One day my profile is up and the nickalicious already has a response! Wowwee zowwee!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 21 February 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

"Dirty dronerock girl seeks Fr33 Ja22 Boi to make beautiful music together?"

kate I live in NYC.

hstencil, Friday, 21 February 2003 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, phil-two has one of my favorite movie-scenes EVAH as his favorite-sex-scene-from-a-movie!

*actually still a little stunned to find someone else who's seen Tampopo...what a great flick!*

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 21 February 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

why does everyone on this site say that the last great book they read is fucking david sedaris?!

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and the spelling! egads!

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

David Sedaris must be getting some hellacious paper cuts right about now.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, I've never even heard of David Sedaris!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan your joke was lost on me, please explain.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"why does everyone on this site say that the last great book they read is fucking david sedaris?! "

"David Sedaris must be getting some hellacious paper cuts right about now. "

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I totally want to make a fake one and post all the results on here.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, the scariest thing I've noticed is the number of LA women who are reading Ayn Rand...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I posted a fake robot one under the name bleep_bloop. It got no responses.

I'm convinced all the women who list David Sedaris are robots. Nothing against him or his writing, but jeez talk about hive mind! Double for women who list Sedaris and the makeout scene from "Top Gun!"

hstencil, Friday, 21 February 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Thats a great scene.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe so, but does it have to be everybody's favorite?

I think the best sex scene in "Top Gun" involves volleyball.

hstencil, Friday, 21 February 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I totally want to make a fake one and post all the results on here.

I don't recommend this. I made profiles for famous dead people (Marie Curie, Buster Keaton, et al) and wrote an article about the responses (from people who obviously didn't recognize these people, despite my best efforts to make the profiles as ridiculous as possible). I received some really creepy responses and feel kind of bad about the whole thing. *atone, atone*

Ernest P. (ernestp), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I always flex before I serve.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah it would be kind of mean.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

ernest-
please link article.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 21 February 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

You can search for people in London, Kate, in that I did so by putting in London as the city and UK as the country. Except I did have to join first. I think it's one dollar to email someone, except it's actually one token, and you seem to have to buy 25 for $24.95, rather than 1 for a dollar.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, but I am nonetheless balding and short and funny shaped. I see myself as very unattractive, but I do keep reminding myself that I have found quite a few attractive people who clearly thought otherwise.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

why does everyone on this site say that the last great book they read is fucking david sedaris?!

David Sedaris isn't a book!

You're OTM though. Most of these people don't read, and they either steal their "last great book" from other profiles or they've pretty much ONLY read David Sedaris and maybe a self-help book or two.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

please link article.

The article isn't on the web, gygax!, so I'll email you it.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

The best scene in Top Gun involves Iceman's chompers.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

We're talking "Top Gun", not "Top Cum" Daver.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

"we were... inverted"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I always flex before I serve.

Rick Rossovich rules.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 22 February 2003 08:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh I'm talking to a cute Nerve girl now!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 22 February 2003 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

yo I've seen that girl around NYC! fuck yeah Jody, go!

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 22 February 2003 08:30 (twenty-three years ago)

that girl is WAY cool. talk to her lots.

she just read the book that I'm reading and loving.

nellskies (minna), Saturday, 22 February 2003 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Man, she's got the cool pout going on. She should let Jody rock her world. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 February 2003 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think David Sedaris is terrible...but if that's the last *great* book someone has read I feel kinda sorry for them.

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 22 February 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I scared the cute Nerve girl off. :-(

Or worse, maybe I bored her.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

In boredom several months ago I used the Mark's infamous baby v. duck photo in my (hidden) profile.

Today I received an email from Nerve (the return address had the word "violations" in it!) which read in part, "thats a cute little [sic] duckey, and an even cuter baby. Although, we would prefer if you would post a photo of yourself."

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Needless to say they removed the photo.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

(This is the post where Dan pouts because no one else finds the idea of David Sedaris getting fucked by randy paperbacks as funny as he does.)

*pout*

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

That's not fair! How do they know you aren't a duck? Do ducks not deserve love?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"Turn-ons: frightening babies, long walks, anal"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Also needless to say, I replaced it with

http://www.magicalportrait.com/burningman-images/duck.jpg

How long until I'm booted off?

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

you could claim that you are standing betwixed (new word), the duck and the egg, and that is your bicycle. Damn their hegemony!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, so I have had so much joy looking at everyone's profiles that I will share mine, even though it kinda makes me cringe: theobjectlesson.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

you are cute Chris.

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 00:06 (twenty-three years ago)

In carefully selected photos, yes. (Self-deprication aside, thanks.)

I always worry when I see one of these personals where the photo doesn't look cute (even if it's cute in a way that I'm not all that into). It just seems like there are obvious cropping and lighting techniques to make yourself look cute -- and plus you are trying to advertise your cuteness -- so when someone doesn't look at all cute, it is weird.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 00:46 (twenty-three years ago)

(Yeah Chris, you are cute. Go get em.)

Except can I just express an extreme annoyance w/ people who post exceedingly flattering and/or uncharacteristic pictures? I mean, the point of this is to meet other people in actual real life - why advertise falsely?

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

the same reason aspiring actors get headshots that look like the Cosmo version of themselves—1/2 of them think they actually look like that and the other 1/2 just want a foot in the door. the second one's deluded about other people; the first one's deluded about yourself

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 01:17 (twenty-three years ago)

But Tracer the deluded ones are supposed to go to makeoutclub!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 01:19 (twenty-three years ago)

For the same reason McDonald's hamburgers look better on TV than they do when you take the Big Mac wrapper off and rotten iceberg lettuce flies everywhere. You have to reel people in somehow.

I think the pic I put up is pretty flattering, and I'm proud to say I didn't Photoshop it at all except to crop out the non-me parts of the shot. It's also fairly recent. So I'm still playing by "the rules," even if people are disappointed by what they see in person. I can't help that.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not suggesting that people post bad or unflattering pictures necessarily; I'm just suggesting they post photos that actually resemble them.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 01:26 (twenty-three years ago)

You hate duckies!

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 01:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Why a duck?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate dating duckies.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 01:30 (twenty-three years ago)
