also, for someone like me: it is impossible to bring medical references to school because they are FUCKING HUGE. and there are times when I'd like to have access to several at the same time

ason Chen:

Apple uses the ePub format, which means it’s open, and which might mean you can import your own ePub books (maybe?).

^^^^^^^^^ SRSLY V INTERESTING

here's yr file creation comin up

stet, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:59 (sixteen years ago)

no one needs to have all of their fiction books around all the time, but man REFERENCES. SO MANY REFERENCES

his power told him (about the fish) (gbx), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:59 (sixteen years ago)

I am just astonished that Apple spent forever on this and its a kindle-sized iphone. NOT A GAME CHANGER.

I think this is worth about $299-$499... but would not be surprised if Apple goes with something like $899... I wouldn't pay that, though.

no gbx, i totally understand college students using something like this, 100%

Big question: can I add my own PDFs and TXTs to iBooks?

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

i don't know if the subteext is that you can upload yr manuscript and self-punblish but that's where my mind went

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

cochin ftw

stet, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

Wonder if that new bluetooth keyboard will pair with this?

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:00 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, the student market will gobble this shit up. most college students don't need to do serious hackery, but do need to have loads of different books going at the same time. so if you can plug a keyboard and a mouse into this thing, it'll be the ultimate student computer (which, tbh, is precisely who it's aimed at imo)

I strongly suspect that there will be a CDBaby/Tunecore type of service catering to self-publishers.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, macbook killer, especially if you can type into Pages with any sort of reasonable speed

stet, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:02 (sixteen years ago)

Only thing more tedious than presentation software are presentations about presentation software

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:02 (sixteen years ago)

ebooks are good for things that are only available in shitty mass-market paperback versions, and if you fly a lot.

smashing aspirant (milo z), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

Nah, not true Milo -- the point about college textbooks is spot on.

Oh, I'm sure, I'm just pointing out two areas where I find my old Kindle useful.

smashing aspirant (milo z), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

iWork Touch interface looks a hundred times better than iWork OS X interface.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

i think milo's point was "ebooks are good for ... among other things" not "ebooks are only good for ..."

caek, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:07 (sixteen years ago)

xxp

caek, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:07 (sixteen years ago)

also, guys, i am getting a little excited about the prospect of this in a hospital/clinical setting. not that we'll see a usable/apple-y EMR anytime in the near future, but holy shit if you could tote this around instead of keeping track of a bazillion different patient charts AND use it to pull up references as needed....

his power told him (about the fish) (gbx), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:07 (sixteen years ago)

eBooks are great -- and I am a college student so I know how useful this has the potential to be... but I just don't see the point of a computer you can draw on that doesn't have stuff like video editing and animation applications.

As your Dentist I recommend smoking: (Viceroy), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:07 (sixteen years ago)

OK like I said on the iPhone app thread, ComicBookLover may just be my killer app for this

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

hate that weird wood effect tho

. but I just don't see the point of a computer you can draw on that doesn't have stuff like video editing and animation applications.
for you, or for everyone? I don't know how many people are makin animations every day, but everybody uses the web

stet, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

As someone who basically reads medical records for a living, I would love to see this (or something like it) widely used in a clinical setting.

My Kindle is one of the first run, inherited from moms. It still works okay.

smashing aspirant (milo z), Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:10 (sixteen years ago)

Can Apple just FINALLY absorb FileMaker/Bento back into the mothership? I'm annoyed at how backwards the default FM/B interfaces are compared with this.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 19:10 (sixteen years ago)

will this run apps simultaneously?
