You think I'm too old to make monkeyshines at a picture show?

really is my favorite show on TV right now

da croupier, Friday, 12 February 2010 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

It reminds me a little of the relationship between Sam Malone and the rest of the Cheers gang.

This is pretty otm, and the way they've reworked the sam-and-diane act (which grated in the first few episodes) has been great.

da croupier, Friday, 12 February 2010 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

excited to see how season two will go now that they have the form down, though i dunno how they can hope to keep people in community college forever if it hits.

da croupier, Friday, 12 February 2010 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

jeff brings them all to law school where he teaches

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Friday, 12 February 2010 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

the show is just such a pleasure for me, even when it's not funny i'm delighted

sir ilx-a-lot (cutty), Friday, 12 February 2010 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

jeff brings them all to law school where he teaches

Dan Harmon (creator of the show) actually addressed this in a recent interview:

I don’t have any ambition to be the next Laverne & Shirley, and have it run two decades. Jeff’s not going to grow a beard and start teaching there while the rest of them open a pet store across the street.

He also mentions that it's possible to get a bachelor's degree at a community college, so the show basically has a four-year plan laid out. That interview and this one from E!Online are pretty interesting looks at how he's dealing with the expectations from the fandom that's sprouted up.

In July 2009, Harmon was nominated in two Emmy categories for his part in writing the Oscar telecast: Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, the latter of which he was awarded for "Hugh Jackman Opening Number" at the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards.

Of course it could be like MASH and be an 11 year moebius loop of the korean war community college.

I thought tonights was among the best.

dan selzer, Friday, 5 March 2010 04:53 (sixteen years ago)

I laughed at the naked pool bit way more than I want to admit, but also hopeful that due to the Abed plot we'll get a bit less of him just being the self-aware/fourth wall breaking loser of the group

Nhex, Friday, 5 March 2010 05:12 (sixteen years ago)

I've never thought Abed was a loser.

Jouster, Friday, 5 March 2010 06:10 (sixteen years ago)

Really enjoyed this one a bunch.

Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Friday, 5 March 2010 06:11 (sixteen years ago)

yeah this episode was tops, and the way they totally went for broke with that last scene was kind of unexpected and awesome

some dude, Friday, 5 March 2010 06:51 (sixteen years ago)

Loser was not quite the word I was looking for, but I just read this AVClub review that nailed what I wanted to say far more eloquently:

The show's detractors often write it off as a series about a bunch of types who interact with each other in utterly predictable ways. And while that was true of some of the earliest episodes of the series, I don't think it's true anymore. As the series has slowly given every character in its ensemble showcase episodes that show them off, it's found the human beings behind the types. Take a look at how the show treats Abed tonight (in what's probably the best showcase the series has come up with for Danny Pudi). Abed's been the typical TV character who's detached and sort of aloof, an outsider who hangs out with our cast. (Harmon compared him to a wide variety of TV characters, including Mork and the Fonz.) But this episode shows that that's just a level of comfort with himself that the other characters lack, a level of comfort that they envy in some ways. Just like Britta is not an ice-cold bitch but, rather, a girl who's only beginning to realize how little she understands the way she gets in her own way or like Troy is not just a dumb jock but also a guy who's always leading with his heart (but is easily swayed by others), Abed's revealed to be something more than what he appears.

Nhex, Friday, 5 March 2010 07:22 (sixteen years ago)

YOU MAGNIFICENT SON OF A BITCH!

T Bone Streep (Cave17Matt), Friday, 5 March 2010 07:24 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that's a good point about how much they're willing to toy with and put new angles on the characters, even so early on in the show's run. i mean i never would've thought from the pilot episode that Troy would've become such a weird and hilarious character.

some dude, Friday, 5 March 2010 07:42 (sixteen years ago)

i never liked this show, but i'll watch tonight's episode once it's up on hulu tomorrow

HOOM gang (J0rdan S.), Friday, 5 March 2010 08:09 (sixteen years ago)

What is the origin of "you magnificent son of a bitch?" I feel like I've been hearing that phrase forever as a semi-reference.

Jouster, Friday, 5 March 2010 09:25 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, this has replaced 30 Rock as the Show of My Heart. Something about seeing the coach walking around naked with his farmer tan just killed me. I was actually pretty impressed with the guy who played the coach -- it would've been easy to sound hammy and overdone with some of those lines, but he really sold it.

Need .gif of Abed being a vampire.

loled at the Mad Men thing too. <3 Alison Brie.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Friday, 5 March 2010 12:21 (sixteen years ago)

I really like some of the changes they're making with the characters, especially making Brita more vulnerable (see the ballet dancing episode, drunk dialing, her breaking down when everyone makes fun of her in last night's episode) instead of just being the sassy ice queen all the time.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 5 March 2010 13:52 (sixteen years ago)

the episode was great. brita's pronuncation of bagel had us freaking rolling.

carne asada, Friday, 5 March 2010 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

My 2 year old says bagel the way Britta does.

ô_o (Nicole), Friday, 5 March 2010 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

hmmm

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Friday, 5 March 2010 23:58 (sixteen years ago)

My car's GPS says bagel the way Britta does (we have it set on the British accent voice and one day we set the destination as "Ein-steeeen Bross Bag-els")

so torn between being happy for this show and being anxious about the increasing possibility of Joel getting his Kinnear on and leaving The Soup

Even if ABC hadn't just cancelled Better off Ted, that episode would have finally settled it as to which was the best comedy currently on US TV.

in britain its pronounced bygule

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Saturday, 6 March 2010 02:02 (sixteen years ago)

not surprised about Better Off Ted but still bummed to hear :(

some dude, Saturday, 6 March 2010 02:05 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not sure if it has officially been cancelled but most of the actors seem to be working on other things. However, given how bad ABC at scheduling and promoting things it would surprise me if any announcement has slipped completely under the radar.

even though you want them to keep this show tight and not drag on forever in a way i wouldn't mind it because it's got that thing where i have a new favorite character every week, and those shows are very rare

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 6 March 2010 02:50 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, this show is pretty unfuckable with atm
