done w/season 4 and making headway into season 5. weird how the synopses i read of s4 made basically zero sense but watching it i was like 'yeah ok i get it'. esp funny moment in s5 was hurley explaining to his dad what REALLY happened while he was missing. at least the producers know that the show is just OTT
...which seems like the show's main strength? like it just assaults you with ridiculous nonsense but yr willing to roll with it cuz, you know, it's fun

why would you read synopses before you watched it?!
― wall•egina (s1ocki), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:14 (sixteen years ago)
just seriously smh-ing at your lost style
kate pretty much is the embodiment of 'unhealthy attraction' at least for someone like me. i've spent most of lost wanting to like her as a character, if only to justify the fact that i think she's really attractive. which i'm guessing is a deliberate move on the producers' parts? she's cute, she's funny and charming sometimes, handy with a gun, good at tracking (?), etc., but really she's just a big fat dickhead
― werewolf bar mitzvah of the xx (gbx), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:14 (sixteen years ago)
i don't really "like" any characters on lost so not feeling the kate-hate.
― pro bono publico (history mayne), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:15 (sixteen years ago)
slocki: because i wasn't sure if i was gonna watch s4/5 or just read as much as i could and watch s6 real time.
right now i'm doing it desmond style. i've seen part 1 of LAX, i've skimmed this thread, and i'm heading into s5.
if anything my lost style is even more ~hxc~ than anyone else's
― werewolf bar mitzvah of the xx (gbx), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:15 (sixteen years ago)
^^ pretty much OTM, although the thing that makes that fall down is that post-island Kate actually grew and matured into a sensible, respectable person who was wasn't like a turbocharged wrong-decision-making machine ping-ponging between penises
― PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:16 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i guess that's true. which, of course, made me like her again.
― werewolf bar mitzvah of the xx (gbx), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:19 (sixteen years ago)
she's just quite boring. she brings fewer lols than any other character along with Sun. but Sun is more likeable by default, just by getting less coverage.
― mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:21 (sixteen years ago)
haha i fucking hated off island kate
― SMALL BONES, SMALL BODIES (jjjusten), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:22 (sixteen years ago)
shes the most boring character by a long shot--of all the characters she has the least to do w/ the island mythology (both on and off the island) & episodes with her do nothing to answer the shows big questions
― max, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:22 (sixteen years ago)
tbh "bringing lols" is not the most important criterion for a good character in my book
― PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:22 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i was going to say, if you look back at which character has been the most complete waste of time wrt any progression in the story, its kate. xpost
― SMALL BONES, SMALL BODIES (jjjusten), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:24 (sixteen years ago)
maybe not but everyone else manages to have some fun
also i usually cheer on fugitives making desperate escapes but now i just want to see kate behind bars. alongside other women i suppose that's how it would work (haven't really thought about it).
― mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:24 (sixteen years ago)
also, the subplots/relationships that kate is a part of are the WORST parts of the show--i.e. love triangle, whose baby is it, etc
― max, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:25 (sixteen years ago)
plus "being hot" is hardly a better criterion for good character!
― mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:27 (sixteen years ago)
Also Kate clearly fits into the Island's schemes as one of the primary motivators of action between Jack and Sawyer; half of the shit they decided to do wouldn't have occurred without the element of posturing for her approval (Locke too, to a lesser degree; that obv. wasn't going to happen but he still did just as much posturing with/against Jack for her benefit as anyone else).
I mean, you might as well ask "Why was Charlie on the Island?" or "Why was Jin on the Island?" if direct impact upon the Island itself is primary to why they are interesting characters. I think the Island is a big part of the story but it's not the only part, and I think everyone in the cast has done a good job of creating a character who fits into the wider story; I don't think the show would have worked at all without any of the original characters, and the characters they've added have supported that foundation nicely (sole exceptions being Nikki and Paolo, and even they ended up redeeming themselves character- and story-wise by getting buried alive).

