laundry is being aired in public. I mean I don't really want to give a shit about what this guy does in private and I don't think what he was/is doing SHOULD fuck up his life, but well he pretty much was asking for it ya know.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 5 November 2006 01:40 (seventeen years ago) link

seriously though, what's next for him?

homosexuals anonymous?

or does he do some serious soul searching, embrace his sexuality, and start a new movement within the church, changing the face of religion in america?

naaaaahhhh....

researching ur life (grady), Sunday, 5 November 2006 01:42 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost to alex: were the guy not so closely associated with the legislation of our nation's laws regarding gay rights i'd agree with you.

"or does he do some serious soul searching, embrace his sexuality, and start a new movement within the church, changing the face of religion in america?"

Haha dream on. I mean he might be one of those ex-ex-gays at some point, but those guys aren't changing the face of anything.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 5 November 2006 01:45 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost no no we DO agree. I mean I feel like it had to happen too, but it still doesn't make me feel good about it you know.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 5 November 2006 01:45 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, i'm with Alex.

gbx (skowly), Sunday, 5 November 2006 01:50 (seventeen years ago) link

My question then is -- is there a way that this could have been brought up and addressed *without* making it a big public affair that drags his family etc. into it? And did Jones perhaps pursue that? For all we know he did.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 5 November 2006 01:50 (seventeen years ago) link

He has suggested several times that he could have used blackmail. If he's to be believed, he has no financial intrest.

All he wanted to do was create his very own November suprise.

researching ur life (grady), Sunday, 5 November 2006 01:59 (seventeen years ago) link

My question then is -- is there a way that this could have been brought up and addressed *without* making it a big public affair that drags his family etc. into it?

I don't see how that's even an issue. This guy has made a profession out of (in part) demonising homosexuality, so he is a huge hypocrite. It is he who has dragged his family and church into the issue through his own hypocrisy. Jones has no responsibility to protect him from himself.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 5 November 2006 02:01 (seventeen years ago) link

It is he who has dragged his family and church into the issue through his own hypocrisy.

and also the movement he represents and of which he has been a high-profile standard-bearer has been dragging the whole country through a nasty fight over civil rights in which they are -- by my judgment, and probably history's -- entirely and viciously in the wrong. he's a public figure whose power is partly based on encouraging bigotry and intolerance, so while i can have sympathy for him as an obviously deeply confused man, i can't feel bad about his loss of stature and authority. he was actively using it for bad ends.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 5 November 2006 02:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Ugh after seeing the way he spoke to Dawkins in that clip (and Dawkins looked like he wanted to punch the snot out of him), I have no sympathy and I regret even thinking this was a setup.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 5 November 2006 02:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I think b/c he's been such a vocal opponent against gay marriage it had to be made into a public spectacle. someone who wants to dictate morality in others' private lives deserves no privacy himself.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Sunday, 5 November 2006 02:47 (seventeen years ago) link

pastors apparently lead lives of great temptation.

plus, apparently, their wives are schlubs.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 5 November 2006 03:06 (seventeen years ago) link

> Dawkins looked like he wanted to punch the snot out of him

I thought exactly the reverse - that it appeared Haggard was barely restraining himself from violence. Dawkins was upset that his position was being misrepresented, but Ted had a look in his eye and tremble in his face that I associate with "get ready to rumble."

It's the lazy and immoral way to become super hip. (Austin, Still), Sunday, 5 November 2006 03:18 (seventeen years ago) link

when systematic personality cults meet deep homophobia, and a general fear of pleasure, the gay just exudes.

pinkmoose (jacklove), Sunday, 5 November 2006 04:13 (seventeen years ago) link

and mel white has a new book out, where he did exactly that--he started out writing for both falwell and robertson, decided he liked the cock, quit, joined the queer MCC, and started the radically inclusive, xian group SoulForce, which is committed to non violent, direct action. they had a caravan last year, and took picnics and gay families to homophobic xian instutionas all over the states, including dobson and haggards church

i would love if haggard took his NEA connections and worked for soul force, but i doubt its going to happen

pinkmoose (jacklove), Sunday, 5 November 2006 04:17 (seventeen years ago) link

and about the art--its a varration of muscla xianity, you can see similar images from boy scouts in the 1890s, the YMCA in the 1920s, to mainstream protesants in the 1950s, (esp in the LDS commissioning pulp artist Arnold Freiberg), to people like Athletes in Action, etc

pinkmoose (jacklove), Sunday, 5 November 2006 04:20 (seventeen years ago) link