I think the Island is a big part of the story but it's not the only part
youre right--it is the only good part
― max, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:30 (sixteen years ago)
also i would be happy if jack, kate and sawyer all died after the second season
sawyer? really?
― mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:31 (sixteen years ago)
fuck yes.
― pro bono publico (history mayne), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:32 (sixteen years ago)
sawyer/juliet pairing is possible series nadir
no because they were a much more likeable (yet unlikely) couple than Jack and Kate. and La Fleur is actually a good episode.
― mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:35 (sixteen years ago)
wow, ppl really hate happiness in their dramatic action
― PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:35 (sixteen years ago)
i am sort of exaggerating here, its not like i dont see what sawyer/jack/kate/juliet bring to the table--but the series insistence on treating them like main characters at the expense of the interesting/funny/mysterious characters--is its weakest link by a long shot
― max, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:36 (sixteen years ago)
sorry what happiness have those four ever brought to the series? its just melodrama melodrama melodrama with them
― max, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:37 (sixteen years ago)
hating on Sawyer/Juliet = flirting with SB imo

HA GUYS REMEMBER TACO NIGHT W KATE
― sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:38 (sixteen years ago)
i think my biggest prob with kate is the fact that her sole purpose as a character has been fuck up and derail progression in the plot. and yeah, that happens A LOT in this show, but i really think she has been the primary drag things out tool for the writers.
― SMALL BONES, SMALL BODIES (jjjusten), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:38 (sixteen years ago)
xposts but once you put those interesting/funny/mysterious characters more into the spotlight they surely lose those attributes. catch 22.
― mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:39 (sixteen years ago)
Sawyer's transformation into a successful leader and his stable, happy relationship with Juliet is what I was thinking about there. Kate and Jack, especially together, exist only to create melodrama in others; that's sort of their function in the story.
― PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! PIES! (HI DERE), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:39 (sixteen years ago)
sawyer also brings great nicknames
― wall•egina (s1ocki), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:40 (sixteen years ago)
lol "progression in the plot."
I remember Taco night. LOST needs more Nathan Fillion.

how? why? funny is still funny 10 episodes later. and if you cant maintain an interesting character over 4 22-episode seasons... well maybe you shouldnt be writing for TV?
― max, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:40 (sixteen years ago)
sawyer and juliet are the most defensible of the poor four but only because sawyers lolsy nicknames and that season where juliet was mysterious and untrustworthy
― max, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:41 (sixteen years ago)
so you're saying maybe the lost guys shouldn't be writing for tv...?
― wall•egina (s1ocki), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:42 (sixteen years ago)
dude u can't b funny all the time. sometimes ur just a fat dude who sees dead people.
― all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:42 (sixteen years ago)
haha yeah, kind of xp
― max, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:42 (sixteen years ago)
Sawyer/Juliet rules imo - and any melodrama with them is entirely kate's fault.
― Roz, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:42 (sixteen years ago)
i mean the real problem is that its 22-episode seasons instead of 12-episode seasons
― max, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:43 (sixteen years ago)
max i'd love to see you write good TV instead of CD artwork or whatever it is you do
― mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:43 (sixteen years ago)
zinging is my art
Sawyer and Juliet get a pass for me if only because "LaFleur" was one of the show's best episodes.

i'm serious btw
― mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:44 (sixteen years ago)
I like Jack's dramatic arc. He started out with all of the hallmarks of the archetypal capable leader and has had pretty much every vestige of that beaten out of him by his experiences both at home and on the Island until he's basically a wild-eyed maniac operating purely on whim and instinct. (also Jack sobbing is always reliably awesome entertainment)
Kate's story is the exact opposite of Jack's; I'm very interested in seeing if she remembers how put together she was post-Island now that she's firmly back in the mix.

i would love someone to give me a couple million bucks to make a good sci fi show but not even nbc is that dumb
― max, Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:48 (sixteen years ago)
Kate annoys me because she always wants to go along when other people are going somewhere, even when it would make more sense for her to stay put, and because she never tells people important pieces of information about herself or things she's discovered even when it would be logical and right and plot-forwarding to do so because she has so many freaking issues. But she will never, ever be as irritating as Jack, so I ain't mad at her.
― she is writing about love (Jenny), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:49 (sixteen years ago)
big ideas max
― sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:49 (sixteen years ago)
And if it weren't for Jack being such a weeping yutz all the time, the show would only be two seasons long, and I really enjoyed 4/5 of the previous seasons, so I guess I'm not too mad at him, either.
― she is writing about love (Jenny), Tuesday, 9 February 2010 17:50 (sixteen years ago)
I think if Kate started taking control, as she was originally supposed to before the writers backed off from their idea of killing Jack in the first 15 minutes, people would be a lot more positive about her.
also, lest we all forget: wau (linked because hueg)
